Dear Lindisfarne Parents and Guardians,
This week, I visited our Year 11 and Year 8 cohorts on their respective camps. It was a privilege to observe our Year 11 and Year 8 students in this rich learning environment where leadership and teamwork were central themes. The feedback from all our camps have been that these adventures has been overwhelmingly positive, illustrating the growth and learning that occurs when students are challenged and immersed in different environments. These camps are pivotal in offering our students not just a change of scenery but real opportunities to apply their learning in varied contexts. My sincere thanks to the many staff who made these opportunities possible for our students.
Today, we had the privilege of hosting the Association Independent Schools New South Wales Roadshow. The AIS is the peak body supporting and advocating for independent education to Government and other statutory authorities in New South Wales. Hosting this event provided a fantastic opportunity to showcase our school and our achievements to these important groups, further strengthening our position in the educational community.
This Sunday, we invite you to join us at the Mahers Lane Chapel for our Spiritual Gym session, a special occasion as we have the honour of welcoming Bishop Murray. The fellowship will begin at 4.30pm, followed by the service from 5.00pm. This gathering is a wonderful opportunity for spiritual connection and worship, and we look forward to welcoming you for an evening of reflection and community.
Looking ahead to Monday evening, we are delighted to welcome Judith Krause to our ParentEd session for Year 6 parents at 6.00pm. Judith brings extensive expertise in behavioural science, clinical social work, sexual health, and adolescent health and wellbeing. Her programs are renowned for their comprehensive approach to addressing key areas such as decision-making, communication skills, healthy boundaries, anxiety management, and shame resilience. Judith's engaging style and depth of knowledge make her sessions invaluable for parents seeking to support their children through these complex years.
Next Friday night marks the return of our Soul and Blues Festival, featuring ARIA Hall of Famer Phil Burton. Phil, along with James Greening and Darryl Beaton, will lead workshops and masterclasses with our students before culminating in a concert at Ngahriyah. This festival is a fantastic opportunity for our community to come together and enjoy the musical prowess of our students and guest artists. Tickets are available via Trybooking Link - Soul and Blues Festival, and I encourage everyone to join us for what promises to be an unforgettable evening.

Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Guardians,
Year 7 to 11 School Camps
It was a pleasure and privilege to join our Year 11 students on the Leadership Camp this week and to be able to visit Year 8 and Year 7 students as well. Camp week is a time when our students are encouraged and challenged to step out of their comfort zones, grow in their personal development and maturity, and build stronger bonds with their peers by getting to know them a little better. I was very impressed with the way our students went about the activities during camp and the wonderful growth and maturity that ensued as a result of this week’s experiences. We thank our teachers and staff who accompanied them, and our parents who always support our students and our school’s holistic educational endeavours.
Spiritual Gym and Family Eucharist Service on Sunday, 2 June 2024
You’re warmly invited to join our School community in the Mahers Lane Chapel on Sunday, 2nd June for a ‘Spiritual Gym’ Service. Refreshments will begin at 4.30 pm, followed by a Service of Eucharist at 5.00pm, concluding at about 6.00pm. Please come along and join us in praying for God’s blessings and favours upon our students, staff and families. Bishop Murray will be joining us at the Service to receive the commitment and bless the students who are about to start their sacramental program. All are welcome.
Reconciliation Week 2024 Theme: “Now More Than Ever”
Due to Camp Week, the rest of our school will celebrate Reconciliation Week next week (3-7 June 2024). Reconciliation Week is an opportunity for us to ‘build bridges, not walls’ with our First Nations peoples, and to work together to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. As Uncle Victor Slockee aptly said, ‘Reconciliation is more than a word, it is a thought and it is the future. Firstly, Reconciliation is a biblical and Christian principle. We pray that reconciliation will bring us together to learn about our shared histories, culture and achievements.”
Now more than ever we are encouraged to work together for a more reconciled, just, equitable and humane Australia, and to teach our children to build bridges, not walls, with our First Nations people. Please visit the National Reconciliation Week webpage for more resources on how to celebrate Reconciliation Week. Thank you to all those who supported the Kinship Festival last Saturday, and our Junior School staff and students for your wonderful Reconciliation Week art and activities.
World Environment Day 2024
World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5th. This year’s World Environment Day campaign focuses on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” Amidst the ecological crisis that we face, there are reasons for hope when we see the commitment of our young people in ‘caring for the earth and for the poor.’ Equally, our collective response to this crisis ought to include a rethink of our view of the world, from an overly extractive worldview -which regards the earth as something to be used, taken from, and exploited -to a more holistic worldview -which sees the earth as a ‘person’ and human beings part of, not separate from, the rest of creation. “This understanding”, The Rev Jacynthia Murphy says “requires us to broaden our gaze beyond our anthropocentric concerns to include consideration of all living entities in everything we do”.
A Prayer for Our Earth by Pope Francis
All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace.
Please send your prayer requests to prayers@lindisfarne.nsw.edu.au
We would like to join you in praying for these requests.
I wish you all a restful and relaxing weekend, and God’s richest blessings in every way.

Introduction - First Nations Cultural Coordinator
Dear Lindisfarne Community,
I want to introduce myself, Katrina Singh, as the newly appointed First Nations Cultural Engagement Coordinator here at Lindisfarne.
I am very excited to be stepping into this role as I have a passion for education and cultural enrichment. Having worked six years in the educational sphere, I deeply understand the pivotal role teachers play in embedding First Nations culture and knowledge within their teaching practices. I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of fostering cultural understanding and respect in the classroom, and I am eager to extend this ethos across our entire community.
I am equally passionate about nurturing cultural safety and awareness among teachers, both within and outside of the classroom environment. It is my steadfast belief that by empowering educators with the tools and knowledge to create culturally safe spaces, we can cultivate an environment where every student feels valued, seen, and heard.
I am genuinely excited about the journey ahead and the opportunity to collaborate with each and every one of you. Together, we can forge meaningful connections, celebrate diversity, and pave the way for a more inclusive and culturally enriched learning environment at Lindisfarne.
I work on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. If you would like to have a meeting with me or would like to organise a time for me to visit your classrooms, do workshops or Indigenous art lessons please feel free to email me. I look forward to embarking on this journey together and am eager to hear your thoughts, ideas, and aspirations as we work towards our shared goals.
With warm regards,
Katrina Singh

Learning is Fun
Other than welcoming students into our school each morning, the highlights of my days are walking through the school grounds and observing student learning and interactions.
While walking past the Kindy Turtles on Wednesday morning, I could hear a hive of excitement and, on entering the classroom, I saw students engaged in a range of maths activities during their morning settling time. Students were creating patterns out of beads, working with foam tiles to form number patterns and creating resources on the wall of the classroom. The dialogue between students was impressive. Some students were focusing on the number order whilst others were identifying the colours of the tiles to assist them in locating the correct number before placing the tiles down.
Further into my walk through the school I came across 4LH who were outside the classroom engaged in a sorting activity. Students were learning about Modal Verbs and were identifying which Modal Verbs had high, medium or low impact. They could all explain why they chose the specific words and were challenged to be able to briefly explain what a Modal Verb is in their own words.
Later in the day, I was able to actively participate in a 3N lesson focused on cementing students' understanding of the difference between difficult and confusing words. The lesson commenced with revision filled with a range of examples followed by a scavenger hunt in the playground. Kinesthetic learners thrived on this activity as it was used as a fun way to consolidate vocabulary.
The fun didn’t stop there; in our new Performing Arts Centre, Year 2 were playing the xylophones and marimbas, in French, students were playing a game to assist them to remember how to say numbers and then write those words on a show me board, in Digital Technology Kindy Frogs were using QR codes to explore safe websites, 1L was identifying and exploring 3D shapes in the environment while 1A practised their Poetry for the upcoming Murwillumbah Speech Choir performance. 2B were designing and making boats in Science to assist them in understanding what forces enable boats to stay afloat and Preschool Echidnas and Koalas made their own musical instruments in their music lesson, using equipment from their surrounding environment.
If this is an example of one day of learning, you can imagine what all our students do within a week. It also provides an explanation of why your children come home exhausted but filled with new knowledge and a wealth of experiences.
Our teachers are highly experienced and dedicated to making learning fun and engaging, enabling our students to thrive. These are obviously just a few examples of the tremendous learning that is happening within our classrooms in the Junior School on a daily basis. I look forward to seeing what next week has in store.

Supporting Our Children’s Friendships
With our Year 7 to 10 students out at camp this week it got me thinking about friendships in this age group. Camp provides many opportunities for our children to develop resilience and teamwork, to help them step outside of their comfort zones in a safe environment. It also, purposely, gives them the opportunity to work with children in their grade that they may not spend a lot of time with in the day to day of school. It provides the opportunity to spark some new friendships and strengthen the friendships they already have.
Navigating our role in our children’s friendships can be very stressful for parents. We know we shouldn’t be ‘too involved,’ but we also hear we need to be vigilant because of all the possible problems of adolescence. In the online world, there is an overwhelming amount of information out there, and it can be hard to know what is evidence-based and what is just opinion.
At Lindisfarne, we are lucky to be associated with SchoolTV. SchoolTV is a wellbeing resource that can support you in the challenges relating to modern-day parenting. This award-winning resource helps build relationships, foster connections, enable understanding, and break down barriers to navigate a pathway towards better mental health and wellbeing for young people. It can assist in starting conversations on topics that are sometimes awkward or difficult to tackle.

The Round Square Heroes of Discovery - Junior School
This week at the Junior School, we celebrated another milestone in our Round Square Heroes of Discovery journey by concluding our exploration with our sixth hero, Tenacious Tino.
During Monday’s Junior School Assembly, five lucky students were recognised for their ‘hero-like’ traits and celebrated as this week’s ‘Little Heroes.’
In classrooms, students engaged in meaningful conversations about tenacity and the importance of persisting in the face of obstacles. They discussed demonstrating courage, exhibiting resilience, and maintaining a can-do attitude, whether at home, at school, or out in the community.
Here are some examples shared by our K-4 students on how they embody the character traits of Tenacious Tino:
We look forward to introducing our new hero, Inventive Indris, next week and continuing to build our understanding of character traits that help us become better humans and active contributors to a better world.

Preschool National Reconciliation Week
The 27th May marked the beginning of National Reconciliation Week and the Preschool children explored this year's theme, Now More Than Ever through a number of play-based cultural learning experiences.
The children particularly enjoyed engaging in bush tucker tastings, ochre body painting down by the creek, making dilly bags for nature hunting and creating our ‘Sea of Hearts’ (Connecting the Dots through Culture initiative) art installation, just to name a few.
Another highlight was welcoming Mrs Katrina Singh, our new First Nations Cultural Engagement Coordinator, to our Preschool. She shared one of her artworks which tells the story of her family, her Country and how Aboriginal peoples are deeply connected to the land, the skies and the stars. Mrs Katrina taught us about the emu star formation in the milky way which can be seen during the colder months of the year and which signalled the right time to collect emu eggs. She also brought in some artefacts for the children to interact with such as a coolamon made from the outer bark of a tree and a woven basket made from natural fibres.
And a special thank you to our lovely Mrs Gypsy for sharing her cultural knowledge, making a delicious kangaroo stew for the ELC staff and her continuing mentorship in cultural competency conversations.
We are committed to developing a more reconciled nation by teaching the core values of respect, equality and understanding of First Nations peoples and culture to even our youngest of students.

Classroom To Kitchen
This term, Year 2 has been diving into the world of procedural writing with great enthusiasm. Students have worked hard to learn the craft of this type of informative text, acknowledging the importance of including verbs, adverbs and prepositional phrases to add detail to their sequenced steps.
To bring their learning to life, Year 2 recently took their lessons from the classroom to the SAKG outdoor kitchen, making delicious bruschetta. This hands on cooking adventure allowed them to experience each flavourful step, from slowly drizzling olive oil to assembling the perfect bite. Along the way, students discussed the ‘what,’ ‘how’ and ‘where’ of each step, allowing them to verbalise key components of the recipe with precision.
Once back in the classroom, our young culinary writers showcased the writing skills they’ve learnt so far this term by crafting their own mouth watering bruschetta recipes. This delicious experience was certainly one to remember.

5D Celebrates Generosity with a Special Lunch
Class 5D recently enjoyed a delightful lunch as a reward for being the top donors in our school's food drive for Fred's Place, a local homeless charity. Under the guidance of Reverend Constantine, who teaches that compassion is love in action, 5D made significant contributions to support those in need.
The celebration featured a delicious pasta lunch, complete with garlic bread and a chocolate treat, generously provided by Lia Mason and her catering team. The students savoured every bite, feeling appreciated for their efforts.
This special event highlighted our school community's commitment to caring for others. The students of 5D expressed their gratitude for belonging to a school that values helping those in need. Congratulations to 5D and a big thank you to everyone involved in making this lunch a memorable celebration of generosity and community spirit.

Brainstorm Productions
This week our Year 5 and 6 students were lucky enough to be entertained and inspired by a visiting theatre group called Brainstorm Productions.
Brainstorm Productions is an educational group bringing about positive social change through theatre; empowering students with practical strategies to enhance their mental health, resilience and wellbeing. The performance was followed by a Q&A designed to support our school’s existing wellbeing, cyber safety and pastoral care programs.
It was a fabulous opportunity for our Stage 3 students to explore topics that help them to develop and analyse practical skills such as self-awareness, self-management and help-seeking; particularly in regards to social media. Brainstorm Productions unpacked and presented stories of hope and resilience, inspiring our students to draw on their strengths and values to face life’s challenges.
The students were thoroughly engaged, actively involved and it was a fantastic learning experience for all.

From the Head of Senior School
This week, our Senior School students returned from their respective camps with overwhelmingly positive reports. Each camp served as an excellent opportunity for students to step outside the classroom environment, build friendships, and deepen connections with staff. These experiences are invaluable, offering students the chance to challenge themselves in new ways and grow both personally and socially.
Building on the momentum of last week's Dare to Dream and DARE workshops for our Year 11 students, it is wonderful to see how many opportunities the Senior School provides for students to grow and develop. Experiencing unfamiliar situations, places, and challenges helps our students see the most growth.
Camps provide a unique setting for students to develop resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills. Activities ranging from hiking and team-building exercises to reflective discussions around the campfire help students learn more about themselves and each other. It is in these moments of challenge and discovery that lifelong memories are made and essential life skills are honed.
As we strive to help students become the best versions of themselves, I am reminded of an acronym developed by English pastor Alan Redpath: THINK (True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, Kind). This message is particularly relevant as we reach a time in the school term when we may feel tired and less vigilant about our thoughts and actions. Sometimes, we have lapses in judgment.
I urge all students to THINK before they speak - or post. It is essential to build on the camaraderie and cohesion fostered at camp and ensure we do not let a lapse in judgment undo all the hard work. In our digital age, where words can be shared instantly and broadly, the THINK acronym serves as a powerful reminder of the impact our words can have on others.
The experiences at our camps have reinforced the importance of Lindisfarne’s values: compassion, Wisdom, and Respect. These values were evident in the way students supported each other through challenging activities and celebrated each other's successes. By embodying these principles, our students not only enhanced their personal growth but also contributed to a positive and inclusive school culture.
Keeping the spirit of collaboration and support alive will be important as we move forward. The bonds formed and lessons learned at camp will serve as a foundation for continued personal and collective growth. By always striving to be true, helpful, inspiring, necessary, and kind, we can ensure that our school remains a place where everyone feels valued and empowered.
Thank you to all the staff who organised and supported the camps and to the students who embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm and an open heart. Together, we are creating an environment that encourages everyone to reach their full potential.

DARE - Empowering Our Young Men
Last week, our Year 11 boys had the incredible opportunity to participate in the DARE program, held at Pioneer Country. Renowned speaker Glen Gerreyn engaged our students with his insightful and impactful message.
Coming of age is undeniably challenging. Our young men must navigate a complex landscape of masculinity and face the daunting task of determining the kind of men they want to become,
The DARE program is built on the premise that men are not at the mercy of their bodies and hormones. It is crucial that they are provided with the information and tools to empower them to manage their emotions and make sound decisions. The seminar created a safe and open environment where students could hear answers to the tough questions that all young men have on their minds but are frequently unable to ask.
Glen Gerreyn's humorous and frank approach got straight to the heart of the issues surrounding boys and respectful relationships. The program highlighted the power of individual choice in critical areas such as exercise, nutrition, money management, and building positive relationships. It provided our young men with the opportunity to make life-changing decisions for the short and long term.
Glen tackled difficult issues head-on, including:
- Sex & Relationships: Discussing the importance of healthy, respectful relationships
- Pornography: Addressing the impact of pornography on individuals and relationships
- Nutrition: Emphasising the importance of good nutrition for overall wellbeing
- The Role of Mentors: Highlighting the value of mentors in guiding and shaping young men's lives
- Positive Masculinity: Encouraging a positive and respectful approach tomasculinity
At Lindisfarne, we remain committed to supporting our young men as they navigate life. The DARE program is testimony to this commitment, providing them with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed and positive choices. The feedback from our Year 11 boys has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are proud of the steps they are taking towards becoming the men they aspire to be.
The success of the DARE program underscores our dedication to fostering a supportive and empowering environment for all our students. We look forward to continuing to provide such valuable opportunities in the future.

Legal Studies Excursion
Last Thursday, our Year 11 Legal Studies students embarked on an invaluable excursion to the Supreme and District Courts in Brisbane. This visit provided them with the unique opportunity to observe both civil and criminal proceedings, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our legal system. By exploring the fundamentals of our nation's judiciary, the excursion aims to instill a conscious awareness and respect for the law among our young citizens.
While navigating the courtroom environment, students not only gained insights into the importance of legal processes but also engaged directly with judicial officers, offering a hands-on experience that significantly broadened their perspectives on society. These immersive experiences align perfectly with the vision of the BEE faculty, which prioritises the development of skills, knowledge, and understanding through real-world encounters, ensuring our students are well-prepared for the complexities of the legal landscape.

Living History Presentation
Last Friday, Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School provided a special World War I Living History presentation for our Stage 5 History students. This immersive experience offered students an in-depth exploration of World War I, enabling them to interact with historical artifacts and gain a profound understanding of Australia's role in the war.
Year 9 and 10 students had the rare opportunity to handle objects used by Australian soldiers in the trenches of the Western Front during WWI. They closely examined a gas mask, a periscope, medic bags, an artillery shell casing, and more. This hands-on interaction allowed students to engage directly with the historical sources and artifacts typically found in their history textbooks.
The presentation was tailored to align with our Stage 5 History curriculum, providing a unique opportunity for students to connect with the past and contemplate the sacrifices made by those who served. This event not only enhanced their historical knowledge but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the significance of Australia's contributions during World War I.

Year 2 Students Thrilled by Mad About Science Incursion
Last week, our Year 2 students had an exhilarating time during the Mad About Science incursion, diving into the exciting world of Forces in Action. They conducted hands-on experiments to understand friction by observing toy vehicles on various surfaces, explored the intriguing motion of gyroscopes, and witnessed the effects of air resistance and magnetic forces.
The session also included fascinating demonstrations on buoyancy, comparing the floating and sinking of objects in fresh versus salt water.
This incursion enriched our current Science Unit by bringing theoretical concepts to life. The engaging and interactive demonstrations captivated the students, leaving many in awe and igniting their curiosity for science.
