Foreword

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Reflecting on the past week, I am reminded of the diverse and enriching experiences that make our school community so vibrant and unique. It has been a week filled with significant achievements, valuable learning opportunities, and meaningful celebrations.

The P and F Trivia Night that took place last Saturday was a tremendous success, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of our community members. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Community Engagement team, Mrs. Charlotte Lush, our Deputy Principal, our Year 12 student leaders and the vice president of the P&F Association Steve Cornell for their exceptional organisational skills.

This week, we embraced Harmony Week's values, centering on the theme "Everyone Belongs." It was heartening to witness our school community unite by wearing orange, symbolizing our collective stand against discrimination and our celebration of diversity. This initiative underscored the importance of inclusivity and respect within our school and the broader community.

I had the honour of attending the seventh Lindisfarne Business Network Breakfast featuring guest speaker Professor Alan Patching from Bond University. His insights into human behaviour and strategies for managing stress in the workplace were invaluable. These gatherings are crucial for fostering professional growth and networking within and beyond our School community.

We bid farewell to our esteemed guests from Aoyama Gakuin University Japan, marking the end of a fruitful cross-cultural exchange. This program has significantly enriched our school's cultural landscape, and I extend my deepest gratitude to our staff and to the host families for their generosity and support.

Our Principal’s Tours this past week have highlighted the growing interest in Lindisfarne, reinforcing the desirability of our educational offerings. As we look to the future, I encourage prospective families to prioritise early enrolment, given the increasing demand for places at our school.

We recognized and celebrated National Close the Gap Day on Thursday, 21 March, an important occasion to reflect on our collective responsibility to contribute to achieving health equality for Indigenous Australians. Through various activities and discussions, our students gained deeper insights into the significance of this day and the ongoing efforts required to close the health and life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

The inaugural Border Schools Cross Country Championships showcased not only the athletic talents of participants from around the region but also the spirit of fair play and determination. Hosting this event on our Mahers Lane campus was a proud moment, reflecting our commitment to promoting healthy competition between our Border Schools.

I felt immense pride as I travelled to Sunshine Coast Grammar School today to observe and support our Rugby Union teams. I spent 11 years at Sunshine Coast Grammar School and it was wonderful to be able to observe our teams in action against one of the premier co-educational schools of Queensland.

Finally a reminder that this Sunday members of the Lindisfarne School Community are joining St Cuthbert’s Anglican parish Tweed Heads for Palm Sunday service at 9:00 am. All are welcome.

As we move towards the final few weeks of our first term, let us continue to support each other in fostering an environment of learning, respect, and achievement. I am grateful for your ongoing commitment to our school and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead in 2024.

Wishing you a pleasant and restful weekend.

Chaplaincy

Chaplain's Column

Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Guardians,

Godly Play with Kindergarten Students

It was a joy to spend time with our Kindergarten students exploring Jesus’ life and story. In the life of Jesus we experience not only how much God loves us, but also the model and example of true humanity. Jesus does not take anything away from us, rather he gives us everything that makes life wonderful, true, beautiful, great, amazing and joyful.

Palm Sunday at St Cuthbert’s Tweed Heads on Sunday, 24 March 2024 at 9am

You are also cordially invited to join us on Sunday at St Cuthbert's, Tweed Heads at 9am, for the Palm Sunday Service as we begin Holy Week, the most important week in the Christian calendar, when we remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who gave his life for our salvation.

Harmony Week Celebrations

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who supported our Harmony Week festivities, a time when we celebrated the rich tapestry of diversity within our school community. Let's remain committed to fostering harmony through both our words and deeds, striving to create a more unified and inclusive Australian society. Our aim is to nurture an environment where every person feels seen, cherished, respected, and embraced, regardless of their cultural, racial, gender, sexual orientation, or religious affiliations.

Ramadan Kareen and Ramadan Mubarak

We wish our Muslim brothers and sisters a generous, blessed and happy Ramadan. May it be a time of blessing, spiritual growth, peace, joy and abundance.

A Prayer Invite

“Pray always”, Jesus said, and “never lose heart” (Luke 18:1). The state of affairs in our world and personal lives can sometimes cause us to lose heart, but Jesus gives us an antidote to worry, anxiety, sadness, dreariness, and hopelessness: prayer. Prayer brings joy; it quells anger, dispels anxiety, gives strength and hope, as well as restores inner peace. Prayer is life for the way we pray is the way we live. Please join us on Wednesday (27.03; 03.04) at 8.15pm via Zoom link for a time of prayer and spiritual renewal. All are welcome -whether you have prayed before or not.

Please send your prayer requests to this confidential email: prayers@lindisfarne.nsw.edu.au

May we continue to be grateful for who we are and for what we have.

The Reverend Constantine Osuchukwu
Chaplain

Origami Harmony

Origami Harmony

In a delightful cultural exchange that brought a piece of Japan to our school, the Library and Mrs Godden hosted daily origami workshops throughout Harmony Week, facilitated by enthusiastic students from Aoyama Gakuin. These workshops provided a unique opportunity for participants of all ages to delve into the art of paper folding.

Origami, the Japanese tradition of folding paper into beautiful shapes and figures, transcended its status as merely an art form during these sessions. It became a gateway to understanding patience, precision, and peace. The workshops aimed to celebrate cultural diversity and foster a sense of unity through the shared experience of creating something beautiful by hand. Not only did the sessions teach origami techniques, but they also imparted lessons in mindfulness and creativity, marking them as a memorable highlight of Harmony Week’s celebrations.

Harmony Week Taiko Drumming

During Harmony Week, we were delighted to host the Byron Taiko Group, showcasing the traditional Japanese art of Taiko drumming. Known for its dynamic blend of rhythm, movement, and spirit, Taiko drumming has been an integral part of Japanese culture for centuries, embodying community strength and harmony.

The Byron Taiko drummers enlivened us with their powerful performances and provided immersive workshops, giving our students and staff a hands-on experience with this captivating art form. This unique opportunity allowed participants to delve into the world of Taiko, appreciating its cultural depth and the discipline it requires.

Harmony Week, a celebration of cultural diversity and unity, was perfectly encapsulated by this event. Through the universal language of music, we connected, learned, and appreciated a tradition that was a new discovery for many.

We embraced the powerful beats and rhythms of Taiko, celebrating our community's rich cultural diversity and promoting peace and understanding. The Byron Taiko Group's visit was a testament to the beauty of cultural exchange and the unifying power of music.

Bush Preschool

Last week the Bush Preschool groups were out in the community lending a helping hand and learning about the natural environment first hand. We met some lovely volunteers from Fingal Coast Care who showed us all the different wild flowers and grasses which live on the headland. The children then got busy collecting the fluffy paper daisy seeds from the flower heads for the regeneration project at Fingal Headland-Booningbah. We learnt about how the old lighthouse keepers' goats ate all the vegetation on the headland causing weed growth and erosion. So what can we do?.... "We can rebuild it!"

We took our seeds back to the nursery where the kind volunteers had prepared some seedling trays for us to carefully sow them into. We will head back to the nursery in Term 4 to see how much they have grown!

A BIG thank you to Mrs Sarah, Mrs Kay, Mrs Kate and Mr K from Fingal Coast Care for volunteering your time and giving us the capacity to Care for Country in such a meaningful way.

If any of the school community would like to get involved in local Coast Care projects please contact me on michelle.donohue@lindisfarne.nsw.edu.au

Harmony Week Celebrations

Our school came alive during Harmony Week under the theme "Everyone Belongs," showcasing a week of activities that celebrated cultural diversity and promoted inclusivity. Highlights included Traditional Japanese Taiko drumming, an International Film Festival, origami workshops, and the skilful arts of basket weaving and boomerang throwing.

The much-loved photo booth captured the spirit of the week, while karaoke sessions brought much fun and laughter. The crafting of friendship bracelets, run by our School Prefects, symbolised our interconnectedness, reinforcing the week's message that our diversity is our strength. Harmony Week was a vivid reminder that our school is a place where every culture is celebrated and every individual is valued.

St Cuthbert’s in Tweed Heads has extended a warm invitation to all within our community to join the Palm Sunday Service on Sunday at 9:00am. Many Lindisfarne staff, students and families will worship together on this day. It would be wonderful to see as many families attend as possible.

Senior School

Head of Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

This week, I've been reflecting on the heart of our Senior School’s educational philosophy. It’s more than just a commitment to academic excellence and the well-rounded development of our students - it's about creating a nurturing, safe, and respectful environment where every student can thrive.

In the Senior School, we take pride in the strong foundation we’ve built, celebrating our dedication to fostering a space where growth and learning go hand in hand. But our dreams for our students extend beyond just academic achievements. We’re here to challenge them, to support them in overcoming hurdles, and to prepare them for whatever the future holds, be it further studies or diving straight into their professional lives.

Self-discipline, a cornerstone of future success, starts with something as simple as how one presents themselves. These standards are integral to our educational philosophy, and clearly communicated as each family is invited to join our community.

During a recent event attended at one of Sydney’s independent girls' schools on the Lower North Shore, I made an observation that resonated deeply with me. Whilst having a coffee on Miller Street, I observed scores of students not only from the host school but also from the boys' school nearby, a Catholic school down the road, and a local government school. Regardless of their school’s ethos, each student demonstrated an impressive level of self-discipline and pride. Their uniforms, behaviour, and overall demeanour spoke volumes of the values instilled in them.

This observation served as a powerful reminder that while we hold strong values and high expectations, we always have room to aim higher to ensure our standards not only meet but surpass what I observed in these schools.

What We Expect From Our Students:

  • Girls are required to wear skirts that are no shorter than on the knee, without alterations such as hemming or rolling at the waistband. Makeup, false eyelashes, false nails, and painted nails are not permitted, while earrings should be plain, simple studs. Furthermore, girls' hair is to be tied up at all times.

  • Boys are expected to adhere to specific haircuts as outlined in the Parent and Student Guide, maintain a clean-shaven appearance, keep shirts tucked in, and wear belts.

I understand that our values and expectations may not align perfectly with those of every family. However, these principles form part of the foundation upon which our school stands and we will continue to hold our students to these high standards. It is through high standards that we can most effectively nurture our students' growth - personally and academically.

Needless to say, we’re also dedicated to cultivating an environment that encourages our students to express their individuality through critical thinking and acting with empathy and social awareness, readying them for a life dedicated to making a difference.

We’re in this together, and your support at home is invaluable. Together, we can reinforce these values, ensuring our students not only meet but exceed these standards, becoming disciplined, well-rounded individuals poised to tackle the future with confidence.

Careers and VET

Careers and VET

This week, Year 12 students were visited by American Summers, an organisation that provides gap year experiences in the US where students spend 9 weeks from June - August working and living at one of over 700 American Summer camps. These paid opportunities include support with visas and sponsorship as well on finding an employer and support once on the ground. Students were told about the variety of experiences and opportunities available through these programs. Our own Mr Ryan Murphy was also able to share his experience of living and working in the US while a uni student and doing a ski season, which turned into a period of living in the US. The students had their eyes opened to a new experience and will also have other providers of gap year programs to engage with throughout the year. Any students or parents interested in more information are encouraged to contact Courtney Hassall - courtney.hassall@iena.org. Programs include activities such as arts, dance, golf, horse riding, lifeguarding, sailing, soccer, tennis and woodwork.

Southern Cross University have made some exciting announcements about upcoming additions to the courses they offer:

  • Bachelor of Physiotherapy - from 2025 and offered from the Coffs Harbour campus. Starting with the Bachelor degree and looking to add post graduate study for professional accreditation.

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Technology - from 2025 offered at the Lismore campus. Includes nursing, pathology, medical testing, biomedical studies.

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine - from 2026 offered at the Lismore campus. This will be the pathway to become a Veterinarian and is the 8th university in the country to offer the qualification.

  • Diploma of Conveyancing - one year full time and is currently being offered and provides licensing for Conveyancers Licensing. It is a huge growth area for employment and is a great option for students looking to gain professional employment but not necessarily do a more traditional university degree.

Please speak to Mrs Ward for more information.

All budding entrepreneurs are encouraged to join the BEE faculty Lunch Lab on Tuesdays Week A Lunch in MM2. This is an opportunity to ideate, share challenges, brainstorm problem solving and receive mentorship for business ideas.

Pastoral Care

SEQTA Pastoral Notes - Update

SEQTA Pastoral Notes - Update

I'm delighted to share with you the positive strides our students have made recently. Between Wednesday 13th of March and Wednesday 20th March, we've celebrated 217 commendations through our Pastoral Care Notes system on SEQTA.

These commendations reflect the outstanding behaviours, academic successes, and embodiment of Lindisfarne values such as Compassion, Wisdom, and Respect.

These achievements highlight the importance of positive reinforcement in encouraging our students to excel and adhere to the values we value. We believe it's crucial for you, as parents, to be part of this celebration, recognising the efforts and successes of your children.

We also understand that some students might receive Pastoral Notes regarding 'behavioural concerns.' It's important to view these notes not as criticisms but as opportunities for growth and learning. Together, we can support these students in understanding the impact of their actions and guide them towards making positive choices. Engaging in open conversations about these notes at home can reinforce the idea that challenges are stepping stones to improvement.

Your support is invaluable in our shared mission to nurture well-rounded, respectful, and compassionate individuals. Thank you for your continued support of the school.

Director of Digital and Emerging Technologies.

Mr Dunn is a former senior representative player from NZ for Otago and Nelson Bays and has high level experience in the 7 a-side game as both a player and coach. Mr Marais also has a wide range of experience with 7s and was an integral part of our girls 7s program last year. Lastly, Miss Smith is our former Lindisfarne Girls Rugby 7s captain and schoolgirl representative player.

    RECENT GAMES

    ALL SAINTS U12 XV 20-0

It was a fantastic first hit out for our U12 squad against All Saints last Thursday. It was two evenly matched teams going all out in both defence and attack. Liindisfarne got the upper hand through some excellent teamwork, particularly at the breakdown creating some good space out wide for our wingers. Sustained pressure on attack led to some nice tries from Crusoe, Harry, Charlie and Hunter. Tackling from our squad was fantastic, showing real heart and determination. All Saints were a fantastic team to play against and the sportsmanship displayed during and after the game was first class.

    Monday After School Training

In 2024, our main training session outside of school time is on Monday after school from 1530-1645. Although we had great numbers to our first training sessions, rugby union is a team sport and we still need as many of our players to be in attendance week in and week out to grow the Lindisfarne rugby program. Hopefully, the car-pooling details will help this and if we can be of assistance in any way, please let us know.

Also, please note we will NOT be sending reminders for these training sessions (all players and families should assume our Monday afternoon training will ALWAYS BE ON), however we will let you all know in ample time if we need to cancel a session due to weather or other factors.

    Training Attire

Students should also be in proper training attire (NOT school sports uniform) with mouthguard, boots and any other equipment they play with for every training session, including school sport. This requirement also includes integrated school sport on Thursday i.e., students should wear our rugby training top or similar and not the school sport polo at this time. Alongside this, students should have a towel and spare school uniform to change into in case there is wet weather.

    Stack Team APP

The Stack Team app will be our Rugby Union program’s main form of communication for all our squads, with exception of U12 boys.

As a reminder, both parents and Boy’s U13, U15, 1st XVs and 7’s and Girl’s 7s students who have parental permission for smartphones will need to download the app and join the Lindisfarne Rugby Program in the app.

To download the Stack team app, use the following links:

    ● Android: https://www.teamapp.com/androi...

Once downloaded, please search for 'Lindisfarne Rugby Program' and request to join.

    Classroom Snapshot: 7G

    Classroom Snapshot: 7G

There is nothing 7G enjoys more than a good old fashion debate. As we are reaching the tail end of our Year 7 novel study of Two Wolves, we decided to put those debating skills to use to discuss some of the characters in the novel and their motives.

Some of the questions debated included “Is Ray SIlver a bad person?” and “Did Ben Silver always do the right thing in the novel?”. This led to some incredibly insightful discussions about what it means to be a good person, and whether or not noble motives can excuse destructive or even illegal actions. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to reflect on what books and stories can teach us about the real world and the complexities of being human.

Some of our standout speakers were Ari, Oliver C, Tex, Jonothan and Coco, who did an outstanding job using logical and emotional appeals to sway their peers. These students are more than ready to start their next unit on persuasive speaking.

Congratulations to both the Intermediate B team and the Open A team for their outstanding wins this week!

The Intermediate B team is coached by Mr Hall, and consists of Django, Ava, Elizabeth and Tahlia. These students argued the negative side of the topic: The existence of zoos is justified. The teamwork, persistence, preparation and skill paid off- great work Intermediate B!

The Open A team is coached by Mrs Treacy and Ms Brewer, and consists of Olivia, Ella, Mia, Xan and Lexi. While Lexi was unable to be present for this one, all members of the team have been working together for weeks to hone their skills and strategise how best to approach the high stakes situation of short prep debating. The team argued the affirmative side of the topic: Airlines should be financially responsible for delays, cancellations and refusals of boarding. Excellent work by all team members on their outstanding efforts working together to bring home the victory.

A Warm Welcome to Narbari Seihou High School!

Last Friday, we were thrilled to host students and staff from Narbari Seihou High School, marking a significant step in rekindling our sister school relationship post-COVID. The day was filled with cultural exchange; International Prefects Connor Otto and Jess Wilson, along with our student buddies, welcomed our guests to the school. The visitors not only joined our lessons and assisted with 'workshopping' Year 7 Japanese student assessments but also captivated us with presentations on Japanese culture.

The AFL skills session with Mr. Gilliland was a highlight, showcasing the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship. Additionally, Narbari Seihou’s staff, Mr Akiyoshi (Yoshi) Mukaiyama and Ms Yuki Itoh, were warmly welcomed by both staff and students. They thoroughly enjoyed participating in various classes, including technology and language lessons, sharing insights and forging connections.

This visit has invigorated our partnership with Narbari Seihou, reminding us of the rich experiences and understanding that come from such international friendships. We look forward to more collaborative and enlightening exchanges in the future.

How Are Your Recycling Hub Items Recycled? Batteries?

Have you ever wondered where the items that you drop off at our recycling hubs go next? Household batteries are one of the most popular items dropped off at our recycling hubs. To date, we have recycled over 11,500 batteries. But where do they actually go?

Batteries cannot be placed in your kerbside recycling or landfill bins due to safety reasons. When batteries are placed in kerbside bins they become a fire hazard. Batteries easily spark fires as move and hit up against items while the bin is being collected or the rubbish is being transported in the rubbish truck. There have been many cases of rubbish trucks catching on fire all around Australia from this. Batteries also cannot be processed by most recycling facilities and can also leak battery acid into the surrounding environment when sent to landfill.

All of the batteries that are collected through the recycling hub are forwarded to B-cycle. B-cycle is Australia's largest battery recycling program. When they are at B-cycle they can be appropriately recycled as valuable materials are extracted from the battery. This helps to reduce the amount of batteries going to landfill and the demand for mining the minerals in batteries. To get a behind-the-scenes look at a battery recycling facility check out the included video.

So, make sure to recycle your dead and used batteries at our recycling hubs to give them a new life. Our recycling hubs are located near student admin at our Mahers Lane campus and in the assembly area at the Junior School.

    Harmony Week in our Library

    Harmony Week @our Library

“Everybody belongs”. We have had a wonderful week in the Library celebrating Harmony Week. Painting our collaborative art piece, learning origami with our new friends from Aoyama Gakuin University, working on a jigsaw together, discovering each other’s ‘country of origin’ on our world map and remembering we all belong regardless of where we are from.
