Foreword

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This past Sunday, our school community gathered at our founding parish, St Cuthbert's Anglican Church in Tweed Heads, for a combined service to celebrate Palm Sunday. The Junior School Choir's voices beautifully enhanced the Service, leaving all who attended deeply moved. My heartfelt thanks to the staff, parents, and students for joining us as we entered Holy Week with open hearts.

It was a joyful morning on Wednesday as students in our Junior School celebrated with the Easter Hat Parade. This much-loved tradition for our community is always a personal highlight of the year for me. Witnessing our Preschool and Kindergarten students proudly showcasing their incredible Easter hat creations, and being able to share that with families really showcased the sense of community for which we are so well known.

Likewise our annual Easter services across both campuses were a time for students, staff, and families to reflect on the deeper meaning of Easter. A special thank you to Year 4 S who so beautifully shared the Easter Story at both services and to The Reverend Constantine Osuchuwku and all who played a part in our Easter services.

For those interested in attending local Anglican Parish Easter services, please refer below to the details provided in the Chaplain’s article.

As a school, we are delighted to announce that in late 2023, Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School was invited to participate in Network 8 of the AISNSW Indigenous Education Waratah Project. As many of you would know, I am deeply passionate and committed to successful educational outcomes for our First Nations students and embedding First Nations culture into the School. Being part of this Project is crucial to the success of that goal.

We each have a responsibility to help ‘close the gap’ in educational outcomes and the completion rate through to Year 12 for First Nations students. This project will help us to contribute to this important National priority. You can find more details in the article below.

Tech rehearsals for "MAMMA MIA" have been in full swing this week and the final rehearsals will be held next week before opening night on Wednesday, 3 April. I want to commend the dedication of the students and staff as they have juggled rehearsals in school time, after school and on weekends, whilst maintaining their regular assessments, studies and work commitments. I have no doubt the show will match the commitment of our cast and crew. All involved deserve every accolade that will come from this incredible production as the sacrifice of rehearsal gives over to the joy of performance.

I look forward to seeing the many members of our school community at Mamma Mia next week.

Looking ahead, we will observe ANZAC Day services on April 25, a solemn occasion to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who have served our nation. We invite our school community to gather together in remembrance. Further details will be provided before the end of term, but I urge families to mark this date down and attend your local Anzac Day commemorative services.

Wishing you all a wonderful, happy and safe Easter weekend with your families and hopefully some time to enjoy the sunshine and outdoors.

Waratah Project

Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School was invited to participate in Network 8 of the AISNSW Indigenous Education Waratah Project.

As part of the project, Lindisfarne has been nominated as the Hub school, which entails the responsibility of connecting four other schools in the network; Carinya Christian School Gunnedah, The Armidale School, Armidale, Clarence Valley Anglican College in Grafton, and Maitland Christian School, Maitland. The selection of schools for participation in the project is based on significant First Nations student enrolment numbers, reflecting the commitment we and our other Network schools have in supporting and embedding Indigenous perspectives and students into education.

The AISNSW Indigenous Education Waratah Project will span two years, covering 2024 and 2025. During this time, Lindisfarne will be implementing various initiatives aimed at supporting our First Nations students and families. The first initiative held in early 2024 was a Morning Tea for our local Bundjalung community. This important event gave us the opportunity and space to share details about the Waratah Project to our Traditional Owners and Elders and to have our Grade 11 Aboriginal Studies students present on the work they have been undertaking this year.

We extend our gratitude to all members of our community for your ongoing support as we embark on this journey. Your support is invaluable as we work towards embedding First Nations perspectives into the school for all our students. For those interested in learning more about the project, our lead for the project is Ms. Kara Way. She can be contacted through the usual school channels, and we encourage you to reach out to her for further details.

Thank you once again for your continued support and enthusiasm. Together, we look forward to making a positive difference in the lives of our First Nations students.

Chaplaincy

Chaplain's Corner

Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Guardians,

Palm Sunday at St Cuthbert’s Tweed Heads

It was such a joyful and inspiring occasion to gather at St Cuthbert’s last Sunday for the annual commemoration of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, otherwise known as Palm Sunday. With Palm Sunday celebrations we began Holy Week when the church follows the path of Jesus from Gethsemane to Golgotha and to the glory of the resurrection.

Thank you to all those who attended, particularly our Junior School choir and the strings ensemble ably supported by Mr Edwards and Ms van der Wallen respectively. Their musical renditions uplifted our Service and enhanced our worship of God. May the Lord reward you all as only he can.

Easter Services at Mahers Lane Chapel and Sunshine Avenue

Our Easter Services this year were brought to life by the simple reenactment of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection by the Class of 4S. Thank you to Mrs Shepherd and Mr Scott who prepared and supported the students in assisting us to keep alive the promise of Jesus that he would be with us until the end of time.

For Reflection: At the Cross by Geoffrey Birtill

When I look at the blood

All I see is love, love, love, love.

When I stop at the cross

I can see the love of God.

But I can’t see competition.

I can’t see hierarchy.

I can’t see pride or prejudice

Or abuse of authority.

I can’t see lust for power.

I can’t see manipulation.

I can’t see rage or anger

Or selfish ambition.

I can’t see unforgiveness.

I can’t see hate or envy.

I can’t see stupid fighting

Or bitterness, or jealousy.

I can’t see empire building.

I can’t see self-importance.

I can’t see back-stabbing

Or vanity or arrogance.

I see surrender, sacrifice, salvation,

Humility, righteousness, faithfulness, grace, forgiveness,

Love. Love…love…

When I stop! …at the cross

I can see the love of God.

I wish you all a very happy, safe and holy Easter filled with God’s richest blessings in every way.

Chaplain

      Junior School

From the Head of Junior School

As we wind down for the Easter long weekend, it's a great moment to reflect on the truly remarkable week we've had at the Junior School. Despite some hurdles, our community's spirit has shone brightly, reminding us of the strength and unity we share.

Our week was brightened immensely by the much-anticipated Easter Hat Parade. This event, fondly regarded as the "cutest day of the year," did not disappoint! Our young students paraded their creatively crafted hats, adorned with bunnies, eggs, and an array of colourful flowers. The joy and pride on their faces were infectious, and the creativity on display was truly inspiring. A heartfelt thank you to all the parents and teachers who helped make these wonderful hats. Your support and enthusiasm play a huge role in making such events memorable.

Amidst our celebrations, we were also tested by unforeseen challenges. The burst water main presented a significant obstacle, but the way our community rallied together was nothing short of amazing. I extend my sincerest gratitude to the staff who showed remarkable initiative and patience in managing this situation. Quick thinking and teamwork ensured minimal disruption to our students' learning, embodying the resilient spirit of our school community.

In addition to the water main issue, the inclement weather was another challenge that our school faced with grace and adaptability. We appreciate everyone's understanding and cooperation in ensuring the safety and comfort of our students during this time. The resilience and positive attitude displayed by our students during these rainy days were commendable.

As we approach the Easter long weekend, we want to wish all of you a safe, joyous, and restful few days.

We look forward to seeing everyone back at school, refreshed and ready for one last push into the holiday break Until then, take care and enjoy the Easter festivities!

      Dates for Term 1

Please find below some Term 1 - Junior School key dates to add to your calendar:

      • Thursday 11 April (week 11) - Years 3 - 12 Lindisfarne Cross Country Carnival

      FUN Cross Country

I can not believe how much fun students running cross country can have; Friday was off the charts fun.

Students arrived at school in house colours—house-coloured shirts, ribbons, and socks. The teachers did a great job dressing for FUN as well, going all out in their rainbow tutus, rainbow hats and stockings, wigs, and shoes.

This time of year always seems to throw a few weather curve balls when we schedule an event, but this year it was nothing but blue skies and sunshine. The cutest and best race of the day kicked off the program, the Pre-school students running the “CROFT COUNTRY” their aim to be the winner of the “YOU CAN'T CATCH ME CUP”. It was a spectacle with trips, falls, walkers, criers and even one shoe flying off in the home straight. This did not stop any of them with all students making it safely around the course finishing with an ice cold Ice Block.

The serious Year 2 and Year 1 races were run over the 1km course. We have some absolutely amazing runners in these groups, if you blinked you missed the race or maybe just caught the last couple of runners flying home to beat Mr Croft. These runners were all competing for the Ice Cold Ice Blocks that were so generously donated by our amazing sponsor of the day Jo Croft from JoCroft@MortgageChoice.

The last races were our Kindergarten students who have been training the house down in PE lessons. Cutting laps around the back oval, wearing down their running shoes to threadbare fabric and competing hard to take overall line honours. The feeling on the start line was palpable; these kids just wanted to run, and run they did. Eating up the course and flying home to enjoy their ice cold surprise.

Thank you must be given to Justin and Joe, our two groundmen on the day. They set up and pack up every event in rain, hail or shine and do a fantastic job. I think you can agree the tent areas and the finishing chute were just amazing.

Thank you to our sponsor Jo Croft from JoCroft@MortgageChoice. Jo has been the sponsor of all our FUN carnivals for many years now. She is an amazing supporter of Lindisfarne and these Junior events thank you Jo.

Thank you to all of our Stage 1 teachers, Aids and support team, this team of people is simply outstanding and I can not thank everyone for the time, effort and support they give to every student in our school and also to each other. It is a pleasure to work beside some of the most amazing educators and humans.

Delight and Creativity at Our Annual Easter Hat Parade!

This week the ELC came together to celebrate one of our most cherished traditions: the annual Easter Hat Parade. As always, the event was a vibrant display of creativity, craft, and community spirit, marking a highlight in our school calendar for all.

The laughter and smiles of the participants and spectators alike were a testament to the sense of community and shared happiness that this event brings to our school each year. It was such a joy to see all the smiling faces of the children and parents alike.

As we wrap up this year's Easter Hat Parade, we are reminded of the importance of traditions in bringing our community together and creating lasting memories. Let's continue to nurture these moments that celebrate creativity, individuality, and the vibrancy of our school spirit.

      Careers and VET

For our Year 12 students, Australian National University (ANU), based in Canberra, have an early offer program that has just opened, and closes much earlier than almost any other university. If your application is successful you will receive an early conditional offer. A conditional offer will be converted to a full offer when you meet the academic requirements for your program and any other conditions included in your conditional offer. Please see the link which includes information on applying and the co curricular requirements. Also please see myself, Lauren Ward, for any assistance. Australian National University (ANU) are also holding some very useful online sessions about studying there, over the coming months. Please see the link for more information.

      SAT Preparation April 20248123

      SAT Pactice Exam Revolution Prep3

For students potentially interested in studying in the US please see the flyers attached in the newsletter regarding SAT support and preparation that is often required for study at US universities. The SAT’s will be offered digitally which is quite new, so there is also specific preparation for this.

I had the pleasure of meeting many of the Year 10 parents this week at Parent Teacher Interviews. If you were unable to meet with me, in Careers we have one lesson a fortnight and our progress has been focused on looking at some goal setting for the future and understanding the requirements of the HSC, ATAR and post school pathways. We have explored a number of professions including Law and Engineering where there are many and varied pathways. For example a student interested in law could study a Diploma of Conveyancing for one year and become licensed to practise in this area, study a Bachelor of Laws and complete their postgraduate study and registration to practise as a solicitor or one of many other pathways. Throughout Term 2 students will work on preparing for subject selection, including having a one on one mentor discussion to help them understand the subjects available. There will also be a recorded webinar and in person subject selection evening for you to come along to and hear from all of the Faculty Directors about each of the subjects on offer. The subject selection booklet will be provided in Term 2.

For those students interested in university, you may want to consider a Defence University Sponsorship (DUS) through the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Through DUS, students can apply for sponsorship for a broad range of job-relevant degrees whilst they study at any accredited university in Australia. They’ll have their university fees paid for, earn a salary while studying, receive benefits, and walk straight into a role in the Navy, Army or Air Force following graduation. Courses that qualify range from Engineering, Healthcare, Science, Business, Administration and Education. You can apply for sponsorship at any point during your degree, as long as you have completed your first semester and received your results. It's best to apply in your first year of university, to maximise your sponsorship time. If you are applying for the Graduate Medical Program, you need to have passed the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) and can be sponsored from the first year. The ADF will be coming to speak to our Year 12 students on Wednesday the 3rd of April.

St Hilda House - Choosing our motto to build our culture

St Hilda House - Choosing our motto to build our culture

As we embark on our second year as a house, students and staff of Hilda House are continuing to build on the foundations of our house culture.. Last year, senior students voted on our house values and we agreed to strive to embody Passion, Creativity and Humour. Over the past few weeks, staff and students were invited to vote on a motto that would further guide us as a team.

The choices for mottos were informed by bible passages, chosen by the Reverend Constantine to reflect our values and the story of Saint Hilda, the patron Saint of learning and culture. Our house had humble beginnings, the founding students courageously chose to leap into the unknown and contribute to the start of a new house at Lindisfarne.

The motto choices presented to students and staff were:

      • DWELL ON THE BEAUTY OF LIFE. WATCH THE STARS, AND SEE YOURSELF RUNNING WITH THEM (Marcus Aurelius).: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—God's good, pleasing and perfect will." (Romans 12:2)

      • FIDELIS IN PARVO (faithfulness in small things): "We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us." (romans 12:6)

      • THE SOUL BECOMES DYED WITH THE COLOUR OF ITS THOUGHTS (Marcus Aurelius): "Do not neglect your gift, which was given to you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you." (1 Timothy 4:14)

      • A JOYFUL HEART IS GOOD MEDICINE: "A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." (Proverbs 17:22)

After a period of voting, the result was revealed by The Reverend Constantine in our House meeting last week. It was a close race, winning by just two votes!

DWELL ON THE BEAUTY OF LIFE. WATCH THE STARS, AND SEE YOURSELF RUNNING WITH THEM

We are still a small house with so far to go. I am so proud of the spirit embodied in the motto that our house decided upon. It inspires a sense of boundless potential and aspiration, urging us to become part of something greater than ourselves, and to believe in the transformative power of appreciation, imagination, and self-reflection.

Wollumbin Youth Art Award @ Tweed Regional Gallery

The Wollumbin Youth Art Award (WYAA) is a biennial award for young artists aged 5 to 18 years. Held in conjunction with the Wollumbin Art Award, the WYAA is open to young people living in the Tweed, Byron, Ballina, Kyogle, Scenic Rim Shires, Lismore, Gold Coast City, and Richmond Valley. Previously Lindisfarne students have seen much success in this award often receiving highly commended and placed prizes.

Artists can submit visual artworks of any subject matter and medium. The Award, named for the mountain which the Gallery overlooks will explore unique and diverse local perspectives. The WYAA celebrates the artistic talent and creativity of young people living in the region.

The Friends of the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre generously sponsors the Wollumbin Youth Art Award.

Further Information on the Wollumbin Youth Art Award and entry information can be found here. If you are interested in entering please chat with your Visual Arts teacher or your classroom teacher.

      Tweed Regional Gallery Youth Collective

The Tweed Regional Gallery Youth Collective will re-launch this year for teens 13-19 years old. The Youth Collective is a great way for young people to advocate for youth programs at the Gallery, meet like-minded peers and develop skills in event management and arts administration. Expressions of interest can be made online.

      Incognito Art Show

Year 10 and 11 Visual Arts students have been asked to enter the Incognito Art Show, however, other interested students are encouraged to enter also.

What is the Incognito Art Show?

The Incognito Art Show is a not-for-profit organisation supporting Australian artists. We run Australia’s biggest and most inclusive art show.

The Incognito Art Show isn’t an ordinary art sale. Every piece of artwork (A5 in size), regardless of artist, is sold for just $100.

      The Twist?

The identity of an artwork’s artist will remain anonymous at all times. Only once an artwork is bought, will the artist’s name be revealed to the buyer on the back of the artwork.

Profits raised will go towards funding programs that support artists working with disabilities.

The show’s unique model provides greater access to art-buying for those without the usual means to do so, as well as democratises art selection; buyers buy what they truly love, not a big name.

So please join the thrill of someone buying your work anonymously whilst supporting a great cause. All works can be viewed online and purchased online once the physical exhibition is complete.

      Bonjour!

Bonjour! As part of their cultural exploration this term, Year 8 French students took on the challenge of mastering the art of making crêpes. Under Mrs Archer's expert guidance, students have dived into the intricacies of French cooking, using an authentic recipe to whip up these tasty treats. As part of the Camion Bar unit of work, students also discovered the cultural nuances surrounding French cuisine.

Year 7 students have been exploring les pays francophones (French-speaking Countries). During Harmony Week, Year 7 students celebrated their cultural heritage in a truly artistic fashion. Drawing inspiration from their diverse backgrounds, they created stunning artworks infused with the spirit of French expression..

À bientôt for more exciting adventures in French language and culture!

      NSWCIS Championships - Swimming

A couple of updates have hit our inbox regarding the NSWCIS Primary Swimming. There will no doubt be more updates by next week's newsletter deadline.

Well done to the team (L to R in photo) - Jack Sewell, Benji Eke, Ned Simmonds, Naish Morgan - on winning Bronze in the 11-13 years Boys Relay! Off to the NSWPSSA they go if they so choose to take up this opportunity!

Congratulations to Jack Sewell, in Year 6 - who placed 1st in the 11 years 50 Back at the NSWCIS championships.

Football - CIS Cup Open Girls

Our Open Girls Football team bowed out of the CIS Football Cup in round 3 - against a very determined and slick BDC team.

We certainly had our chances, including a brilliant penalty save from the BDC Keeper. BDC clearly took their chances with more consistency, thumping a header home in the 65th minute.

Congratulations to Charli Wiegand on steering in the goal from the set piece freekick.

As you can see in the photo, we have a super young team - with much optimism for the years ahead.

      NFL Flag Program

We are thrilled to bring you an exciting update about our NFL Flag program, a dynamic and inclusive sport that has quickly become a favourite among our students. NFL Flag is a mixed-gender, non-contact version of American Football, played with flag belts akin to oz tag. Over the past two years, our Year 5/6 teams have made us proud by reaching the national level, showcasing their skill, teamwork, and determination.

This year, we're excited to extend the program to include a Year 7/8 competition, offering even more students the opportunity to engage in this fast-paced and fun sport.

How to Join: Registration is now open through Clipboard here - the same platform used for other sports sign-ups. Please ensure you register before the term ends, as registrations will close at that time. Registered students will then be invited to participate in trials early Term 2, leading to the selection of a final squad of 10 for both the 5/6 and 7/8 competitions.

Who Can Participate: We're calling on students of all genders who are eager to get involved, whether you're new to the game or looking to continue your journey in flag football. No prior experience is needed, just a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and contribute to the team.

An Incredible Opportunity: Teams that triumph in their national events will be awarded the ultimate prize - an all-expenses-paid trip to the USA to compete in an international Flag competition.

Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity to be part of our growing NFL Flag program.

Mr Dunn is a former senior representative player from NZ for Otago and Nelson Bays and has high level experience in the 7 a-side game as both a player and coach. Mr Marais also has a wide range of experience with 7s and was an integral part of our girls 7s program last year. Lastly, Miss Smith is our former Lindisfarne Girls Rugby 7s captain and schoolgirl representative player.

      RECENT GAMES

      SUNSHINE COAST GRAMMAR

Our Lindisfarne rugby union squads travelled up to Sunshine Coast Grammar College on Friday last week for three matches across 1st XV, U15 and U13.

      1st XV 7-10

      Link to Game Footage HERE

The original plan for this game was for our 1st XV was due to play Sunshine Coast Grammar’s 1st XV but unfortunately due to a significant number of our players absent/unavailable, we instead played Sunshine Coast Grammar’s U16 squad. However, this was a great game of rugby in some inclement weather and considering most of our 1st XV for this game were also U16 with the exception of 4-5 players, we were very evenly matched with Sunshine Coast Grammar. Our opponents had the majority of the ball in the first half and at the start of the second going up 0-10. However, our boys rose to the challenge in the middle of the second half with a try to Eddie Esgate, which was set up from a powerhouse Charlie Sutton carry; which took the scores to 7-10. Although we had multiple chances to score towards the end of the game and probably should have won the game at the end, unfortunately, we could not get across the try line, which left Sunshine Coast as victors. Standouts in the game were Jack Kerridge, who stepped up in the absence of key playmakers, Charlie Sutton, Timana Andrews and Cimmarron Crawford, who saved us many times on defence with exceptional speed and strength.

      U15

Under overcast and rainy skies, the Lindisfarne Lions under-15s faced a slick Sunshine Coast Grammar team in challenging conditions. The game started slowly for the Lions, with Sunshine Coast Grammar showcasing great territory kicking that pinned Lindisfarne back early on. Slick ball movement from the opposition led to a daunting 19-0 halftime score against the Lions, leaving them with an uphill battle to climb in the second half.

However, the second half saw a remarkable shift in momentum as Lindisfarne Lions rallied with strong, aggressive defence that stifled Sunshine Coast Grammar's advances. A change in attitude became apparent as the Lions fought back fiercely, led by powerful ball carrying from newly installed co-captain Rhys Jones, well supported by Tucker Groves and Teo Martin. The clinical finishing by the outside backs, under the guidance of co-captain Zane Weston, breathed new life into the Lions' performance. Despite winning the second half and narrowing the score gap, the final tally stood at 31-19 in favour of Sunshine Coast Grammar. Nonetheless, the match provided valuable lessons and plenty to work on for the Lions, serving as excellent preparation for the upcoming challenge of Ballymore Cup.

      U13

      Link to Game Footage HERE

In a thrilling rugby match between Lindisfarne and Sunshine Coast, Lindisfarne emerged victorious as underdogs, stunning the crowd with a final score of 17-10. Lindisfarne's triumph was marked by outstanding performances, including crucial tries from Charlie Dunn, Tyler Watkins, and Oli Wilson.

Captain Coby Ellison led Lindisfarne's defense admirably, showcasing incredible skill and determination. Sully Groves, with his strong carries, proved to be a formidable force on the field, making significant contributions to Lindisfarne's success. Tyler Watkins led the team well from the backline, making decisive attacking and defensive calls.

The match also highlighted the emergence of several new players who made a significant impact. Theo Searle, Charlie Dunn, and Lou Robin stood out, proving their worth and demonstrating their talent on the field.

Overall, Lindisfarne's victory was a testament to their teamwork, resilience, and determination. They overcame the odds and delivered a performance that will be remembered for years to come.

      Monday After School Training

In 2024, our main training session outside of school time is on Monday after school from 1530-1645. Although we had great numbers to our first training sessions, rugby union is a team sport and we still need as many of our players to be in attendance week in and week out to grow the Lindisfarne rugby program. Hopefully, the car-pooling details will help this and if we can be of assistance in any way, please let us know.

Also, please note we will NOT be sending reminders for these training sessions (all players and families should assume our Monday afternoon training will ALWAYS BE ON), however we will let you all know in ample time if we need to cancel a session due to weather or other factors.

      Training Attire

Students should also be in proper training attire (NOT school sports uniform) with mouthguard, boots and any other equipment they play with for every training session, including school sport. This requirement also includes integrated school sport on Thursday i.e., students should wear our rugby training top or similar and not the school sport polo at this time. Alongside this, students should have a towel and spare school uniform to change into in case there is wet weather.

      Stack Team APP

The Stack Team app will be our Rugby Union program’s main form of communication for all our squads, with exception of U12 boys.
