Foreword

We were delighted to welcome back former School Captain (2015), Niamh Sullivan as the guest speaker for our fifth Business Breakfast held on Wednesday. We were privileged to hear Niamh’s insight as she detailed her journey from her studies at Bond University to working for Channel 7. It was her successful founding and running of her business INFIX Creative Studio which saw her recently named as a Forbes 30 under 30 Semi-finalist. Niamh has made exceptional strides in the business world, assisting numerous brands globally in launching, scaling, and securing capital.

The Business Breakfast event remains an invaluable platform for like-minded professionals to network, exchange ideas, and be inspired by the remarkable achievements of our guest speakers.

Today our annual Parents and Friends Golf Day was held at the Coolangatta Tweed Golf Club. The day offered not only an occasion for some friendly competition but also a wonderful opportunity to bond in the picturesque surrounds of the course. This fun-filled day was very well attended and certainly captured the spirit of the Parents and Friends in providing quality events for our parents whilst undertaking both fundraising and friend-raising. Thank you to our sponsors, in particular major sponsor JGB Interiors.

Looking ahead, our Athletics Carnivals are fast approaching. These events are a vibrant testament to the sporting spirit of Lindisfarne, with the whole school coming together to participate, support, and compete. Whether you are wearing your house colours with pride, cheering on your peers, or relishing in the mateship and healthy competition, there is something for everyone. I, for one, am eager to see who will claim the Athletics points this year. A reminder to all parents and guardians that these are compulsory school days and I look forward to seeing all students in attendance.

You can support the Parents and Friends who are fundraising on the day by assisting with the sausage sizzle, please use the links below to sign up.

Thursday, 22 June - Years 7 to 12 Athletics

Friday, 23 June - Years K to 6 Athletics

Our UK Cricket Tour departs on Thursday, 22 June and our team of dedicated and committed Senior School cricketers and staff will depart for England. This is the first international sports tour the School has undertaken and it is hoped that this inaugural tour will lay the foundation for future international tours across a range of sports. A special thank you to Julie McDowell who is the Tour Manager and has put together an exceptional itinerary of matches and experiences for our players.

Congratulations to the Year 11 Drama students who put on some wonderful performances of The Queen at The Citadel in Murwillumbah on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. We also had a number of students, across a range of year levels, perform at the Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts. The depth of talent of the Performing Arts students at Lindisfarne is of a very high calibre, and I thank them for their hard work and dedication.

Today is an immensely hard and sad day for many members of the Lindisfarne School Community, and in particular for the Copeland family and their many friends. The Copeland family have been an integral part of our school community since 2007, with all four children attending the School.

Words cannot express the sadness we feel for them as they farewelled Steve and celebrated his life today. Please join me to pray for the family if you can, and extend our spiritual support and love to Karen and their four children Olivia, Brandon, Bailey and Brodie and all of their extended family and friends today and always.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18).

May Steve rest in peace and rise in glory, and may the Lord comfort his family and our school community at this time of grief and sadness.

Chaplain's Corner

Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Guardians,

Like millions of others around the world, I have been dabbling in the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly ChatGPT, and have found it quite efficient, interesting and mind-blowing. However, I have my reservations as well. I’m concerned that the negative manipulation of technology in general and AI, in particular, will have grave consequences for the human family.

That is why it’s important to continue to educate our young people in the way of fraternity and solidarity so that these values may permeate technological development and advancement.

In the changing world of work and AI, “education” David De Carvalho said, “needs to focus more on those aspects of our humanity that are exclusively human and vitally important for our development as democratic communities…”

The Bible admonishes us to “be kind and tenderhearted to one another” (Ephesians 4:32).

Virtues such as kindness, compassion and empathy will be needed more than ever as we navigate these interesting times.

This week, I spent some time with Year 2 students exploring the parable of the Good Samaritan during ‘Godly Play’. We learnt that being a ‘good neighbour’ means that we need to stop in the face of need, suffering and pain and do something about them by offering love, care, compassion and kindness.

Our school values encourage us to embody compassion, wisdom and respect in all we do and say. Every day, we see these values exemplified in our community in innumerable ways. Thank you for being ‘human lighthouses’ through your acts of kindness and compassion.

I make mine the words of Maya Angelou: “My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who and how you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness. Continue to allow humour to lighten the burden of your tender heart.”

I wish you a relaxing and restful weekend full of humour, tenderness and kindness.

The Reverend Constantine Osuchukwu
Chaplain

Catch up Immunisations

The NSW Health vaccination nurses will return to Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School in Term 3 on August 23rd. This will provide an opportunity for any Year 7 or Year 10 students to catch up on their recommended vaccines if they were absent on the day of the previous 2023 school clinics.

If you would like your child to catch up on an immunisation they missed earlier this year at school, and you have not previously provided consent, please use the online consent portal. Alternatively, paper-based consent forms are available at Student Administration.

If you have previously provided consent, and your child missed their vaccination due to absence on the day of the school vaccination clinic, their name will automatically be added to the list for students who will be having a catch up vaccination on August 23, 2023.

If you would like more information about the NSW School Vaccination Program, please see the NSW Health website, or contact our School Nurse, Bianca Foster via nurse@lindisfarne.nsw.edu.au.

Official Opening of Bahna Cafe

Despite having been unofficially open since the end of Term 1, on Tuesday, 6 June, Lindisfarne’s student-led Bahna Cafe was officially opened.

The Bahna cafe was originally started by the Year 12 cohort of 2018. They opened the cafe to cater for special events and it became a huge part of their legacy.

This legacy was continued by the Year 12s in 2019. They decided on the name Bahna Cafe, with confirmation from Uncle Victor. ‘Bahna’ means to rise, stand up, and emerge. This created a wider vision for the cafe.

The following cohort in 2020 wanted to use this cafe as a sustainability project, so they set up a roster and plan, and began opening before school and during recess. However COVID hit and largely put a hold on these plans. As COVID continued on, both the 2021 and 2022 cohorts were continually hampered in continuing to run the cafe.

However, with great help from Mrs Myers, Mrs McDonald and Mr Dwyer, as well as the many Year 12 students who have enthusiastically taken this project on board, the 2023 Year 12 cohort has officially reopened the Bahna Cafe.

With support from the school and also Ground Control Coffee, we have been able to purchase a new coffee machine to help in our endeavour to continue this terrific Year 12 legacy.

I would like to thank the teachers who have helped and supported us in getting this project off the ground again, the many students who have volunteered their time to run the cafe, and also Mrs Urquhart who has helped us in making our beautiful signage which encapsulates the meaning of this cafe.

Currently, the cafe is open to all staff and students on Friday mornings from 7:30am to 8:15am, where we offer hot drinks and light breakfast snacks such as croissants and banana bread. The cafe will also be open at recess every Tuesday, selling hot drinks for students and staff.

We welcome everyone to come and enjoy a hot drink and share in the legacy that we are creating.

Junior School French

As part of the French language learning journey in Year 4, students have embarked on a "French Food Safari" adventure, immersing themselves in the world of French foods and cheeses and the art of expressing their likes and dislikes.

Learning a second language goes beyond grammar and vocabulary; it's about embracing new cultures and broadening horizons. Through this project, our students have not only discovered the richness of French cuisine but also explored the intricate flavors and textures of various cheeses.

To further expand on their journey, Year 4 students are currently in the process of creating a captivating "French Food Safari" video. This video will showcase their discoveries of French cheeses with amusing expressions on their faces when trying new flavors. It's a testament to their enthusiasm and commitment to learning French.

Our Stage 3 DiscoverEd students have had a successful bake sale and guess the jelly beans in the jar this week to help fundraise for the Solar Buddy Program. The students are up to approximately $100. If you would like to donate to the program please use the link below.

Solar Buddy is an innovative program that raises money in order to make solar-powered lights for children in Asia and Africa that suffer from energy poverty. Kylie Thompson
Year 6 Coordinator

Head of Middle School

As we find ourselves in the penultimate week of Term 2, it's time to take stock of what we've achieved over these past weeks. The student body has made significant strides in their collective learning and development. While the school community has had many opportunities to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the students and highlight the continued and dedicated work of our staff through such events as, The Big Chill, Subject Selection evenings, various ParentEd sessions, School Camp and Business Breakfasts, to name but a few. I thank the parents and carers for the support you have shown us in every step of this term’s journey.

Online Guardians - Year 8 Student Session
Earlier in Term 2,  Nathan Verinder from Online Guardians provided an informative online safety session for parents. In continuing our focus on the importance of online safety, Online Guardians have been engaged to conduct sessions with our Year 8, 9 and 10 students on Monday, 19 June 2023.

Online Guardians provide a service that incorporates safety, awareness, and age-appropriate educational content for secondary school students. This educational session will include:

Social Networks:Bullying, safety and wellbeing
Healthy Minds:Addictions - time online and self-regulation
The Real Picture:Platforms our student's experience and identified issues
Mobile Phones:Privacy, location settings, trends
Online Gaming:Fortnite, Discord, language and group chats
Teen Culture:TikTok, Snapchat and photographs.
Safety Online:Protecting ourselves, each other and awareness
Cultures/Trends:YouTube, shorts, peer pressure and influence
Strategies:Education, Awareness & positive change

Online Guardians is an eSafety-accredited business who are expert in the field of social media and adolescent development. Led by former NSW Police Officer Nathan Verinder, Online Guardians seminars educate students on a range of topics - student safety, wellbeing, adolescent development issues and personal responsibility when engaging with social media platforms.

The Year 8 seminar session will run for 40 mins and will provide students with a clear understanding of their rights, responsibilities and support structures. This transitional schooling year can be challenging, so creating a safe and healthy culture and environment for students can be long-lasting and very beneficial. The sessions will be completed in gender groups, which has proven to be very successful and a preferred delivery method by students. The content has been tailored to our school’s needs, trends and experiences. The sessions will be extremely valuable to students and will cover both the social and legal consequences of behaviour and choice within the digital and physical world.

BEE Market Day
Parents and carers are invited to come along and support our young entrepreneurs on Tuesday 20 June and Wednesday 21 June from 12:00pm. Men’s Health Week
I am so pleased our students are continuing to take a lead in fostering an environment that promotes mental health awareness. On Tuesday, our Year 12 students took the initiative to organise an assembly in observance of Men's Health Week. This engaging forum allowed the entire Senior School to partake in crucial conversations about the importance of mental health. As part of our commitment to a balanced learning environment, we are continuously striving to create a school culture where mental health is considered as important as academic achievement. Many thanks to Mr Bill Chaffey, Dr Joseph Coyne, Mr Brett Canning and Year 12 student Bailey Keay for bringing your perspectives and personal experiences to this forum.

Year 11 Performance - Queens
I am thrilled to report the resounding success of the Year 11 production, "Queens" performed at The Citadel in Murwillumbah on Wednesday and Thursday this week. This intriguing play revolves around the life of King Henry VIII, stuck in purgatory, forced to continually confront the deeds he committed against his queens, mistresses, and courtiers. The play, written with intelligence and laced with sharp wit, was testimony to the talents and hard work of our Year 11 students and their director, Mrs Loretta Visser. Here's to many more successful productions!

Athletics Carnival
We kindly ask for your continued support in ensuring your child's presence at the Lindisfarne Athletics Carnival on Thursday, 22 June. The Athletics Carnival is treated as a regular school day. Attendance is mandatory, with the usual arrival and departure times in effect. Beyond the competition for representative team selections, these carnivals are a platform to foster School spirit. The collective support from all students is crucial and deeply appreciated.

Stage 5 WW1 Living History Incursion

On Wednesday, Lindisfarne Stage 5 History students discovered that life in the trenches during World War I was a nightmarish test of human endurance as soldiers battled death in appalling conditions. World War I was largely defined by its trench warfare, a brutal military tactic that saw opposing forces bunkered down in dug out trenches in opposing lines with a short open field filled with barbed wire and open to enemy fire known as No Man's Land stretched between.

Soldiers fighting in the trenches faced terrible conditions, with knee high mud, constant shelling, gas bombs, and disease rampant throughout the trenches. Highlights from the presentation for students included wearing some of the original soldier uniforms from the time, learning about Australian soldier experiences and gaining insight into the lifestyle the soldiers faced over many years at battle.

Shane Blackman from WW1 Living History left our students with a lasting impression and a comprehensive understanding of what the soldiers had to endure: darkness, mud, rain, corpses, guns, gas, shells, barbed wire, rats, lice, flies, cold, trench-foot, boredom and terror. Students were able to gain a deeper understanding of Australians at War, from this engaging, hands-on and fascinating presentation.

Science

Ahead in Science

The Big Science Competition is one of the biggest international science competitions run for students in years 7-10. This was a 50-minute, multiple choice competition testing science knowledge, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Questions are set in real-life, contemporary contexts, making them relatable (and interesting)! It is run in May every year and it is a real way to extend yourself beyond school science. Sitting the Big Science Competition could lead to selection in science extension programs including the Australian Science Olympiads and Curious Minds – girls in STEM.

Well done to the 18 students who put their hand up for this challenge and competed in the Big Science Competition this year. We have some outstanding results to celebrate this year, with a number of High Distinctions and Distinctions being awarded. Awards will be presented in Assembly. If you didn’t sign up this year there is always next year - I encourage you to join in, talk to Mrs McCann or ask your science teacher.

As Michaelango said  “The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it”.

Best of luck to those students who sat the Science Olympiads this week.

Rowing Report
With an incredible regatta season coming to an end, it's time to look back and celebrate some of the accomplishments of our Rowers. From the early mornings on the water to the intense regattas, students experienced a season filled with hard work and growth.

We want to express our sincere appreciation to all our rowers for their unwavering dedication and relentless efforts. Your commitment to the sport has been the driving force behind your collective success.

Whether it was pushing through gruelling training sessions or giving it your all in races, their determination has been inspiring.

This season has been marked by remarkable achievements. Our Rowers have showcased their talent and tenacity, exceeding expectations and pushing their limits.

Some of the best moments of the season include watching the Year 8 girls quad improve from coming 6th at their first regatta to finishing 2nd at the conference regatta, and then coming 4th (9 seconds between them and first place) in their division 1 race at the Trophy Regatta.

S. Wilson, A. Salmon, I. Frost, O. Dunphy, (Cox: O. Macdonald), Z. Silburn

Another highlight was seeing our girls show dominance in the single-scull category winning all the races they competed in. Pictured are Olivia Dunphy, Lily Foggo and Ruby Rhodes receiving their medals at the trophy regatta.

Another highlight was seeing our boys compete in single sculls, doubles and quads throughout the season with success. During the sprint regatta at Coomera, Ben Reeve was able to win both his heats and went the regatta undefeated.

While this is the end of the regular season, we look forward to the Queensland Central State Championship in Rockhampton, South Queensland State Championships at Wyaralong and the Queensland State Championship at Bundaberg later in the year.

Congratulations to all rowers who trained over the season and we look forward to seeing you represent yourselves and your school later in the year.

In the Year 5 division, Lindisfarne demonstrated their skills, teamwork, and determination throughout the carnival. With strong connections through the midcourt, impressive shooting, and tough defense, the team performed admirably. After an intense battle in their pool, they emerged in 3rd place. In the crossover finals, they continued to excel, securing 7th place overall with an impressive record of 2 wins and 3 losses. It was an outstanding achievement for the Year 5 team, showcasing their dedication and talent on the court.

Not to be outdone, Lindisfarne's Year 6 team also made a mark in the competition. Despite facing larger schools from South East Queensland, they demonstrated tremendous potential and tenacity. The Year 6 team's performance earned them a commendable 8th place finish, underscoring their ability to compete at a high level.

We would like to express our gratitude to the exceptional individuals who made this journey possible. Sienna Williamson deserves special recognition for her outstanding umpiring skills throughout the tournament. Her fairness, knowledge, and professionalism contributed to the overall success of the event.

Furthermore, we extend our appreciation to the dedicated coaches who supported and guided the teams. Lucy Jacks, Suzanne Evans, and Danielle Robins played instrumental roles in honing the skills of our talented netball players, instilling in them the values of teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Their expertise and commitment have undoubtedly contributed to the achievements of our students at the Gretel Tippett Competition.

Congratulations to all the Lindisfarne students who participated in the Gretel Tippett Competition 2023. Your hard work, sportsmanship, and determination have brought great pride to our school community. We applaud your achievements and look forward to witnessing your continued growth and success in the world of netball.

RECENT GAMES

NSW Rugby Far North Coast U12 7s Zone Final

Lindisfarne qualified two 7s squads to play in the Far North Coast Zone Finals on the 6th June. This was a result of our successes at the Casino Regional 7’s and Byron Bay Regional 7’s Gala Days. This meant that all members of our U12 Squad were able to attend on the day.

The squads arrived in wet and cold conditions, very different to the conditions the squads had been training in the lead-up to the day. Unfortunately, these conditions lead to a few dropped balls and pushed passes which ultimately lead to tries against both teams. Being a finals day the standard of the opposition was very high and the squads learned a valuable lesson in ball security and wet weather rugby.

Ultimately our squads finished in 4th and 6th place on the day. This is still a fantastic achievement given we are in the first year of our U12’s program.

Players of the day were Henry Alford (Lindisfarne Blue) and Crusoe Foster (Lindisfarne Gold).

Daley Norton-Knight Cup U12 teams

The Daley Norton-Knight Cup is the most prestigious Primary School Rugby Carnival on the Gold Coast. We were fortunate enough to enter teams from Sunshine Avenue and Mahers Lane on the day.

U12

Our Under 12’s squad turned up to the DNK Cup backing up from the FNC 7’s Finals only 48 hours prior. Our squad was also heavily impacted by illness and injuries in the day leading up to the event with a number of players stepping in at the last minute to fill the roster. Our thanks go to Campbell Patterson, Ron Rony Joseph and Hunter Lloyd for stepping in at short notice and playing significant roles on the day.

Given the injuries and illness the squad faced, we went into the day with no expectations other than having some fun playing 15-a-side rugby again. What a show the team put on! They walked away from the day with 3 wins and 1 draw - going undefeated throughout the day.

Pool Fixtures:

Defeated Somerset College 43-0

Drew Emmanuel College 7-7

Defeated AB Paterson College 12-0

After narrowly missing the Grand Final on points difference, the squad easily accounted for Coomera Anglican College in the 3rd place play off 27-0.

This meant the squad finished the day with a score line of 89-7. This was a truly remarkable achievement and a great reward for the months of training the squad has put in.

Our MVP on the day was Coby Ellison who starred as our fly-half and was one of the standout players of the entire tournament.

This closes off the season for our U12’s with Term 3 a chance to take a break from rugby. We look forward to getting together again in Term 4 for the Casuarina Cup and to start planning for The Armidale School Rugby Carnival in 2024.

Under 12’s CIS Rugby Trials

This week we have had 3 members of our U12 Rugby Squad attending the CIS Trials in Sydney. This is the first time we have been in a position to send players down to these trials. From these trials the CIS Team will be selected to compete at the School Sport Championships in Term 3.

Congratulations to Nate Blenkinsop, Oliver Costello and Coby Ellison.

While selections are unknown at the time of writing - we are confident the boys represented the Lions with distinction and that representative honours aren’t far away.

OTHER ITEMS

Gear Rugby Academy Holiday Camp

Please see below flyer for the Gear Rugby Academy School Holiday Camp at Bond University on the 27-28th June. This camp is being organised by one of rugby program coaches and ex-All Black, Rico Gear. It is also open for boys and girls aged 8 years and above and will be a great opportunity for all our students in the Lindisfarne rugby program. Players can register their attendance HERE

Training Notes

As we move into term 3 and winter weather, it is worthwhile mentioning that we will let you know the evening prior if training is cancelled. However as rugby is played in the elements, we will train through any adverse weather as much as possible. Students should also be in proper training attire (NOT school sports uniform) with mouthguard, boots and any other equipment they play with for every session. This requirement also includes integrated school sport on Thursday.  Alongside this, students should have a towel and spare school uniform to change into in case there is wet weather.

Stack Team APP

Thank you all for your patience with the roll out of the Stack Team app and it has been released to all students and parents. This app will be our Rugby Union program’s main form of communication for all our squads, with exception of U12 boys.

As a reminder, both parents and Boy’s U13, U15, 1st XVs and 7’s and Girl’s 7s students who have parental permission for smartphones will need to download the app and join the relevant squad in the app (e.g., 1st XV, U15 XV, U13 XV, Girls 7s).

Daly Norton-Knight Cup - Rugby 10-A-Side Gala Day
Last Thursday the Year 4 Rugby Team travelled to All Saints Anglican School to participate in the Daly Norton-Knight Cup. The DNK Cup is an annual  10-A-Side Rugby Gala Day. The day gives our year 4 students another opportunity to learn and play rugby in a 10-A-Side format. These competitions are excellent, providing the opportunity for new players to have a go and learn and develop their rugby in a safe friendly and Fun environment.

This is exactly what our year 4 team did. The team has been training for the last 5 weeks at lunch time, learning positions the rules of rugby and becoming an amazing team unit.

The following students made up our Year 4 team Flynn Brown, Luke Cecil, Darcy Clark, Ollie Condon, Zach Davison, David Dickens, Tamati Hyett, Harvey Majerovic, Channing Melville, Theo Midgely, Jack Sinclair, Harry Tatchell, George Taylor, and Harry Williams.

The day was a cracker for playing rugby with warm sunny and dry conditions, perfect for running rugby.

The team kicked off their campaign with a game against Somerset College. It was a steep learning curve and the Somerset team was well drilled, but our team was gallant in defeat going down 20-5. The boys took some great lessons from that game and applied them to the next round against AB Patterson and walked away with a hard fought victory winning the game 25 -0. The third round of competition had the Lindisfarne team up against their toughest opponents for the day in Emmanual College. This team was fast, knew the game and were tough opponents. Unfortunately, the boys went down 30 - 5 in this game but their resilience and efforts were outstanding they just kept getting up and having a go.

The last game was the most thrilling of the day against the host school All Saints, with a couple of existing rivalries and friendships across the two teams it was going to be a hard fought battle. It was exactly that with both teams trading blows and the final result being a 15-all draw.

Thank you to the parents who assisted and were there to support on the day, A massive thank you goes out to Miss Jodie Arnold for managing the team all day and a HUGE congratulations to the boys who continued to grow develop and learn throughout the entire day. It was an amazing, FUN day, well done Boys.

Hockey Gala Day
The year 3 and year 4 students finished their School Sport this term with a 6-A-Side Hockey Gala Day that was held at the Tweed Hockey Centre in Murwillumbah. Every student in years 3 and 4 was involved in the day. Each team played 3 or 4 matches in their house colours to put into practice all the skills they have been learning in sport on a Friday afternoon. The day was a lot of fun and allowed the students to gain a feel for playing competitive games of Hockey.

Thank you to Matt Bartell from Casuarina Hockey for organising and running the day, along with some of the Senior School students who assisted as officials. Thank you to the Teachers of Years 3 and 4, these teachers go above and beyond to give all our students the best experiences they can, They are all fantastic at their jobs and I can not thank them enough for all they do.

The day was a great success with lots of games and FUN and we will look to make it a permanent fixture for our year 3 and 4 students in the future.

If there are any students wishing to participate in club hockey this year there is still an opportunity to join Casuarina Hockey. They have a number of programs running in Term 3 and Term 4. If you are interested information on these programs can be found here:

The Parallel Bible 1883

It was humbling to receive the wonderful donation of this magnificent Bible dated 1883 from the family of Leon Lambie. The Bible takes pride of place in our Library within a case that was lovingly crafted by our very own Mr Matt Osmond, an absolute masterpiece of the woodwork to house and protect the Bible.

It is with much gratitude on behalf of the school that we thank Leon’s family and our very talented Mr Osmond. The Bible has created a great deal of interest from our students, in awe of the age and condition of this magnificent Bible and the case it lays in.
