Foreword

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Kinetic (Surfside) Bus Services have advised of planned industrial action for Monday, 12 February, that will impact on Monday morning Kinetic Bus services to School. This is unfortunate and disruptive, and we will have additional staff on hand Monday morning to assist with arrival at School. Please allow extra time to travel to School and carpool with other families if possible.

The swimming carnivals over the last two days have been wonderful events for our students and community. The student behaviour has been excellent, and I want to thank our students and staff for promoting a positive culture of House Spirit, healthy competition, and fun throughout the events.

The Senior School carnival March Past was a highlight, with St Barnabas House channeling their inner Pokémon to reign supreme in 2024. Thank you to Mr Clucas, Mr Croft, and all the members of our staff who contributed to the success of the Swimming Carnivals.

Having such strong attendance from our parents for our start of year events has been pleasing. The Meet the Senior School Tutor night on Monday evening was very well attended, with Year 9 parents staying to hear about The Rite Journey program. This program forms an integral part of the Year 9 journey and forms a solid foundation for our students as they embark on their final few years at Lindisfarne as part of the Senior School and prepare for life beyond School. Likewise, seeing so many Stage 4 parents in attendance at the Meet the Homeroom Teacher evening on Tuesday was heartening.

We continue our introductions to our teaching groups next week when we hold our Stage 3 Meet the Teachers night on Tuesday, 13 February.

Meet the Preschool to Year 4 Teachers will be held on Friday afternoon, 16 February, prior to the whole school Principal's Welcome Event on Friday Evening from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm hosted at the Sunshine Avenue Campus.

The Principal’s Welcome Event is open to all Parents and Guardians and is a social event so our current families can meet and welcome new families, rekindle parent connections, and enjoy some hospitality to start the School year with some wonderful performances by our music students. The event is jointly hosted by the Lindisfarne Parents and Friends, who give so much service to our community and urge all Parents and Guardians to make time for this event. The details are listed below in this article.

School sports are underway, with advanced training and preparations for many sports. We will host our Rugby Season launch on Thursday, 15 February, at 6:30 pm, followed on Saturday by our Netball Season launch on Saturday, 17 February. I thank Joseph Coyne and Suzanne Evans for their leadership of these programs and the opportunities it affords our passionate Rugby and Netball players.

Our Scholarship applications for 2025 close this evening, and we already have a large number of applicants. Demand for places at Lindisfarne continues to be strong. I remind all parents that they must ensure they have any 2025 sibling enrolment applications lodged before 23 February 2024, when we will start planning interviews for available 2025 enrolment places. Sibling enrolment applications after this date will not be prioritised and be subject to our normal processes based upon the date of application.

Finally, as many of you know, I will be taking long-awaited Sabbatical leave from Wednesday, 22 May, to Monday, 26 August 2024. This will be only the second time that I have taken an extended break from School in my 40 years in education, and I am very much looking forward to this time of renewal. Charlotte Lush will be the Principal during my Sabbatical leave and assume full responsibility for all operations of the School during this time. Jeremy Godden will move to the position of Deputy Principal for the duration of my Sabbatical leave and is well-equipped to support Charlotte in the important work to be done. The Junior School will be led during this time with Laura Gallagher as Head of Junior School and Angela Mundy as Assistant Head of Junior School.

While it is still a number of months until I commence Sabbatical leave, I wanted to provide advanced notice of the leadership arrangements during my time away from school. I’m extremely confident that our School will be in very good hands during my Sabbatical Leave. I know that our Staff, Students, and School Community will fully support Charlotte Lush and the leadership team during my planned leave from school.

Enjoy the weekend ahead and a chance to regroup after what has been a very rewarding first few weeks of the School year for staff, students, and families.

It Takes a Village

Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Guardians,

It Takes A Village to Raise a Child

It’s been a joy to see our students settling back into their journey of learning, growth and development, and embracing all the opportunities offered by Lindisfarne education. It was particularly delightful to see many parents attend the “Meet The Tutor and Classroom Teachers’” evenings during the week. We can never underestimate the importance of the partnership between the parents and school in ‘drawing out’ from our young people their God-given talents and abilities. It really does take a village to raise a child, as the African proverb says. Let us continue to work together for the benefit of our young people.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Sales

Our School is celebrating Shrove Tuesday by selling pancakes at recess on Tuesday, 13 February 2024.

Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in many countries across the globe. It falls on the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent – a period of around six weeks leading up to Easter. During Lent, Christians give up luxuries to remember when Jesus went into the desert for 40 days to fast and pray. Traditionally during Lent, Christians give up rich, tasty foods such as butter, eggs, sugar and fat (some Christians continue to do so, in fact). Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to eat them – and what better way to do so than with some delicious pancakes!

All funds raised will go to the children and young people of the Middle East impacted by the war and to send pallets of stationary and other items to the poor in Nigeria.

Payment is via Parent Lounge -Events and Payments -Shrove Tuesday/Pancake Day 2024 Fundraiser.

For Our Prayers This Week

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:4-6).

Let us pray for peace in our world and in our hearts;
Let us pray for those who are sick in our community;
Let us pray for all young people who cannot afford to go to school or are deprived of life’s basic necessities;
Let us pray and work for justice, harmony, social friendship and fraternity;
Let us pray for the flourishing of our young people.
May we continue to be grateful for who we are and for what we have.

Chaplain

Sleep Ninja Challenge

Sleep Ninja Challenge

During Week 3 we present a fun and interactive Sleep Week Challenge for your family to share with your household via the Sleep Ninja app. This app was carefully developed by researchers from the Black Dog Institute to address alarming rates of significant sleep problems in young people, heightening the risk of anxiety and depression. By addressing good quality sleep, we are setting up the foundations to promote wellbeing and good academic performance now and into the future.

The App is based on Cognitive behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). Sleep Ninja teaches strategies across six interactive training sessions to develop healthy sleep habits and improve sleep quality. Using a personalised approach, the app will assist the user to tailor their routine to their needs. Users are encouraged to utilise their Sleep Ninja App regularly, but at a time outside of rest preparation.

We’re excited to introduce this excellent resource to our Lindisfarne Community and look forward to hearing from our students that they are reaping the benefits.

Study Tips

If your child says they do not have homework

Reviewing material on the same day it was learned helps reinforce memory retention.

Encourage your child to write down two to three things they did in each lesson or telling you three things they learnt today.

Students in their senior years should be doing this as part of their study routine and then highlighting areas they find challenging. This would be areas they would then need focus on during their study sessions or ask their teachers for additional help..

Incorporating this reflective practice into daily study routines can significantly enhance learning outcomes.

From the Head of Junior School

Welcome Madame Fleming!

This year we have welcomed our new Junior School French teacher, Mrs Helen Fleming. Madame Fleming has joined our school having most recently taught French at St.Kentigern Girls’ School in Auckland. Please read Madame Fleming’s letter of self-introduction below.

Bonjour,

I have had a great welcome by the Lindisfarne community in my first week at school making my transition into the school environment very easy.

I am passionate about sharing the language and culture of French speaking countries. As a language enthusiast, it is my goal to ignite the students’ interest and actively engage them in learning activities that facilitate language acquisition. To this end, I plan to implement various strategies to make the learning experience both enjoyable and educational. This may include a variety of tasks in the classroom, interactive language games, and cultural research and presentations.

I am committed to fostering an environment where student’s feel motivated and inspired to embrace the French Language.

I look forward to updating you and sharing your child’s learning journey.

Madame Fleming

What a great way to end our second great week at the Junior School! Murwillumbah Pool was a sea of colour as we held our 2024 Junior/Middle Swimming Carnival. A huge thanks to the Sports staff, grounds crew and all those who helped to make the carnival a success.

Next week (monday) we will be formally inducting our Year 4 students as Junior School Leaders. It was a privilege today to address the cohort and discuss the virtues of leadership and opportunities lying ahead of our young leaders. Our Term 1 elected leaders will also be presented with their badges on Monday as they embark on this first step in their leadership journeys.

Thank you to our wonderful Junior School parents for your support this week through the Telstra internet outage. Your patience and understanding has been truly appreciated. Our teachers did a great job of keeping their programs running with tech-free teaching and were an amazing support throughout the week. I want to give a very special mention to our wonderful office staff, Cindy and Kazanne, whose flexibility and patience were exemplary! Thank you!

As we all settle into the routines of the year, I encourage parents to consider using the walking school bus and parking options at Arkinstall Park. A gentle reminder that parking in Sullivan St is off limits for pick up and dropoff due to Tweed Council regulations and conditions. Thank you for your adherence to this rule.

We are very excited to be launching our Heroes of Discovery Program next week after our very positive staff introduction session this week. We look forward to meeting Responsible Rami next week and the rest of the gang over the coming months.

Junior and Middle Swimming Carnival

The Junior and Middle School Swimming carnival was a testament to the spirit of competition and camaraderie that thrives within Lindisfarne. From the onset, it was clear that the day would be one of excitement and high spirits, as students, adorned in their House colours, readied themselves for their races. The level of competition was high, reflecting the commitment and training many of our students have dedicated themselves to.

The presence of a significant number of parents and family members added a sense of community and support to the atmosphere. Their enthusiastic participation from the sidelines greatly enhanced the event, providing encouragement and boosting the spirits of all competitors. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to making the Junior and Middle School Swimming Carnival a truly memorable and successful day.

Stage 3 Meet the Homeroom Teacher Evening

We will be holding our Meet the Homeroom Teacher evening next Tuesday. This is an important event and one we recommend all Middle School parents of Years 5 and 6 students attend. As well as meeting key staff, parents will also get an overview of the Middle School structure for Years 5 and 6 students. The Assistant Head of Middle School will share some important information about some of our key programs for 2024 and the Dean of Students will speak in detail about the Stage 4 Pastoral experience at Lindisfarne. This evening also presents a great opportunity for parents to meet other families in the same homeroom group and to come together as a community.

Venue: Chapel

Student Representative Council (SRC)

A reminder that the Middle School SRC elections will be coming up soon. If your child is interested in this important role, please encourage them to talk further with their Homeroom teacher, Year Level Coordinator or the Assistant Head of Middle School, Ms Tania Gallen.

Students will undertake elections in their Homerooms each term, to identify 2 people who are committed to working cooperatively with others to improve the lives of our School community. Students will need to attend SRC meetings, share ideas, and be a person others can rely upon. The Middle School prefects, Amy Cronk and Jay Cahill will be key members of this group and will support our Middle School students in running this student-led group.

Principal’s Welcome

We are excited to extend a warm invitation to the entire Lindisfarne community for the Principal's Welcome event, to be held at the Sunshine Avenue Early Learning Centre on Friday evening, 16 February 2024. The evening will be further enhanced by the musical talents of our students, whose performances are sure to delight and entertain all present.

Principal Stuart Marquardt will grace us with a short address, sharing the Lindisfarne vision for 2024 and beyond. This event serves as a perfect occasion to welcome new families into our fold and to strengthen bonds with those we already know well.

This evening offers a chance to connect with each of you, celebrating our shared commitment to the flourishing Lindisfarne community.

Well done Year 6!

On the top level of O-Block, a wave of energy and enthusiasm has swept through, as our Year 6 students seamlessly transition into their new academic year. Over the past two weeks, these young leaders have showcased remarkable resilience as they embark on their Year 6 journey.

From the get-go, it's evident that Year 6 is embracing the new year with eagerness, wanting to lead their new Year 5 friends by example. Whether it's lending a helping hand or sharing a smile, their leadership qualities shine brightly.

Year 6 has also been actively engaged in sustainability initiatives, taking what we are learning in the classroom and out into our campus gardens. Led by our amazing Mrs. Foyster, students have eagerly taken to our garden, learning about the importance of sustainability and reducing food waste.

Getting to know their homeroom teachers and meeting their specialist instructors has been a highlight for our Year 6 students. The rapport and connections formed with their educators serve as the foundation for a successful year ahead.

As we witness their growth and development, we're reminded of the immense potential within each one of our students.. There's no doubt that Year 6 will continue to flourish and leave a lasting impact on our school community.

Here's to a year filled with growth, learning, and endless possibilities for our incredible Year 6 students.

French Fashion Show

Bonjour tout le monde !

In Year 6 French we are excited about our new unit focused on fashion! We are reaching out to our wonderful parent community for support.

To make this unit truly engaging, we are planning a unique fashion project that will allow students to express their creativity while practising their French language skills. In order to bring this project to life, we are seeking donations of used or new clothing items that students can use to create their own fashion label and present a runway show. All sizes and styles are welcome, as diversity in clothing options will enrich the learning experience for our students. Simply drop off your items at the school office, LOTE staffroom, or send them in with your students for French.

Your generosity will play a crucial role in making this fashion unit a memorable and educational experience. We appreciate your support in fostering a creative and immersive learning environment.

Merci beaucoup,

Madame Weterkamp

Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

Yesterday, our school community came together to celebrate one of the most anticipated events of the year, the Senior School Swimming Carnival. The day kicked off with the vibrant march past, a tradition that always injects excitement and school spirit into the carnival. A special congratulations to St Barnabas House for capturing the victory in this component of the day.

As we eagerly await the results of the swimming events, speculation abounds. Will St Margaret House, our reigning champions, secure the silverware once again in 2024? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the competition is fierce, and the spirit of competition is alive and well.

However, the day also highlighted an area for growth within our school community. It is essential that we work together with our families to underscore the importance of attendance on such significant days. The Senior School Swimming Carnival, like many of our school events, is not just about competition; it is a vital opportunity for building and consolidating our school culture. Whilst we recognise that not every student will participate in swimming events, supporting one's House and peers is invaluable. These events are not opportunities to stay home but to come together, showing support and school spirit.

Looking ahead, I am thrilled to announce my attendance at ArtExpress in Sydney this weekend alongside the Director of Creative Industries, Mrs Jane Brennan This year, we are particularly proud as 2023 Aluma Jacinta Kieffer’s HSC artworks have been selected for exhibition at Hazlehurst Arts Centre. The creative arts are a cornerstone of Lindisfarne’s identity, flourishing under the dedication of our talented students and staff. Supporting Jacinta at this significant event is not only a privilege but a testimony to the exceptional talent within our community.

Next week, the Senior School will observe Ash Wednesday with a special service in Ngahriyah, starting at 11.50. This marks the beginning of Lent, a period of reflection, repentance, and preparation for Easter. Parents and family members are warmly invited to join us in this meaningful service.

In closing, I wish to reiterate a message I shared in this week's assembly: Start as we mean to go on. This adage is a guiding principle for us as we embark on another school year filled with endless possibilities. Our school is a place of opportunity, and I encourage every student to seize every chance to grow, contribute, and excel.

Sports Excellence

The Sports Excellence Scholarship Fund

The Sports Excellence Scholarship Fund is a national charity that invests in Australia’s young athletes by providing financial scholarships of $1000. This scholarship is available for any student aged 10 - 18 years of age, who attends an Australian school, and whose financial circumstances would preclude them from otherwise participating at representative level for their state or Australia.

We would highly recommend applying for any Lindisfarne student that meets these criteria, and further details can be found HERE.

Equestrian

Spotlight on Zali Greeney

2024 has started with a blast for one of our Interschool Dressage riders, Zali Greeney (Year 10). In scorching temperatures over the weekend, Zali and her horse Jag Classique competed at the Queensland Equestrian Centre in Caboolture. This was a CDI level competition. CDI stands for Concours de Dressage International (International Dressage Event) and is recognised by the world governing body of equestrian events, the Féderation Equestre Internationale.

The pair gained important qualifications that now enable them to compete in one of Australia's most prestigious events-Dressage by the Sea, later this month. This is an open competition attracting the best dressage riders from around the country and is held at the most exclusive venue, Willinga Park, an award-winning, multi discipline equestrian centre on NSW’s South Coast.

Now that Zali is competing at FEI level dressage as a junior athlete, she has progressed to wearing ‘tails’, as seen on Olympic dressage riders. Quite an accomplishment for someone so young! Join us in wishing Zali and Jag all the best for their upcoming Dressage by the Sea event!

OTHER ITEMS

Age Grade Dispensations

This is a quick note on age grade dispensations for our school rugby program and more information on this age grade dispensation process from Rugby Australia can be found HERE.

There are two reasons for age grade dispensation within our school program:

  • Playing up an age grade.
    • This will apply to all our U16 players who are in our 1st XV and 2nd XV squads. If you or your child were 15 years old on the 1st January 2023, we need you to complete a Rugby AU age grade dispensation form (link HERE) to continue playing for our 1st or 2nd XV.

  • Playing down an age grade.
    • This will apply to any students who have moved up an age grade and whose stature would be better suited to remaining in a younger age grade. For example, a player who turned 13 in December 2022 but is very small for their age could continue to play in the U13 grade in 2023 with dispensation.

We will have an assessing coach from NSW Rugby come into the school on Thursday 15th February at 1200 (during integrated school sport) to determine our students suitability to play up or down an age grade.

If you would like to play up or down an age grade and parents/guardians are agreeable to this, please sign and return the form in this link HERE ASAP so we can flag this with the NSW Rugby assessing coach.

If you have any questions about the process or suitability of age grade dispensation, please let us know as we are more than happy to chat through this process and make sure all our students have positive experiences in this great game.

Car-Pooling and Volunteer Work

With a number of students living some distance from Lindisfarne and given the nature of the program (e.g., Monday after school training in 2024, evening pick-ups after games), we would like to make getting the students to and from training/games as efficient as possible for you all.

With a school like ours, one of the best options for this is car-pooling with families from nearby suburbs. So if you are interested in car-pooling with other families for rugby training/games, can you please fill out this form HERE.

Another item that we need assistance with as we grow our program is some light volunteer work (e.g., supervising a BBQ) at home games. If you are able to assist in any way at home games, can you please fill out the same form HERE.

We will share the contact details of other parents/students that have registered for car-pooling late next week so please complete this form ASAP if interested.

Monday After School Training

In 2024, our main training session outside of school time is on Monday after school from 1530-1645. Although we had great numbers to our first training session this week, rugby union is a team sport and we still need as many of our players to be in attendance week in and week out to grow the Lindisfarne rugby program. Hopefully, the car-pooling details will help this and if we can be of assistance in any way, please let me know.

Community and Family Studies

Community and Family Studies arrives at Lindisfarne.

The PDHPE faculty is pleased to share that our Year 11 students have begun studying Community and Family Studies ( CAFS). This is the first time Lindisfarne has offered this ATAR subject on campus which shares some common themes with Stage 6 PDHPE. We had an overwhelming response to CAFS with 42 students undertaking the course. The Preliminary course focuses on the individual and their interactions with personal groups, family and community. The HSC course builds upon this by examining how the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities is affected by broader societal influences including sociocultural, economic and political factors.

Community and Family Studies can have a direct and positive influence on the quality of students’ lives both now and in the future. During the school years, students are confronted with an awareness of their emerging identity as young women and young men. Community and Family Studies investigates the unique contributions of individuals, groups, families and communities in the development of effective social structures.

Ms McDowell and Ms Matthews have been very impressed with the engagement and interest of all students and look forward to sharing this new journey with them.

Science Opportunities - Term 1

Science Opportunities - Term 1

The year has only just begun and already students have been making the most of opportunities in Science at our school and beyond.

Over the break, two Year 12 students, Mia Wilkinson and Desiree Mahleka were fortunate to travel to UNSW in Sydney to take part in the SciX Summer School to further their research projects for Science Extension. The experience was invaluable for them both and we look forward to them presenting their findings as part of their major works.

The World Science Festival is being celebrated in Brisbane between 15-24 March and there are many events that I would highly recommend families attending. The full program is available here: https://www.worldsciencefestival.coms.au/2024-event-program

From interactive workshops to talks from notable scientists such as Dr Karl and Brian Greene, there are many activities on offer for families to enjoy. We will also be looking to organise a school trip in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out in the next Newsletter.

The Science team are looking to expand our offerings of these experiences throughout the year and will also be gearing up to our inaugural Science Fair in Term 3, so if you are keen to be involved in any of these, please do not hesitate to contact me.

International Student Homestay - Expression of Interest

Dear School Families,

As many of you are aware, our school prides itself on its global focus and commitment to international understanding. We are thrilled to extend an opportunity for you to be a part of this enriching experience.

In the past, we have communicated about our paid homestay program, via StudyMatch, for long-term international student enrolments. Today, we are excited to present a new facet of this initiative: hosting study tour groups from our partner schools and organisations across the globe. This is a voluntary hosting opportunity, allowing you to open your homes and hearts to the vibrant cultures of the world.

We are currently preparing for upcoming visits from partner schools in India (April/May) and Japan (July/Aug). These short-term stays are a wonderful chance for our students and your families to engage in a rich cultural exchange, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives.

This inaugural visit from Pallikoodam School to Lindisfarne is more than just a regular exchange program; it is the first step towards a long-lasting and meaningful relationship between our two schools. We are honoured to welcome our new friends and provide them with a memorable experience in Australia. In a wonderful reciprocal gesture, Lindisfarne students have been invited to visit Pallikoodam School in Kerala, India, this coming September/October. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in the rich culture and traditions of India. Detailed information about this trip will be provided in the coming weeks, including itinerary, costs, and preparation guidance. To honour the families contributing to this international friendship, priority placement for the trip to India will be given to those students who have hosted a student from Pallikoodam School.

In 2018, Lindisfarne hosted students from Hokkaido, Japan as part of a study tour organised by the volunteer organisation, Hokkaido Australia Society. Students selected for the visit received scholarships to attend. This is a wonderful way for us to support students who would not normally have the opportunity to experience Australian culture. We are excited to have been asked to host again this year and look forward to welcoming approximately 20 high school students in late July.

If you are interested in welcoming a student (or two) into your home for either of these visits, or others in the future, please complete the 2024 International Student Homestay Expression of Interest Form.

Why Volunteer to Host?

  • Cultural Exchange: Hosting international students offers a unique opportunity to learn about different cultures, traditions, and languages right in your own home.

  • Lasting Friendships: Many host families and students form bonds that last a lifetime, creating international friendships and connections.

  • Educational Experience: This experience is not only educational for the visiting students but also for your own family, providing a broader worldview and appreciation of global diversity.

What Does Hosting Involve?

  • Welcoming a Student: You will provide a welcoming, safe, and nurturing home environment for the student.

  • Sharing Daily Life: Include the student in your family’s daily routines and activities, helping them to experience life in Australia authentically.

  • Support and Encouragement: Offer support as they explore our school and region, encouraging them to share their culture with us.

Duration of Stay: The students’ visits are short-term, typically ranging from a few days to a couple of weeks.

Support from Our School: Our team will provide all necessary support and guidance to ensure a comfortable and rewarding experience for both your family and the visiting students.

We warmly invite you to consider participating in this enriching program. Whether you have hosted before or are new to this experience, your involvement will have a significant impact on these young minds and our community.
