Foreword

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we conclude yet another busy week, I am pleased to share with you the significant learning experiences and collaborative efforts that have shaped our school.

Principal Stuart Marquardt, The Reverend Constantine and our Religious Education Coordinator, Mrs Amy Blinco, are in Canberra for the prestigious 2023 Anglican Schools Australia (ASA) National Conference. This year's event is a much-anticipated gathering of the senior leadership from Australia's 160 Anglican schools and representatives from the supporting churches and communities. We look forward to their return, eager to implement the wealth of knowledge and fresh perspectives they have gained.

Our teachers and staff had the opportunity to attend a Staff Inclusive Practices Professional Development Day on Monday, 31st July. Mr Chris Varney led the session from the I CAN Network, an inclusive practices expert and an inclusion champion in education. With an inspiring background as an Autistic law graduate, a pioneer of Autistic-led service provision, and having been honoured with multiple awards, Chris's dedication to children's rights and inclusivity is nationally recognised. He shared valuable insights and techniques to enrich our commitment to an inclusive environment. Many may recognise Chris' work from an ABC feature some years ago. We are thrilled to implement the knowledge gained from this PD day and grateful to Chris for his inspirational contribution.

On Wednesday evening, together with a number of our staff, I attended the performances of our Middle and Senior ensembles at Club Tweed. It was a wonderful showcase of the exceptional talent and dedication of our students, supported by our music staff. Our enduring collaboration with Club Tweed continues to provide opportunities for our students to shine on stage and fosters a connection between our school and the community.

Last night our Year 6 students and teachers returned from Canberra, having enjoyed a wonderful few days of learning and bonding. Students explored key sites such as the Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, and the National Museum of Australia, gaining valuable insights into our nation's history and governance. I sincerely thank Mrs Cathy Cox and her team for making this opportunity possible for our Year 6 students.

Join us this Sunday, 6th August, for our Monthly Spiritual Gym service at the Mahers Lane Chapel. It's an opportunity to gather and grow together in faith and community. The evening begins at 4:30 pm with light refreshments, providing a chance to mingle and enjoy fellowship. Following the refreshments, the service will commence at 5 pm. Whether new to the community or a long-standing member, we invite you to participate in this spiritual celebration.

Finally, on this National Primary Principals’ Day, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Principal, Stuart Marquardt, for his unwavering commitment and exceptional leadership in shaping the primary education landscape within our P-12 School. I also acknowledge all the dedicated educators and leaders across our school who play a vital role in nurturing our primary students' growth and academic journey.

Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Guardians,

Anglican Schools Conference 2023 and Visit To Canberra
Mr Marquardt, Mrs Blinco and I are in Canberra attending the Anglican Schools Australia Annual Conference. It was a pleasure to pay a surprise visit to our Year 6 students and staff on camp in Canberra. From all accounts, our students are having a wonderful time and are privileged to have the experiences being offered by the camp to learn, grow, connect with each other, and be inspired by the rich history and culture of our Nation’s Capital.

NAIDOC Week 2023
We concluded NAIDOC Week at Lindisfarne with an Indigenous Dance performance at the Sunshine Avenue Chapel Service on Monday, a Senior School Assembly on Tuesday morning, and an uplifting  lunchtime performance by Lindisfarne’s talented musician, Josh Geoghegan, and the famous local Indigenous rapper, Jacob Paulson a.k.a. JK-47. The audience was thrilled by wonderful and uplighting performances filled with messages about love, hard work, unity, dreaming big, and finding the good in life. Thank you to all who made our NAIDOC Week events a huge success.

‘Spiritual Gym’ on Sunday, August 6 at 4.30pm
You are warmly invited to the next ‘Spiritual Gym-Family Eucharist’ -on Sunday, 6 August at 4.30pm (refreshments), followed by the Service of Eucharist at 5pm. This is a family event and all are welcome for prayer, fellowship, encounter, connection and spiritual nourishment. I look forward to seeing you at this Service.

For Inspiration: A Poem by Dawna Markova
I will not die an unlived life
I will not live in fear
of falling or catching fire.
I choose to inhabit my days,
to allow my living to open me,
to make me less afraid,
more accessible,
to loosen my heart
until it becomes a wing,
a torch, a promise.
I choose to risk my significance;
to live so that which came to me as seed
goes to the next as blossom
and that which came to me as blossom,
goes on as fruit.

May we have the courage to ‘inhabit our days’, live life to the full: free from fear and rich with meaning, purpose and fruitfulness.
I wish you a relaxing and restful weekend.
God bless you and bless you richly!

The Reverend Constantine Osuchukwu
Chaplain

Celebrating Jarjum’s Day at Preschool

Children’s Day is a time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities and all Australians, celebrate the strengths and culture of our children. It is an opportunity for us to show our support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, as well as learn about the crucial impact that culture, family and community play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child.

This year at Preschool we celebrated Jarjum’s Day on Wednesday with a selection of different activities and Indigenous inspired experiences.

We were very thankful to have Mrs Gypsy and Mrs Narelle leading the day and sharing their wisdom and knowledge with us.
Mrs Maria made us some wattle seed damper and lemon myrtle bush tea that everyone sampled.
It was a great day celebrating our little Jarjums.

Jump Rope For Heart
Jump Rope for Heart is the Heart Foundation's primary school skipping challenge, encouraging kids to move, have fun, and raise funds for lifesaving research and programs.

The students at the Junior Campus have been on fire with their skipping this week. The older students are practising their 50 skips in a row while the younger students are working on the basics of jump and turn the rope.

We have already accumulated over 28 hours of skipping outside our school programs and have raised an AMAZING $5,554.00 for the Heart Foundation. Our top 5 fundraisers are Isla B - 4S, Sailor L - 4S, Eloise N -2H, Eadie M - 1O, and Zali S - 1T who have all raised well over $300 each what an outstanding effort, great job girls.

Don’t forget to log your skipping hours. This will show us how many hours per week we, as a school are skipping. So get skipping and those hours!

Keep up the great work at home and remember Skipping makes our Hearts Healthy.

Skipping Club
Skipping Club launched with enthusiasm last week, attracting over 85 students, parents, and carers. It is proving to be an awesome way to kick off your Monday and Wednesday morning. Join us on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 7.30 am on the Basketball Court until Week 10 (20th Sept). All students from Kindergarten to Year 4, as well as parents and carers, are welcome to participate.

The idea of skipping Club is to get active, have some fun and learn some new skills and tricks while skipping. Skipping Club is open for all students from Kindergarten to year 4 and we also encourage parents and carers to join us. We have had a number of students and parents complete the ‘100 Club’ which is continuous skipping for 100 skips in a row, there is also a ‘50 Backwards’ Challenge, ‘20 Double Under’ Challenge and the ‘200 Club’ challenge to achieve. Challenges can only be completed at skipping club and you can only attempt one challenge per day, so get along to skipping club and have a go.

Those students who achieve one of the challenges will be awarded a certificate on assembly for their efforts.

Getting active and having FUN with our kids is one of the truly great joys in life. Get up, get active, come along and learn some skills and tricks and have heaps of FUN and let’s get skipping to a healthy heart and body.

YEAR 6 CANBERRA TRIP
This week marked an important milestone for our Year 6 students who embarked on their educational trip to Australia’s National Capital. The students had the opportunity to visit many significant landmarks such as the Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, and the National Museum, each providing a unique insight into the nation's history and democratic process.

Their visit to the Parliament House offered a closer look at the processes of government, while the War Memorial allowed them to pay their respects and learn more about Australia's military history. Their experience at the Australian Electoral Commission broadened their understanding of Australia's voting process.

Throughout the trip, the students participated in engaging and interactive learning programs, linking their classroom studies to real-world contexts. These firsthand experiences have deepened their understanding of Australia's democratic values and heritage.

I would like to express my gratitude to the staff who have facilitated this memorable learning experience for our students.

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS
A reminder to parents and carers of Stage 3 students about the upcoming Parent-Teacher Interviews. These important meetings are scheduled for next week on Wednesday and Thursday, from 3:30 pm to 7:00 pm. The interviews will be conducted in the O Block Commons. Rugby Union Report

RECENT GAMES

NSW Rugby Far North Coast 7s
Our boys U16 and U18 7s squads and girls U16 7s squad played in the NSW Rugby Far North Coast 7s tournament at Casuarina Rugby Club last Thursday. This was a great tournament for Lindisfarne with all 3 squads qualifying for the NSW Rugby Far North Coast 7s Zone Finals on 17 August.

Boys U16
The u16 boys team played only two games at the FNC 7s qualifying tournament before the day was cut short by a major injury to one of the opposing players.  The boys played Mullumbimby High first and managed to run out winners in the second half due to a greater rugby knowledge and some solid defence.  The second game came down to the wire with the difference being some well taken conversions.  This means we qualify for the regional tournament and the boys know they have a lot of improvement in them before this and will be training hard.

Boys 1st 7
Our boys 1st 7 played three games against the same opponent in this tournament, Byron Bay High School. Despite being short on a number of key players, our boys were undefeated with scores of 21-12, 26-5 and 26-14 across the three games.  Standouts were Cimmaron Crawford, who showed some great speed and defence, and Harry Davison-Long, with some powerful carries, while Declan Brown and Jack Kerridge both showed a high level of skill and playmaking ability. We also had a number of players, Taj Krasna, Samual Stovin and Liam Reardon, who played up from our U16 squad and performed admirably.

Girls U16 Blue and Gold
Our Girls had two U16 teams entered and played two games each. The girls had a few ups and downs with the focus being on developing their skills and teamwork. The Blue team had a win against Xavier College and then a loss against our Gold team. The Gold team had a slow start with a loss against Xavier but found some momentum when they faced our Blue team. Standout performances of the day were Mikalah Teale and Seannah Weston in the Blue team, and the Gold team standouts were Ruby Power and Tiggi Groves.

Training Notes
As we continue into term 3, it is worthwhile mentioning that all players and families should assume our Tuesday morning training will ALWAYS BE ON and we will let you know the evening prior if training is cancelled. Students should also be in proper training attire (NOT school sports uniform) with mouthguard, boots and any other equipment they play with for every session. This requirement also includes integrated school sport on Thursday.  Alongside this, students should have a towel and spare school uniform to change into in case there is wet weather.

Stack Team APP
The Stack Team app has been released to all students and parents and this app will be our Rugby Union program’s main form of communication for all our squads, with exception of U12 boys.

As a reminder, both parents and Boy’s U13, U15, 1st XVs and 7’s and Girl’s 7s students who have parental permission for smartphones will need to download the app and join the relevant squad in the app (e.g., 1st XV, U15 XV, U13 XV, Girls 7s).

To download the Stack team app, use the following links:
● iOS: https://www.teamapp.com/ios-ap...

Futsal
Last week, numerous Lindisfarne Futsal teams travelled to Brisbane for the South Queensland Futsal Championships of Champions held at Nissan Arena. To qualify for the event, teams needed to progress through the Regional Championships, held on the Gold Coast in Term 2.

U12 Girls
Our under 12 Girls team demonstrated poise and cohesion, securing the top spot in their group and making it all the way to their age group grand final. Despite a spirited effort in the final, they concluded the competition as the deserving runners-up. This is a phenomenal achievement, which sees them get offered an opportunity to represent Lindisfarne in the Australian Champions of Champions.

Shaking up Shakespeare

Year 11
English teacher Ms Katy Otto was recently awarded a Regional Teacher Mentorship with Bell Shakespeare Company in Sydney and spent four intensive days working with Bell Educators and UK Shakespeare expert and writer Ben Crystal at the end of Term 2. This prestigious opportunity is only offered to 30 teachers Australia wide and our students are most certainly already benefitting from her experience.

Ms Otto is currently completing a Master’s degree focusing on teenagers and Shakespeare and as such, she has begun to implement many of the techniques in class. Year 11 English Advanced students have begun studying the tragedy “Othello” this term and were invited to build a ‘Moved Synopsis’ of the play using props and costumes to add to the understanding of the story.

The idea behind this engaging and fun exercise is to remind the students that Shakespeare’s work was created to be seen and heard and that his work continues to be relevant due to his deep understanding of humanity, and the extraordinary language he used to create his characters. Applying rigorous scholarly analysis to their study is part of the Stage 6 students’ focus, however, the constant link back to humanity that performance offers is crucial to students’ enjoyment of Shakespeare.

Year 8 and Year 10
On Wednesday our Year 8 and Year 10 students were treated to live performances of Shakespeare's timeless masterpieces, "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth" courtesy of the Grin and Tonic. The two person production saw the stage became a portal to the past, transporting young minds to a world of passion, tragedy, ambition, and fate.

Witnessing the bard's celebrated works on stage allowed us to revisit the enduring significance of Shakespeare's writing. The students saw the universal themes, intricately woven characters, and poetic language come to life and the Troupe highlighted the ideas that continue to resonate across generations.

For our Year 10 students, this abridged version of “Macbeth” facilitated reflection upon the live performance of Shakespeare’s tragedy by the Murwillumbah Theatre Company earlier this year.

These viewing opportunities have undoubtedly had a significant impact on our students’ understanding of literature and the enduring legacy of Shakespeare's unparalleled contributions to the world of storytelling.

Year 12 Drama Camp and Trials

Year 12 Drama students had a wonderful inaugural ‘Drama Camp’ experience on Friday 23rd June & Saturday 24th June, working with a guest practitioner from the Brisbane-based physical theatre company “Zen Zen Zo”. With a focus on the Group Performance, an 8 - 12 minute piece of original polished improvisation, students worked at the Boat Shed to enhance their physicalisation, timing and use of place to inspire movement and dynamics. On Saturday students rehearsed and refined, applying the skills developed from the previous day to their Group Performances, culminating in an ‘open rehearsal’ with a parental audience for constructive feedback. The event was a great success and enhanced the skills of students, as was apparent in their recent Performance Trial, held last week. We wish the Year 12 Drama students great success with their upcoming HSC Examination later this month.

I am writing to introduce myself as the new coordinator of the Lindisfarne String Program, which I am keen to be a part of.  I am extending a warm invitation to all string students to attend our lunchtime rehearsals, even if you have not previously been involved in an ensemble. We are working towards exciting performance opportunities and have a fresh repertoire for all ensembles.

Rehearsals are as follows:
Monday lunch - String Ensemble (Years 5-8) Chapel
Tuesday lunch - Chamber Strings (Years 9-12 and advanced students in Years 5-8) PA11
Wednesday lunch - String Quartet (selected students) C14/12

These rehearsals offer an exceptional opportunity for our young musicians to refine their skills further, deepen their musical understanding, and develop a strong sense of camaraderie with their fellow ensemble members.

There is an ensemble for students of all experience levels and for students who are unsure of which rehearsal to attend, please drop into the Music department to discuss your options or send me an email at carla.vanderwallen@lindisfarne.nsw.edu.au

Visual Art and Design Showcase

Lindisfarne students from Preschool through to Year 12 have been working hard to develop amazing art and design works to display at the 2023 Art and Design Showcase on the 25th - 27th of August held in Ngahriyah on the Mahers Lane campus. Amongst the works on display will feature HSC major works from Visual Arts, Textiles and Design, Industrial Technology and Multimedia.

Our Junior School students have been developing their artworks for the showcase with their classroom teachers and each student from Sunshine Avenue will have a piece of art on display. All students who study Visual Arts from Year 5 to 12 will have a variety of paintings, sculptural and interactive works on display. The TAS department has planned an interactive VR experience, as well as other 9-11 student work from Textiles and Industrial Technology.

We are delighted to announce watercolourist Sharon Muir and innovative projection artist Craig Walsh will feature their works on the opening night. Craig Walsh will feature his projection work MONUMENTS, and Sharon Muir will have some of her detailed watercolour works on display.

We welcome the entire school and extended community to come and celebrate the creativity from our students on opening night, Friday 25th August at 6pm. Please RSVP to the opening night by clicking the link just below the flyer for catering purposes. If you cannot make the opening, the exhibition will be open for viewing to the general public on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th from 10am until 3pm.
