Dear Parents and Guardians,
This week our Lindisfarne community celebrated NAIDOC Week. During this time, we honoured and recognised the invaluable contributions of our Indigenous Elders through many activities like the Yarning Circle and panel discussions, rock art, boomerang throwing and fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of their rich cultural heritage within our school community. We acknowledge our Elders for their roles as cultural knowledge holders, community builders, teachers, leaders, advocates, and trailblazers, guiding us with their love, strength, wisdom, courage, and knowledge. We extend our gratitude to the many staff members who wholeheartedly contributed their time and efforts to make this celebration of NAIDOC Week and the theme 'For Our Elders' a meaningful and memorable experience for our entire school community.
In addition, we were also pleased to welcome 20 students from Japan for a cultural exchange program. Witnessing the interactions and shared experiences between these students and ours has been a true example of the way these visits foster a spirit of global unity and cultural appreciation. Under the leadership of Jeremy Godden and Rebecca Wilson, the exchange program has provided unique opportunities for both groups to learn from one another, breaking down barriers and creating lasting friendships. Our visitors will be at Lindisfarne until the end of next week, and we look forward to making the most of this time, learning from each other and building meaningful connections.
Creativity and performance opportunities enrich individuals and foster a vibrant community. This was certainly the case on Wednesday evening when we celebrated the work of our dance students, particularly those who are in the final stages of their preparations for HSC in our annual Dance Showcase. This was then followed by our HSC Drama Trial Performance Assessment which took place last night. As all our Year 12 students embark on their Trial Examinations, we wish them well in this crucial step of their HSC studies.
Earlier in the week, Principal Marquardt and I attended the commissioning of Allan Guihot as the new Principal of St Columba Anglican School in Port Macquarie. As another of the Grafton Anglican Diocesan Schools, we value our close relationship with St Columba, and we send Principal Guihot and their community our prayers and best wishes as they write a new chapter in the history of their well-respected school.
As we look to next week, I wish our Year 6 students and their teachers well as they depart for Canberra on their annual school camp. We look forward to the update in our newsletter next week.
As always, thank you for your ongoing support of our school and school community.

A Prayer for our Year 12s
Please join me in praying for our Year 12s as they begin their trials next week:
Dear Lord, thank you for your constant love and care in our lives.
We ask you to watch over our Year 12s; their teachers and families during this period of HSC trials and exams.
We commend each and everyone of them to you:
Grant them good health, wisdom, knowledge, understanding, perspective and retentive memory.
May they do their best, and feel the presence of your Holy Spirit during the course of these exams.
Grant them and all our Year 12s peace of mind, and crown their efforts with success;
For Jesus’ sake, Amen.

NAIDOC Week
We have had a wonderful time celebrating NAIDOC Week, here at Mahers Lane!
As the First Nations Cultural Indigenous Engagement Coordinator I have felt extremely proud of all the students that participated in the events including ordering our special lunch of Kangaroo Chilli Con Carne on Wednesday.
Our Middle School were privileged to see the Gudginburra Dancers as well as hear about the importance of Eldership in the First Nations community and beyond.
One of the big highlights for me was the amount of students that took part in the Yarning Circle "The Voice" Discussion, it gives me hope for the things to come.
Another proud moment was when our students participated in the boomerang throwing. Uncle Boomerang (Paul) spoke with me at the end of the session and said that our students were some of the best behaved he has ever worked with, so again, well done!
One more event to come next week! We have the very talented JK47 performing on Tuesday 12.45pm in Chapel, supported by our very own gifted Josh Geoghegan.
I look forward to continuing to build stronger connections, better understanding and shared stories with students, staff and the community.

Jump Rope for Heart is the Heart Foundation’s primary school skipping challenge that helps kids move more, have fun and raise funds for lifesaving research and programs.
At Lindisfarne Junior School, we've recently launched the program. This week students received a pamphlet, keyring, and sticker outlining all the program details to take home. Additionally, we shared information through the Seesaw app to keep parents informed.
During the program, students focus on learning the basics of skipping, including two feet jumping and rope swinging.
Fundraising is a part of the program however, we are not focussed on this aspect and the fundraising is not compulsory for students to participate. The school has set a very achievable goal to aim for as a collective.
Our goal at Lindisfarne is for each child to try to raise $1 per week for term 2. The total fundraising goal would be $10 per student for the term. If we reach this target together, we will have raised over $5000 for The Heart Foundation.
In addition to fundraising, we're encouraging everyone to log their skipping hours. This will help us track our collective skipping activity as a school. So get skipping and log those hours.
Keep an eye out for all the information that has been sent home, and let's get ready to skip our way to a healthy heart and body in term 3. Join us in making a positive impact while having fun and staying active!
Skipping Club
Join us for Skipping Club starting in week 2, on Mondays and Wednesdays (July 24th and 26th). We'll gather at 7.30 am on the Basketball Court, continuing every week until week 10 (September 20th).
Skipping Club aims to promote activity, fun, and the acquisition of new skipping skills and tricks. Just like the successful Runners Club in Term 1, Skipping Club welcomes students from Kindergarten to year 4, while also encouraging parents and carers to participate. Students who complete challenges will be rewarded with certificates.
Getting active and enjoying quality time with our kids are among life's true delights. Embrace the joy of learning new skills and having loads of fun! Let's skip towards a healthier heart and body together. See you there!
Total Football Academy - After-school Program
The final Total Football Academy session will continue in Term 3. The session will be held every Monday and will continue until Week 9, concluding on Monday 11th September.
If you are interested in signing up for the Total Football Academy Program in term 3 please confirm your place by accepting the terms and conditions and making payment on Parent Lounge. There are a limited number of places available so please be quick to secure your spot.

100 Days of Kindergarten
We had an absolutely delightful day in Kindergarten as we celebrated our 100th day of school with an abundance of 100 themed activities! The day kicked off with excitement as students, teachers, and parents arrived at school dressed up as energetic 100-year-olds, bringing smiles and laughter all around.
Everyone had a blast engaging in a variety of fun activities. This included making hundreds and thousands fairy bread, creating the tallest tower with 100 cups, face and finger painting, and the 100 exercises fitness challenge!
It was a memorable day that brought the entire Kindergarten community together, celebrating a significant milestone in the most delightful way.

YEAR 6 CANBERRA TRIP
From August 1 to 4, our Year 6 students will embark on a highly anticipated journey to Canberra. This unique adventure will provide them with an in-depth understanding of the establishment and evolution of Australia's federal government. This hands-on experience is a crucial part of their education, bridging classroom teachings with real-life understanding of Australia's nation-building, democratic processes, and immigration history.
A range of activities awaits the Year 6 students, including tours of the Parliament House, Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia, National Museum of Australia, and the Royal Australian Mint. They will also enjoy an evening at Questacon, a drive through the Embassy & Lodge District and the Parliamentary Triangle and Anzac Parade. Other planned visits include the National Arboretum Canberra, the National Archives of Australia, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Mount Ainslie Lookout, Zone Bowling, and Cycle Canberra.
We'd like to gently remind parents to submit the necessary Dietary Requirements and Student Medication Authority forms.

Parent/Teacher Interviews
I would like to extend my thanks to all parents who attended the recent Parent/Teacher interviews - the last for 2023. Your presence and active participation contributed to the discussions, helping to shape a better learning experience for our students. It was a pleasure to engage with you all, gain insights about your children's learning journeys, and develop strategies for their continued success. We are grateful for your partnership and continued support of Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School, demonstrating our shared commitment to the students' academic and personal growth.
Fearless Futures
It was a pleasure to accompany 30 students from Years 8-10 to “Fearless Futures - A Summit for Female Changemakers” this week. The leadership summit was a resounding success, providing girls with a platform to enhance their leadership skills and wellbeing. It served as an interactive, supportive space for these young women, empowering them to connect and learn from experienced presenters. Our girls left with a renewed confidence to fearlessly pursue their goals and utilise their refined leadership skills, promising a brighter future for both the Lindisfarne community and themselves. The summit nurtured potential leaders, creating a vibrant and productive space for personal growth and community empowerment.
Dance Showcase
Wednesday night’s Dance Showcase highlighted the burgeoning talent of our Year 5-12 dance students. It was particularly inspiring to see the next generation of dancers collaborating with Year 12 students, bringing their choreographic visions to life. The showcase not only provided a preview for upcoming HSC Dance performances but also celebrated the fruition of months of hard work by our eisteddfod groups. The night resounded with talent and energy, reaffirming Lindisfarne’s commitment to nurturing artistic expression.
HSC Drama Trials
The HSC Drama Performance Trials proved to be a very successful evening. Held in the drama studio, the Year 12 Drama students demonstrated their theatrical talents to a limited yet appreciative audience comprising parents, staff and friends. Despite being a compulsory task, all students passionately embraced the opportunity, delivering emotionally charged and artistically mature performances. The Trials not only mirrored the actual HSC Examination but also highlighted the dedication of our students to their craft. I would like to thank their teacher, Ms Loretta Visser, for helping to prepare the students for their performances.

Surfing
The NSW State Surfing Titles were on last week in Newcastle, in what was reportedly muddling conditions.
We had two teams represent Lindisfarne after qualifying for the event through the Far North Coast Competition.
Ava Arghyros paired with Eve Daniel in the U16 Female Division and both the girls made the final and came 3rd overall. A wonderful achievement girls, well done.
Kade Martin and Lachlan Arghyros were also in the U16 Boys Division and performed well as a team but unfortunately didn’t make it through they scored a 9.00 missing out by 1.15 points. Great effort to make it that.

Spotlight on Lachlan and Ava Arghyros
Both Lachlan and Ava had three of their biggest competitions back-to-back over the last month. The Billabong Occy Grom Comp held at Snapper, The Vissla Skull Candy Grom Comp held at Lennox and the NSW State Title held in Illawarra.
The Billabong Oz Grom Comp and the Vissla Skull Candy Grom Comp are two of the biggest competitions for junior surfing and are both national and international surfing events.
Lachlan placed 2nd in the Billabong Oz Grom Comp, 7th in the Vissla Skull Candy Grom Comp and made the Quater Finals in the NSW State Surfing Titles. His performance in these events has led him to now hold 5th place in the current U16 Boys National Surfing Rankings.
Ava placed 5th in the Billabong Oz Grom Comp, made the Quater Finals at the Vissla Skull Candy Grom Comp and surfed her way into the finals at the NSW State Titles and placed 3rd, placing her once again in the NSW State team that will go onto competing at the Australian National Surfing Championships held at Phillip Island, Victoria this coming December. Ava is currently one of the Top 10 performers in the U16 female National Surfing Rankings.
Spotlight on Hunter Gaffney and Myla Naylor
Hunter Gaffney and Myla Naylor represented Currumbin Surf Club at the Qld State Pool Rescue Championships in Cairns. They both had great results. Well done girls.

Spotlight on Curtis Moore
Curtis playing futsal in Italy. Curtis travelled to Italy during the holidays to represent Australia in an international Futsal tournament. He played against teams from around the world, such as Roma Calcio AS (Italy), Futsal Des Geants (France)& Hidegkuti Sport Club (Hungary).
Spotlight on Farrah Melville
Farrah just recently got back from Barcelona representing Australia in Futsal. Her team of 12-year-old girls had some outstanding results, winning half of their games against older girls in a very tough U14 competition. Farrah was the top goal scorer for her team in the tournament. Congratulations Farrah.
Spotlight on Owen Frazer
Owen has been selected in the Far North Coast Baseball Little League team to play in the Country NSW championship in October and the NSW State Championship in April.
After only playing baseball for 9 months, Owen’s commitment to travel to Lismore for weekly games has paid off. He’s looking forward to the experience and getting some great coaching to improve his game even further. Owen plays catcher, shortstop and left field.

Rugby Union Report
Bedford College (UK)
We were very privileged to host Bedford College from the United Kingdom on Tuesday of last week with our Lindisfarne U16 and 1st XV boys squads.
U16 0-5
The rain did not dampen a spirited and unrelenting fixture against the Bedford College U16s. The early stages of the game were a stop-start affair as the weather and the fact our U16 team do not play regular fixtures together took their toll on the game. Jack Hennesey, Max Mater, Clancy Halloran and Jesse Bravington did the tough work around the breakdown which was critical to the type of game being played due to the conditions. While in the backline, Mani Lopez drove the team around the park utilising Sam Stoivin and Taj Krasna who carried hard and well in the centres. It took until the 57th minute (of 60) for Bedford to break the deadlock with their third successive attempt at a rolling maul. A 0-5 scoreline demonstrates the rugged nature of the game and a result equally laced with both satisfaction for the way the team played together but a disappointment to lose in the dying minutes knowing scoring chances had gone begging earlier in the day.
1st XV 15-5
With a few key players out and a lack of training and games for 4 or 5 weeks due to holidays, it was always going to be a tough match against a touring team that already had several tough games in the past week. Bedford College rested some of their top players but still ran out a battle hardened group to face the Lions of Lindisfarne. Having several key players unavailable gave opportunities for some of our younger members of the 1st XV to stand up and take control of the team.
Exceptional games from Sam Stovin, Taj Krasna and Max Mater (who had already played against Bedford’s u16 team) were absolute standouts. They backed up regular 1st team player Declan Brown who kept the touring team turning around with deep kicking and Will Sullivan who’s strong runs and destructive defence kept the Lions on the front foot.
A 5-0 deficit at half time (due to a lucky kick through) didn’t deter the boys, who managed to shake off the rust early in the second half where the long, high kicking game started to pay dividends when the rain started to fall. The ball became slippery and the boys took advantage of the visitors' mistakes and scored two quick tries to edge in front 12-5. Declan Brown put the result out of reach late in the game with a well taken penalty to finish the game at 15-5. A great result for a team that hasn’t played in 4 weeks and barely played in the rain all year and a fitting end to our XVs program.

Lindisfarne Rowers Selected for Gold Coast Regional Squad
There is a lot going on for Lindisfarne rowing. Recently our rowers competed at the Central Queensland State Championships held in Rockhampton as well as the South Queensland State Championships held at Wyaralong. At these events, the best of the best rowers in Queensland and Northern NSW came to compete.
Highlights:
Congratulations to Marcus Fox for his impressive performance at Rockhampton, securing a spot in the finals. Though narrowly missing out on a podium finish, his dedication and hard work are commendable. We also want to acknowledge the fantastic efforts of Lily Foggo and Ruby Rhodes, who made it to the finals in their double scull event. While they just missed out on the podium, coming 4th, their determination and skill were evident throughout the competition.
Speaking of Lindisfarne's accomplishments, our girls' single sculls team has showcased remarkable dominance. Ayla Drury, Lily Foggo, Ruby Rhodes, and Olivia Dunphy exhibited exceptional talent and determination, impressing both at Rockhampton and Wyaralong events. Their strong performances have truly been a source of pride for our school. The results are as follows:
Ayla Drury: 1st and 2nd in the finals at both Rockhampton and Wyaralong respectively
Ruby Rhodes: 2nd in the finals at Rockhampton and semifinals at Wyaralong.
Lily Foggo: Semi-finals at both regattas
Olivia Dunphy: Semi-finals at Rockhampton
With their strong performances, Ayla and Ruby were also selected into the Gold Coast U17s Regional squad. They will be competing later in the year at Bundaberg.
Meanwhile, Lindisfarne had the wonderful opportunity to host the Bedford Schools rowing squad at our sheds and conduct a joint training session with them. The students from Bedford exhibited exceptional teamwork, running like a well-oiled machine, and impressing us with their rowing skills. During the session, our coaches had the chance to exchange valuable ideas and discuss future goals for both of our rowing clubs. It was an enriching experience that fostered camaraderie and mutual learning between our teams.

AFL Senior Girls through to Quarter Finals
Congratulations to our Open Girls AFL team who, like the Junior Girls AFL team, have progressed onto the AFLQ Schools Cup Quarter Finals to be played at Yeronga on Thursday 3 August.
The girls competed hard all day and came away from the day undefeated. Next week they take on Lourdes Hill College from Brisbane for a chance to play in the Schools Cup semi-final to be held at Heritage Bank Stadium in late August.
AFLQ
Last Friday, 21st July, our boys' and girls' primary AFL teams participated in a highly anticipated round-robin tournament for the second stage of the Primary AFLQ competition.
Our girls displayed incredible determination and sportsmanship throughout the day. Despite facing tough competition, they gave it their all and represented our school admirably. We couldn't be prouder of their efforts and positive attitude on the field.
Likewise, our boys showcased remarkable skill and teamwork in their matches. They competed with great enthusiasm and came close to victory in several games. Ultimately, they concluded the competition with two losses and a draw.A big congratulations to all our competing AFL primary teams for their remarkable efforts and representing our school with such pride.

Equestrian News
There are times when us equestrian competitors seriously wonder why on earth we show horses, as against more placid and predictable guinea pigs for example. Annabelle Brown (Year 8) felt that keenly in the recent Interschool Queensland State Championships, held recently at Toowoomba. After placing Top Ten in their Dressage, Annabelle and her mount Nadia went on to have a few uncharacteristic faults in the Show Jumping.
However, despite the hiccups, their consistently great results throughout the year have since seen the pair named as overall SEQ Regional Eventing Champions! This means Annabelle and Nadia have earned their ‘golden ticket’ to be a member of the Queensland team at the National Championships, coming up at Melbourne’s Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre in September. Interschool Queensland has offered them a place on the Intermediate Preliminary Dressage team as well!
Not to be outdone, Zali Greeney (Year 9) and her handsome new horse Jag Classique also competed in Show Hunter and Elementary Dressage (the highest level so far for a Lindisfarne student at State level). Despite having been together for only 8 weeks, they too have been offered a ‘golden ticket’ on the Queensland team! Zali and Jag will be joining Annabelle and Nadia on the long trek south for Nationals.
Our best wishes to the girls and their families for smooth preparations, trouble-free journeys and a super event representing Queensland.

Gold Coast Debating Update
Junior B Success
Lindisfarne’s Junior B team (pictured below with their coach Mrs Kristy Dee) are commended for their excellent performance in their final debate against Palm Beach Currumbin High last night. The topic for their short preparation debate was: community service should be compulsory for secondary students.
For the first time ever, both teams were awarded a win because the adjudicators said it was so close they could not separate the teams. They have now won all their debates, a huge achievement for a Year 7 team debating in a competition that has them competing against both Year 7 and 8 students.
Junior A Team
Mrs Williamson’s Junior A (pictured below) travelled to A.B. Paterson College last night to compete in the quarter final of the Gold Coast Debating Competition. They performed extremely well last night and received some very positive feedback from the adjudicators. Sadly, they were narrowly defeated by their opposition.
Whilst this means they do not progress to the semi-final round of the competition, they are commended for their commitment and level of performance as Year 7 students in a Stage 4 competition.
Intermediate A success
Mrs Treacy’s Intermediate A team competed in a quarter-final at Somerset College last night against Emmanuel College. They had to argue against the contention that: unpaid work placement should be banned. Lindisfarne convincingly defeated their opposition and they now progress through to the semi-final round of the Gold Coast Debating Competition.
A huge thank you is also offered to all Lindisfarne’s debating coaches who committed their time to assisting all our debating teams this season.

Maths Classes a Sweet Treat
One of the most common questions we get in the mathematics classroom is “When are we ever going to use this in real-life?” and occasionally the answer that we as teachers give still does not really satisfy the student’s sense of needing to know what they are being taught.
One topic that nearly always elicits this question is linear relationships, which can initially seem quite abstract to our young mathematicians. However, this topic is handy in real life as it lends itself to many purposes including estimating income over time, computing the fuel consumption of a vehicle or predicting profit. Many people use linear relationships on a daily basis, even if they don’t visualise a line graph in their heads.
To help students understand this topic and allow them to visualise this useful piece of mathematics, one class of Year 9 students tested out their linear graphing skills using Skittles. They had to calculate the values to be plotted on their cartesian plane and place the Skittles in the appropriate places, allowing them to see the relationship that formed. Not only did this lesson reinforce the algebraic techniques used to graph the equations, but it also resulted in a sweet treat to finish off the day!

Year 8 Students Win at Performing Arts Festival!
On Wednesday night, The Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts hosted a magnificent Gala Night at The Murwillumbah Civic Centre. The event featured exceptional talents from the Music, Dance, and Speech and Drama Eisteddfods, who were invited to showcase their skills, while also recognising the outstanding performers with prestigious awards in various categories.
Congratulations go out to Madeline Neumann and Anna Haubek, both Year 8 students, for their especially entertaining duologue performance. Their exceptional talents earned them the highly esteemed Tweed Theatre Company Encouragement prize, a well-deserved recognition. The girls not only received a perpetual trophy as a symbol of their achievement but also a $200 bursary to support their future artistic endeavors. Bravo to these talented young ladies!

Dance Showcase 2023
We are thrilled to share the outstanding success of our recent Dance Showcase performance, which took place on Wednesday night including students from Year 5-12. The event was a true celebration of talent, dedication, and creativity, and I couldn't be prouder of our dance students.
The showcase wasn't just about the polished performances that were presented; it was about building confidence, camaraderie, and a sense of accomplishment among our students. Through teamwork and mutual support, they brought out the best in each other, making the performance truly a display of unity and harmony. This was evident by the applause and the cheering of the fellow performers in the wings watching each dance piece.
We have been so proud of the immense growth and commitment that our students demonstrated throughout the year. I would like to thank Miss Country Keast and Miss Rebecca Hassell for their support not only on the night backstage but also for the hours they have run rehearsals for students.
The dance students and I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr Rod Bertram and his production crew who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this event possible. Your dedication and support played a significant role in making this showcase a resounding success.
Finally, I want to thank the parents and families who have been an integral part of this journey, supporting and encouraging their children every step of the way.
We look forward to more showcases in the future as we continue to nurture and celebrate the artistic talents of our students at Lindisfarne.

When contemplating the concept of power, we come across varied preconceived notions regarding it. To some power could be the unlimited despot while to some it is synonymous with extrinsic factors such as wealth. Is true power possessing the ability to have others at your disposal or is it the lack of need of it? From being influential to being in control, power seems to have varied definitions. The concept of power, itself is something extremely transitory, changing from person to person and time to time. We look forward to a fruitful exchange of ideas and perspectives.
12pm, 16 August 2023
