Foreword

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

In celebrating the annual Speech Days this week, we are reminded that the awards are not just about the award recipients. They are a testament to the extraordinary talent our students and staff possess across our school and act as recognition of individual and collective effort. Our Speech days also act as a time of celebration as we give thanks and gratitude for the high standards, dedication, and community connections in our school and, importantly, highlight the tremendous value our staff, parents, and the Lindisfarne community place on all aspects of learning and education.

On behalf of the School Community, I extend hearty congratulations to the respective Subschool Dux and Proxime Accessit recipients.

Junior School
Joint Junior School Dux recipients are Lachlan Cornell and Olivia Reynolds.

Middle School
Proxime Accessitof the Middle School is Alicia Brown.
Dux of the Middle School is Matilda Daniel.

Senior School
The Proxime Accessit of the Senior School is Hunter Yeats.
The 2023 Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School Dux is Zachary Holtsbaum.

For every student of the class of 2023, I hope that you will feel an enduring connection to Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School and that you will forever feel a part of this school and community, no matter where life might take you.

Remembering ‘that you never actually leave a school like Lindisfarne; you just stop attending every day.’

Head of Senior School Kate Cornell shared these heartfelt words to the class of 2023 at our Senior School Speech Day.

As I reflect on my journey since joining Lindisfarne a few years ago, I am reminded of the conversations I had with our staff about the 2023 cohort. They described you as a group who are diverse and kind. Now, having spent a significant amount of time with you, I can confirm that they were absolutely right! The Year 12 students have left an indelible mark on the hearts of the Lindisfarne community throughout their time at the School.

Our time together has been a journey of mutual growth and understanding. We have rejoiced in your achievements, big and small, and have stood by you, offering support through the challenges. Through these experiences, we have discovered the resilience that defines each one of you. Your strength and determination have not only inspired us but have also left a legacy for all of us at Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School.’

In order to recognise the lasting impact the class of 2023 has left at Lindisfarne, we would like to offer you a gift.

This is “Forever Young” a beautiful tribute to the class of 2023 directed by Deputy Principal Charlotte Lush.

This year, we farewell two esteemed and long-serving staff members, Suellen Walker and Hamish Inksetter, who retired from Lindisfarne, each having given over 20 years of service to the school. We congratulate Suellen and Hamish on their retirement and distinguished careers, with students always at the centre of their work.

We farewell our First Nations Cultural Engagement coordinator, Narelle Urqhardt, as she relocates to Victoria to support extended family. Narelle has had a profound influence on our School, and we hope that she will continue to return to our School when time allows.

Thank you to all members of our School community for your support throughout 2023 as we shared our ongoing Lindisfarne story and as we continued the important work to develop a world-class school for the children and families of the southern Gold Coast, Tweed Coast, and northern New South Wales.

I extend the very best wishes to all members of the school community for a safe and blessed Christmas and a very happy New Year.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;

And the government shall be upon his shoulder,

And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,

Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

From the Wellbeing Team

What a wonderful year 2023 has been for our Wellbeing Team. We were privileged to support more than 300 students, their Families and Teachers across both Campuses. We really love being part of the Lindisfarne Community and very much appreciate all of the support we receive to carry out our roles, with their many and varied functions.

This year we sadly farewelled Susi Meyers, off to a new exciting role in the NT and we welcomed Tahnee Serone. We also continued our partnerships with local Universities, by hosting Psychology and Counselling Students. Our call out Senior Students for their participation in a Student Wellbeing Committee was graciously answered by a great many students, who led a range of events including: International Women’s Day and Men’s Health Day Assemblies, RU Ok Day Activities, Body Kind Workshops for our Year 6 Students, Wear it Purple Day and the formation of our GSA, The Wellbeing Festival Activities and most recently our HTG ‘12 days of Kindness challenge’ Won by Ms Sharon Foyster and Ms Julie McDowell’s classes.

We again enjoyed meeting and spending time students and Staff at Lunch Time Groups, The Rite Journey, Camps and those who pop into the Wellbeing Centre to help out with our collection of Puzzles.

We’re off for a restorative break to fill up our compassion cups, to spend time with friends, family and in some solitude. We also hope that you have an opportunity to carve out time to replenish after a busy year. It’s also a great time to use those new year resolution pledges to be intentional about how you wish to spend your energies in 2024. Amplify what’s already working, get back to basics with your routines (more on this in our 2024 Sleep Challenge) and give yourself permission to move on from practices and activities that no longer support your wellbeing.

We know that the summer break can present a range of challenges too and so we encourage you all to actively take care of each other at home and at events, check in regularly with each other, make social plans, have activities to look forward to and don’t feel guilty about spending quality time in the hammock with a book. But, if it does all get too much, remember early intervention is key to a good recovery and there are a number of local, online and telephone services which are available over the festive season.

Please find some helpful resources on our Wellbeing Links.

Have an excellent and exciting break and get in touch with your Student’s House Tutor or Class Teacher to discuss a referral to the Wellbeing Team in 2024 if support is required.

Merry Christmas,

Exciting Opportunity: Nationwide Study on Childhood Anxiety

We're thrilled to share an incredible opportunity tailored for families with children facing anxiety challenges! The School of Psychology at Griffith University, led by Professor Allison Waters and a team of childhood anxiety disorder experts, is embarking on a groundbreaking nationwide study. This initiative, generously funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council, aims to make a tangible impact on understanding and alleviating childhood anxiety.

The study focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of two computer-delivered treatments designed to assist children in managing their attention and, consequently, reducing anxiety. One treatment is centered around attention control, while the other is based on cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Childhood anxiety, characterised by nervousness, worry, and fear triggered by specific events or expectations, can pose challenges for children in various situations. Excessive anxiety may hinder their ability to engage in everyday activities. This project seeks to determine the comparative effectiveness of the two treatment conditions in alleviating children's anxiety disorders.

We warmly invite all families with anxious children to consider participating in this nationwide study. Your involvement can genuinely make a difference! Together, let's contribute to the well-being of our children and collaboratively pave the way for practical solutions, ensuring our young ones can confidently navigate life's challenges.

Junior School

From the Head of Junior School

As we close out another remarkable year, I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for the unwavering support from the Sunshine Ave community. Together, we have navigated through the challenges and celebrated countless successes that have made this academic year truly exceptional.

One of the highlights of the year has been the plethora of performance opportunities that our talented students have embraced with enthusiasm. From musical showcases to theatrical productions, each performance has been a testament to the creativity and dedication of our students, with a special mention to the enchanting "Lion King Kids'' production. The roaring success of this performance showcased not only the artistic talents of our students but also their commitment to teamwork and storytelling.

Our sporting achievements have been nothing short of extraordinary, with our young athletes demonstrating exceptional skill, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Whether on the field, court, or track, our students have excelled and made us proud, embodying the spirit and values of Lindisfarne in every competition.

The Colour Run was a vibrant and energetic event that brought our community together in a spirit of fun and camaraderie. It was heartening to see students, families, and staff joining forces to create a kaleidoscope of colours, reflecting the diversity and unity that defines Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School. As the culminating activity in our inaugural Festival of Wellbeing, this is something we’ll certainly be planning again in the future.

This week’s Speech Day was a magnificent occasion where we gathered to celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of our students. It was a day filled with pride and joy as we recognised the hard work, perseverance, and exceptional talents that each student brought to our school community. Congratulations to all of the award winners.

As we reflect on these highlights and countless other moments throughout the year, it is fair to say that 2023 has been nothing short of amazing. The growth, achievements, and memories created by our students are a testament to their dedication, the dedication and hard work of their teachers, and the supportive community that surrounds them.

The Ringing of the Bell for our Year 4 students on their final day at Sunshine Ave once again proved to be a heartwarming and uplifting way to end the school year. It was great to see so many parents, carers, grandparents and special friends join all of the K - 4 students for a fitting farewell. We wish the Yr 4s of 2023 all the very best for their future studies. I hope you all enjoy your time in Middle School and make the most of the amazing opportunities it has to offer. Thank you also for your legacy of leadership and dedication, kindness and community. It has been wonderful having you all as role models for our younger students who, no doubt, can’t wait to fill your shoes.

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to each family for entrusting Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School with the education and growth of your children. Your involvement, encouragement, and partnership have been invaluable, contributing significantly to the success of our school.

Lastly, I want to express my deepest thanks and appreciation to the fantastic teaching and support staff of the Junior School. Your caring and professional approach have truly made our school a beautiful place to work and learn. This past year has been filled with remarkable growth and improvement, and I eagerly look forward to another brilliant year in 2024, after a well-deserved break, of course. A special shout-out is in order for Mrs Angela Mundy, who, as Acting Assistant Head of the Junior School this year, has provided an incredible amount of support to our school, especially to me. As we step into 2024, I'm confident that Mrs. Mundy will bring many more great things to our school in her new role as Dean of Students. Thank you Mrs Mundy.

Wishing you all a joyous holiday season filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments. May the new year bring continued success, growth, and happiness to each and every member of the Lindisfarne community.

SUMMER LOSS

As you prepare for the Christmas holidays, it is important for learning to continue. Studies show that during the Summer break, students tend to lose some of the important academic gains made during the school year and this is regarded as “Summer Loss”.

Here are 5 tips on how to reduce the Summer Loss

  1. Encourage non-school-related summer reading - When children select reading materials themselves and read for enjoyment, they receive the most gains in reading achievement, including better reading comprehension, writing style, vocabulary, spelling, and grammatical development

  2. Find a summer reading program - Many libraries offer summer reading programs, specifically with the goal of combatting summer lag for students of all ages. These programs will vary by library or location, but the overall intention is typically the same: to make reading a fun activity for students

  3. Turn summer holiday destinations into learning experiences - if you are planning to visit a new city, find a few books set in that city or even reference videos to share with your kids to get excited about the trip. If you’re taking a road trip, use the mileage as an opportunity to present your child with some fun math-related challenges, like calculating the time between road stops based on the distance to travel and kilometers per hour.

  4. Author of Dog Man and Captain Underpants, Dav Pilkey’’s Fun Stuff website, including word challenges, can foster collaboration or competition around the dinner table. Scholastic offers free resources including colouring pages as well as story starters and speech bubble writing activities for Pilkey’s “Dog Man” series.

  5. Part-time jobs and volunteer work, offer unforeseen learning opportunities

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPEECH DAY

This year’s Speech Day was a memorable gathering, featuring student performances, award presentations, and speeches from our School and community leaders. It was a pleasure to recognise the hard work and achievements of our students in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities.

Our students' performances during the ceremony were an absolute highlight, showcasing the diverse talents within our school. Well done to all of our performers for their dedicated efforts in adding such vibrant entertainment to this special event.

As the year ends, I want to express my gratitude to the students and parents who have shared messages of thanks and support. Your engagement strengthens our School community. It's been rewarding to see our Middle School students grow and learn over the past year, both in their studies and personally.

I’d also like to acknowledge the dedication of our staff at Lindisfarne. Their commitment to our students’ success is invaluable, and I look forward to another year of collaboration. To the departing teachers, they go with our gratitude and best wishes.

As we approach the festive season, I extend to you and your families my warmest wishes for a blessed Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year. May this Christmas bring you peace and joy, and the New Year be filled with hope and new beginnings.

We’re excited to welcome you back for the start of Term 1, 2024 on Monday, 29 January 2024.

Please note, that the School will be closed from 12:30 pm on Wednesday, 20 December 2023, and will reopen at 8:00 am on Wednesday, 4 January 2024.

Enjoy your holidays.

From the Head of Senior School

Head of Senior School

It is with pleasure I reflect on the recent events that have brought our school community together.

The Year 10 Dinner Dance at Seagulls was a resounding success, marking a memorable milestone for our students. The evening was filled with laughter and dancing, creating memories that our Year 10s will cherish for years to come. This fantastic event was made possible by the tireless efforts of our dedicated staff, who went above and beyond to ensure our students could enjoy this special occasion. Their commitment to creating a wonderful experience for our students is deeply appreciated. (Photos will be shared via email to students and parents next week).

Last Sunday, we gathered for the well-attended Community Carol Service in the School Chapel. It was a heartwarming opportunity to come together and celebrate the Christmas season, filled with music and a sense of togetherness. These moments remind us of the strong community spirit that defines our school.

This week was also significant as we celebrated three Speech Days across the various subschools, culminating in the Senior School Speech Day on Wednesday. It was a proud moment to recognise and celebrate the many talents of our student body and the successes of 2023. The achievements of our students in academics, sports, arts, and service highlight the diverse and rich experiences Lindisfarne offers.

I had the pleasure of attending the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup in Coomera and Carrara on Wednesday evening. Volleyball is a growing sport at Lindisfarne, and it was inspiring to see our teams compete with such skill and sportsmanship against schools from across Australia. The dedication and teamwork displayed by our students were commendable, and it is pleasing to see our school making a mark in this competitive arena.

As we draw close to the end of the year, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all our students, parents and staff for their contribution to making this year truly wonderful. Your support, enthusiasm, and commitment to our school community are what make our school a special place.

As we part for the holiday season, I wish each of you a safe and holy Christmas. May this time be filled with joy, peace, and cherished moments with loved ones. I look forward to welcoming you all back in the new year, ready for another exciting chapter in our school's story.

Tech Innovators of Tomorrow: A Swift Journey with Apple

Exploring the World of Coding at Lindisfarne

In an exhilarating fusion of technology and education, Lindisfarne recently hosted an event that marks a significant milestone in our commitment to nurturing the next generation of tech innovators. This special session, organised in collaboration with Apple, provided a unique opportunity for our students in years 9-12, to dive into the world of app development using Swift, Apple's powerful and intuitive programming language.

The two days of training will form part of the preparation for the prestigious Swift Student Challenge. The Swift Student Challenge, details of which can be found here, is an extraordinary platform that empowers students to express their coding skills and bring their innovative app ideas to life.

The Apple Experience: Learning from the Best

During the session, experts from Apple guided our students through the basics of Swift and the fundamentals of app design. It was an immersive experience that combined learning and fun, encouraging students to think critically and solve problems creatively.

Empowering Future Innovators

This initiative aligns perfectly with our school’s vision of integrating technology into education. By exposing our students to real-world applications of coding at an early age, we aim to ignite a passion for technology and innovation that will drive them towards future success in the digital world.

A Glimpse into Tomorrow

The students' enthusiastic participation and remarkable creativity during the session were testaments to their potential as future tech leaders. We are confident that the skills and knowledge they acquired will serve as a solid foundation for their participation in the Swift Student Challenge and beyond.

Lindisfarne is proud to be at the forefront of educational innovation, and we eagerly anticipate seeing the incredible apps our students will develop. Stay tuned for more updates on their journey in the Swift Student Challenge!

Special thanks to Mrs Brennan, Mrs McCann and Mr Temperly for supporting these days and making this all happen.

Merry Christmas to all of you, and your families. Thank you for your contributions to the sports program throughout the year.

We are working and planning at the moment to make each program bigger and better for next year, but for now, a good old-fashioned rest and reset is in order.

Stay safe, and see you on the flip side of the new year.

Volleyball - Australian Schools Cup

Currently underway is the Australian School Volleyball Cup - which is the single largest school sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere. Think, 2 times the size of the Queensland All Schools Touch Tournament, and you would be on par with this mega-tournament, with over 5500 students swarming into the Gold Coast from NZ and the Australian States and Capital Territories.

We have three teams currently representing Lindisfarne in Division 3. The pool games are still underway, with finals taking place on Saturday.

Some random photos of our teams in action.

Spotlight on Elke Knapp

Elke’s Tweed Little Athletics relay team competed at the State Championship in Brisbane on the weekend, Elke ran the 2nd leg and her team secured a silver medal in the 4 x 100m. The girls shaved 1 second off their regional 4x100 time, clocking 54:67.

HOCKEY SIGN ON 2024

Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School and Casuarina Hockey Club have been inextricably linked for 20-odd years, supporting each other and the community both on and off the field.

The values of the school and club run deep in our culture. With so many students past and present playing hockey for Casuarina Hockey Club, we are truly a family club.

We offer a range of fun learning and training environments - with games for all levels of players.

Many students go on to Representative levels for Tweed & Gold Coast, Hockey Queensland, Australian School and National Junior and Senior Teams.

Come and give Hockey a go! We know you’ll love it!

Rowing Christmas Presentation

Although the rowing season is tapering off there is still a lot going on at the shed. As the year comes to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on the incredible journey we've had on the water. It's been a season filled with hard work, camaraderie, and, of course, the thrill of competition.

Our End-of-Season Christmas Presentation was a joy that brought together rowers, coaches, and supporters to celebrate the achievements and memories we've created throughout the season.

The evening kicked off with heartfelt speeches from our coaches, expressing gratitude for the dedication and hard work exhibited by each member of our rowing community. Awards were presented, acknowledging outstanding performances, sportsmanship, and the unwavering commitment demonstrated by our rowers.

Just a week after our end of season presentation, our rowers were back in action, gearing up for the Grade Championship Regatta. The air was filled with anticipation as teams from various clubs and schools gathered to compete for the coveted grade championship title.

Our athletes showcased incredible skill and determination, navigating the water with precision and speed. The regatta was a testament to the hard work and dedication our rowers put into their training throughout the season.

As we bid farewell to the current season, let's carry the spirit of celebration, gratitude, and determination into the new year. The river awaits us with its challenges and triumphs, and we're eager to embark on another exciting journey with Lindisfarne Rowing in 2024!

Making Matcha

🍵 Making Matcha 🍵

Year 7 Japanese students completed their “Let’s Eat!” unit this week by making matcha まっちゃ 抹茶. Students scooped the matcha powder with a chashaku into a chawan, hot water was added, they then whisked the matcha with a chasen before sampling their quintessentially Japanese creation. Some students enjoyed their matcha and others found it a little bitter. We all, however, agreed that next time we should have some wagashi to complement the matcha!

❓Did you guess that cha is the Japanese word for tea?

5 Fun Facts About Matcha:

1. Zen Connection: Matcha has deep roots in Zen Buddhism. Monks used to drink matcha to stay awake and alert during long meditation sessions. The calm alertness induced by matcha helps in achieving a state of mindfulness.

2. Shade-Grown Brilliance: Matcha is produced from shade-grown tea leaves. The shading process increases the chlorophyll content, giving matcha its vibrant green colour and boosting its amino acid content. This not only enhances the fla5vour but also contributes to the potential health benefits of the tea.

3. Whole Leaf Goodness: Unlike traditional green tea, where you steep the leaves and discard them, matcha is made by grinding the entire tea leaf into a fine powder. This means you're consuming the whole leaf and all its nutritional goodness when you enjoy a cup of matcha.

4. Caffeine with a Calming Twist: Matcha contains caffeine, but it also contains an amino acid called L-theanine. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine results in a unique synergy that provides a calm, focused energy rather than the jittery feeling associated with some other caffeinated beverages.

5. Culinary Creativity: Matcha isn't just for sipping. Its versatile flavour profile makes it a favourite in culinary creations. From matcha lattes to matcha-flavoured desserts and even savoury dishes, this vibrant green powder adds a unique and delicious twist to a wide range of recipes. It's not just a beverage; it's a culinary adventure!

JTAN Nengajo Competition

JTAN Nengajo Competition

Each year, the Japanese Teachers’ Association of NSW holds a Nengajo (New Years greeting card) competition. 2024 will be the Year of the Dragon according to the Japanese zodiac cycle.

Students in Stages 3 and 4 were invited to design a postcard with a dragon theme. Congratulations to the ten students who have been chosen to represent our school in this competition. The postcards will be sent away for judging, with the winners receiving a certificate and a small Japanese-themed prize. Good luck to those who have entered!

Year 10 Japanese

Year 10 Japanese

The Year 10 Japanese class has worked exceptionally hard this year and are to be congratulated on their dedication to their studies.

Earlier in the term, the students wrote letters to their penpals in Japan, allowing them to utilise their Japanese writing skills and build their global citizenship skills, by making connections with young people in Japan.

For assessment task 4, the students had to create a digital presentation for a Japanese exchange student coming to Australia, highlighting what the Japanese students might find interesting or surprising about an Australian homestay experience.

The quality of the submissions was outstanding and the assessment task gave the students the opportunity to combine their Japanese skills and artistic talents.

For our end of year celebration, the Year 10 Japanese class participated in a kokedama-making workshop. Kokedama (a Japanese word that means ‘moss ball’) is a ball of soil, covered in moss, in which an ornamental plant grows. Kokedama originated in Japan and are very popular in Japanese gardens and homes. The students enjoyed making their very own moss balls.

We finished off the celebration by enjoying some yummy Pocky and refreshing Ramune.
