Foreword

Dear Lindisfarne Parents and Guardians,

As I returned from my sabbatical leave, I thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting with students, staff, parents, and members of our school community. I am immensely grateful for Mrs Charlotte Lush and the team's dedication and leadership, which have continued to drive our school forward in my absence. This week has been filled with significant achievements and community engagement, and I am excited to share a few highlights with you.

Firstly, a massive thank you to all the staff, parents, students, and sponsors who gathered to make last weekend’s P&F FunFest a resounding success. The event was a spectacular display of community spirit and enjoyment, with an array of activities, rides, and food that everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The success of the P&F FunFest is a testament to the strong bonds and cooperative spirit within our Lindisfarne community, and it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying the day. A special thank you to P&F FunFest Convenor Steve Cornell and Director of Community Engagement Simon McKinley for their incredible coordination and leadership.

At our Senior School assembly on Tuesday, I was pleased to announce our School Captains for 2025. The calibre of candidates for student leadership positions for the year ahead is of a very high standard, and I know the Class of 2025 is looking forward to building on the legacy of student leadership at Lindisfarne.

Please join me in congratulating the 2025 School Captains, Jack Hou and Scout Bee Jones, and Vice Captains River Robinson and Amity Leach. These four young people have demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, and we are confident they will serve our school with distinction.

This week, our Year 5 students embarked on their camp to Lake Ainsworth at Lennox Head, while our Year 3 Students stayed closer to home, enjoying Carool and Camp Goodenough. The annual camps are an exciting time filled with educational, team-building, and fun activities that provide our students with valuable learning experiences and foster teamwork and personal and collective growth.

In a pivotal stage of the nationally recognised Rite Journey program, our Year 9 students spent Wednesday and Thursday on their solo experiences at the Abyss Camp. This significant event is designed to foster self-reflection and personal development as students contemplate their future growth and their roles within the community as they journey into adulthood. It’s a profound opportunity for our students to develop resilience, reflect deeply, and better understand themselves.

Our Lindisfarne Athletics team also distinguished itself at the NCIS Championships held in Coffs Harbour this week. Thank you to Mr Damien Clucas and the staff and parents who supported our students in representing our School with pride and determination.

We had an exciting morning on Wednesday as we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Southern Cross University at their Gold Coast campus. This partnership opens up fantastic opportunities for our students and staff, enhancing our academic programs and providing new avenues for collaborative research and learning. We are eager to explore the benefits this partnership will bring to our community.

Later that evening, the HSC Music Showcase occurred as the HSC Music Class of 2024 performed their major works. The performances were sophisticated and showed a depth of maturity and learning, setting a new benchmark for music excellence at Lindisfarne. Congratulations to our students, the incredible staff and mentors led by the Director of Performing Arts, Mr Todd Hardy, our supportive parents, and the School community.

Yesterday, I shared with the staff the exciting news that Lindisfarne has gained international recognition as an Apple Distinguished School for the 2024–2027 program term!

This recognition is a testament to the collective effort of our staff in integrating technology into our classrooms, inspiring innovation, and driving educational excellence. Our commitment to creating a technology-rich learning environment has been acknowledged internationally, and I’m grateful for our staff's dedicated and forward-thinking approach.

Becoming an Apple Distinguished School has been a long journey, and I thank all who have contributed to the process. A special thank you to Kane Bradford, Anthony Gerke, Scott Mellis, and, previously, Gavin Kennedy for their commitment to leading the School through this rigorous process.

Tonight marks an important event in our school calendar—the Vinnies Sleepout. Our school participates in this event each year to raise awareness and funds for the homeless. It is a great cause that highlights the importance of community service and empathy, and I am proud of our students and staff for their enthusiastic participation.

I want to remind everyone that our Spiritual Gym will be held this Sunday at the Mahers Lane Chapel. We will begin with refreshments at 4:30 PM, followed by the service from 5 PM to 6 PM. This gathering is an excellent opportunity for spiritual reflection and community connection. I encourage all to join and share in this meaningful experience.

As Father’s Day approaches on Sunday, I’m pleased to share that our annual P&F Big Boys Breakfasts will be held next Wednesday and Thursday. This is always a welcomed event and a great chance for our students to gather and join in celebrating their dad or father figures and mentors. Wednesday will be at the Junior School, and Thursday will be at the Mahers Lane Campus. Please see the information below for all the details and use the following links to purchase your tickets or scan the QR codes:

As I have returned to school, I have been inspired by the energy and commitment of our school community. Thank you for your warm welcome back and continued support of our shared goals and values. I look forward to engaging with many of you in the coming weeks and contributing again to our school’s dynamic environment.

After a very wet year to date, spring has arrived early on the Tweed Coast, and I trust all families will get an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather over the weekend ahead.

Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Guardians,

A Transformative Education

It was Abraham Lincoln who said, “when I do good, I feel good.” In other words, showing acts of kindness and doing good deeds have a positive impact, not only on the recipients of our kindness and generosity, but also on the mental health and wellbeing of the givers.

At Lindisfarne School, we always encourage our students to use their privilege for the good of others, and for the betterment of the Australian society and the world at large. Our Christian faith teaches us that it is Christ Himself that we serve in those who are marginalised and whom our society encourages us not to see (cf. Matthew 25:40). Thank you for your support of our Vinnies Sleepout fundraiser taking place tonight. Please donate HERE if you’re still able to give. May the Lord reward you as only He can.

Year 4 Godly Play Sessions

It’s been a real joy to introduce our Year 4s to the Godly Play sessions where we have been exploring stories about Jesus’ life, and Creation. Godly Play provides a space for our young people to learn the art of silence, stillness and contemplation, so vital for holistic wellbeing in an increasingly noisy society.

Spiritual Gym on Sunday, 1st September 2024

We extend a warm invitation for you to join our School community in the Mahers Lane Chapel on Sunday, September 1 for a Spiritual Gym Service. Refreshments will begin at 4.30pm, followed by a Service of Eucharist at 5pm, concluding at about 6pm. Please come along as we seek God’s blessings, guidance and protection and entrust our students, staff, fathers and families to Him who alone can fulfil the deepest longings of our hearts. All are welcome.

A Happy Father’s Day

As we celebrate Father’s Day this Sunday, we give thanks to God for all our fathers and father-figures in our lives. We are also very mindful of those who have lost their fathers, or are estranged from them. We pray for God’s blessings on all our fathers, and for the roles they play in the life of our students and our school community. We ask for God’s comfort and consolation on all those who will be struggling this weekend, and pray for the repose of the deceased fathers of our school and wider community.

Strength of a Mountain

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad

May we continue to be grateful for all we have and for all we are.

The Round Square Heroes of Discovery - Junior School

This week at the Junior School, we proudly introduced our 9th Round Square Hero of Discovery, Inquisitive Indu.

Inquisitive Indu is known for her natural curiosity and deep desire to learn and understand the world around her. She inspires us all to ask questions, seek answers, and turn every journey of discovery into an exciting adventure!

In classrooms across the Junior School, teachers have been sharing Indu’s Hero Story with students, sparking meaningful discussions on how we can embody these character traits in various aspects of our lives—whether in the classroom, on the playground, at home, or within our broader community.

We are excited to see Inquisitive Indu’s influence grow as her traits shine brightly among our students over the coming weeks. Together, we aim to make positive contributions to the world we live in, one inquisitive mind at a time.

Lastly, a big thank you to Miss Abi Hails for her dedication and commitment during her time as Acting Dean of Students. Her efforts have been instrumental in sustaining the momentum of the Heroes of Discovery program, enhancing meaningful connections, character development, and the overall positive culture at the Junior School.

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden - Update

This September is Kitchen Garden Month-Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation’s celebration of Kitchen Gardens across Australia.

We’re super excited to celebrate our Kitchen Garden here at the Junior School, which has become a hub of growth and learning. This month we’re reflecting on the incredible journey our garden has taken and the countless benefits it continues to offer.

Our garden is more than just a place to grow plants—it’s a living classroom. Over the past 6 weeks, students from years 1 to 4 have had the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning, from planting seeds and seedlings to earning their tool and wheelbarrow licences, from dissecting seeds to examining soil erosion, from making sun prints to mapping the shade. Check out the photos.

One of the most rewarding aspects of our kitchen garden will be seeing the fruits (and vegetables!) of our labour make their way into the school kitchen. This month, we’ll be eating fresh salads, herbs, and dishes prepared with ingredients grown right here at school. It’s a wonderful way to show our students the full cycle of food production—from seed to plate—and to encourage healthy eating habits.

As we move forward, we’re excited to continue expanding and improving our garden. Plans are already underway to introduce new crops, create more seating areas for outdoor learning, and even add a greenhouse!

Happy Kitchen Garden Month!

Junior School French Speaking Competition

Last week, the Junior School held its inaugural French Speaking competition. All Year 4 students presented their speeches in class, with 12 finalists selected for the final day held on Thursday. Additionally, two students from each class were chosen to serve as judges.

The students' speeches followed the guidelines of the MLTQ competition held on the Gold Coast each year. As a French teacher and native speaker, I was genuinely blown away by their commitment, dedication, effort, and the incredible results they achieved. Their hard work was evident, and the support from their friends made the event even more enjoyable for everyone involved.

I am extremely proud of each student for stepping up to the challenge, venturing out of their comfort zones, and rising to the occasion. Bravo à tous! The results will be announced next week at Assembly.

Year 6 Camp

Year 6 Camp

In the early Monday morning of Week 5, Year 6 set off on a spectacular trip to Canberra. The trip was full of fun, excitement and adventure.

On Monday morning, Week 5, the Year 6 cohort departed from the Gold Coast Airport and headed for Canberra for the next four days. After a long day of travel, Year 6 finally arrived in Canberra. Each group then participated in one or two activities, such as Mt Ainslie Lookout, where we viewed Canberra from above; some students cycled around Lake Burley-Griffin, and we also visited the National Capital Exhibition, where we learnt about Canberra's history. At about 6:30pm, we reached the Ibis Styles Hotel and had our first meal in Australia’s Capital city.

In the early morning of Tuesday 20th, students had their breakfast, were split into their activity groups and were sent off to a day of adventure in Canberra. The groups participated in activities such as visiting Government House, where the Governor General lives, going to the Australian electoral office where students had the opportunity to host their very own election and learn about how elections work, visiting the national museum, which housed generations of beautiful artworks, more students also had the opportunity to bike ride around Lake Burley-Griffin, named after the person who designed Canberra and we also visited the Museum of Australian Democracy, where we had the opportunity to learn about the city of Canberra. Before students returned to their cabins, the Year 6 cohort had the opportunity to experience all the attractions at Questacon, such as the earthquake simulator. Before the students returned to their cabins, we were treated to a delicious dinner at Questacon. After a long day of fun in Canberra, students returned to their rooms for a good night's rest.

In the early morning of Wednesday 21st, students awoke to the sound of a knock on their doors and a call down to breakfast. Once the students were ready for the day, they were split into their groups and sent onto the buses for another day of adventure. On the third day of the trip students participated in activities such as visiting the Botanical Gardens where we viewed and learned different types of Australian native trees and plants, a self-guided walk through the ANZAC memorials, we even went to the Australian Institute of Sport where students had the opportunity to view Olympians train and we even got to try out some sport simulation games. Students even had the opportunity to have a guided tour to the Australian Parliament house and view the Senate and House of Representatives debate over bills. After a long day of exploring Canberra, students returned to the hotel for dinner before going to bed.

On the final day of our trip to Australia’s Capital City some of our groups visited the orienteering at the National Arboretum, where we participated in a scavenger hunt around the property grounds. We then had a fun 3-hour bus ride back to the airport, full of chatting to friends and karaoke, which may have slightly annoyed our bus driver. After thanking the drivers for driving us throughout Canberra for the past four days, we checked into our flight and headed back to the Gold Coast on a plane full of tired kids, home for a long rest.

On behalf of the Year 6 cohort we would like to thank every teacher that took us to Canberra and made this possible. Special thanks to Ms Diaz, the Year 6 Coordinator for organising this trip. There is no doubt that our trip to Canberra was a spectacular success and we are sure that this will be an everlasting memory for each and every one of us.

Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

This week, I want to revisit concerns about our young people's online presence. Social media and smartphones have become deeply intertwined with the lives of our students. While we are well aware of the challenges these platforms can pose, I want to draw attention to an increasingly alarming and urgent issue - youth gambling.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Australians lose about $25 billion annually on legal forms of gambling, the largest per capita losses in the world. This statistic is sobering, but what is more concerning is how deeply gambling has become enmeshed in the sports our children play and watch. The online environment, unfortunately, offers innovative and subtle ways for gambling to be marketed directly to our young people.

A recent study of secondary school students revealed that nearly a third had gambled in the previous 30 days. This statistic is a stark reminder that our school is not exempt from these challenges. The accessibility of gambling has increased, with students only needing a debit card to place bets.

As a school, we remain committed to educating our students about the harmful effects of gambling. However, this is not a challenge we can tackle alone. We ask that parents and guardians join us in reinforcing this crucial message at home. By working together, we can help protect our young people from the risks associated with gambling and guide them toward making responsible choices.

Congratulations

As announced by Principal Marquardt above, I would like to add my congratulations to our newly elected School Captains and Vice Captains for 2025 - Scout Bee Jones, Jack Hou, Amity Leach and River Robinson. These exceptional students have demonstrated their commitment to our school values and leadership potential. They will serve as outstanding role models for our student body, upholding the spirit of Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School with integrity, compassion, and dedication. We look forward to supporting them as they embark on this important leadership journey.

The Abyss

This week, our Year 9 students completed the Abyss solo camp, a significant and challenging component of The Rite Journey program. During this solo camping challenge, students disconnected from the online world and embraced the opportunity to spend time in nature on a silent retreat. While the experience was undoubtedly demanding, it offered invaluable moments of reflection and personal growth. We are incredibly proud of all the students who rose to the challenge and completed it successfully. A special thank you goes to Mrs Cathy Myers for her outstanding organisation and leadership of this terrific program, which continues to play a crucial role in developing our young people.

Year 10 Work Experience

The Year 10 Work Experience Info Night was a great success, providing students and their families with essential insights and guidance as they prepare for this valuable opportunity. Although Work Experience isn't scheduled until late November, early preparation is key to ensuring a meaningful and enriching experience. Thank you to our Director of Careers and VET, Mrs Lauren Ward, for her outstanding leadership and dedication in guiding our students through this important program.

HSC Music Showcase

This week’s HSC Music Showcase was an outstanding event, offering us the opportunity to gather and witness the incredible talent of our students as they performed some of their HSC pieces. The level of skill and artistry displayed was exceptional, testimony to the hard work and dedication of each performer. We wish our HSC Music students all the best as they continue their preparation for their final assessments, confident that their commitment will lead to great success.

Year 11 Hospitality 2024 Funfest Food Stalls: A Success!

On Saturday, August 24th, the Year 11 Hospitality students showcased their culinary talents at the 2024 Funfest. As part of their VET Hospitality assessment, the students worked in teams to design, plan, and execute three food stalls. Each team created a unique theme, carefully developed three final dishes, and served them to the Funfest crowd. The delicious offerings included Mexican/Hawaiian Loaded Potatoes, Sticky Pork/Tofu Bao Buns, and Chicken/Falafel Souvlaki Bowls. This event provided students with real-world hospitality industry experience and contributed to the industry hours required for their Certificate II in Cookery. It was a valuable opportunity for the students to apply their skills in a practical setting, gaining hands-on experience that will be invaluable as they pursue their careers in the hospitality industry. Congratulations to all the students for their hard work and success on the day! A special thank you to all the staff who supported and assisted the students, including Food Services assistants Rebecca Klein, Clare Walker, and Sophie Elineau. We are especially grateful to Food Services Manager Lia Mason for her leadership and industry expertise which were instrumental in guiding the students through this important assessment and Director of VET/Careers Lauren Ward.

Well done to everyone involved!

Year 10 Work Experience - 25th-28th November 2024

On Tuesday evening 27th August Year 10 students and families were invited to attend an information evening covering the requirements of work experience, how to find an employer, some ideas for employers to approach and to listen to a number of our Year 11 and 12 students share their work experience reflections. The information has now been shared with all Year 10 students and families. Year 11 student, Grace Riordan, has shared her reflection on work experience below:

“In Year 10, I was lucky enough to spend my 4 days of work experience in a Kindy classroom of a primary school. Teaching was one of the future careers I was weighing up, so having access to this opportunity was really valuable. Although I have chosen a different career path now, I have no regrets about choosing the Junior School as my work experience. Kids are one of my many passions and I had so much fun connecting with them and helping them in all aspects of their school life. By the end of the week, I had already grown attached to the whole class. Being a part of the teaching team with Miss Amy and Miss Brown was so interesting, and I gained a deeper understanding of what teaching looks like, beyond just educating the younger generation. The adoration and high esteem that the kids hold you too is heartwarming, and I finished each day with a sense of pride and accomplishment. If you are interested in any type of career involving teaching or just children in general, I would definitely recommend spending your valuable work experience time in a classroom setting.”

Wellbeing Update

As we head towards the pointy end of Term 3, the topic covered in Wellio in the Senior School has been Taking Ownership. For our young people on the cusp of adulthood, the focus has been on taking positive ownership over their lives by focusing on aspects within their circle of influence and avoiding unhelpful self-talk, ‘whinging’ and resorting to the default of blaming others. When problems and challenges arise, such as looming assessments, exams, friendship issues, relationships, clashes with parents/teachers, part time jobs and many more, our young men and women are faced with the option of responding reactively and doing nothing or being proactive and instigating positive change.

Being proactive is not always easy to do, and as young people grow and develop they continue to build their emotional toolkit. A helpful way to facilitate this growth is by understanding and applying the ‘circle of influence’ as opposed to the ‘circle of concern’. The former involves letting go of what we cannot control or influence and the latter encourages us to grasp firmly to what we can. This conversation could be extended to the breakfast table, the dinner table or during a drive to and from school. Ask your son or daughter what areas of their life they have control or influence over, and how they can contribute to positive change in their social spheres. Suggest they start with small, manageable steps, such as devising a study schedule or timetable, being bold in chatting to a teacher after class about that challenging maths problem or essay structure or instigating conversation to mend a damaged relationship.

As they look to make a positive difference in the community, students may like to volunteer their time in school or beyond (as many already do) - at their local church, the surf club, a sports club or even Bushcare. A helpful non-formal education framework for building these skills exists in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, and I encourage you to come along to the Chapel next Monday evening to hear about how being a part of the Award can help build resilience and initiative.

Sport

Sport

Another busy week in the Sports Department, not measured on our sports volume sports barometer - but with the biggest logistics event of the year, the rescheduled NCIS Athletics. Lindisfarne staff run the track for this event, trekking all of our gear down to get this done. Full report below.

Please remember Sport nominations are next week:

Term 4 Sports selections will open on Thursday 5 September, 7pm via Clipboard. These are available to view on Clipboard (full written instructions for Clipboard are available HERE).

Please discuss the options available with students, prior to Thursday 5 September. Please note that due to the seasonal nature of sports, options vary from term to term, and some Term 3 sports are not available in Term 4.

All Students need to make a selection;no students will have their sports automatically filled.

You can also view the Sport Selection Options linked below.

We encourage students to carefully select their sports, and where applicable - to network with their friends in advance of when selections open (including having contingency plans if selections fill-up). Please note that there are no sport swaps after the selection process - swapping students across rolls and unravelling finance is not a straightforward process.

Our integrated sports program is the compulsory sport that will be timetabled into students' academic calendar for Years 5 to 10 - with Years 11 and 12 optional. This sports program is part of the NSW Education and Standards Authority (NESA) and as such contributes to the minimum hours of Physical Activity within the school-mandated curriculum.

NCIS Athletics

Many thanks to our Lindisfarne community for your efforts in pulling together the rescheduled NCIS Athletics event yesterday. Additional thanks for small - but big contributions - such as wearing impeccable Lindisfarne team attire. I cannot recall looking into the stands and seeing a blemish in this space.

Best wishes to those that are embarking on the NSWCIS Sydney trip - as widely advertised, you basically have 36 hours to accept, or not.

Age Champions and Champion Schools

Congratulations to our Primary contingent on our overall point score placing in first place - which gets rubbed out with our larger student volumes on the percentages score.

Likewise, our Secondary students who placed 2nd in the overall - but don’t figure in the percentage scoring.

A massive congratulations to any of our Age Champions and Placegetters, amazing efforts throughout the day - notwithstanding the hours and hours of training to get such results:

Border Schools Gala Day

Touch Football

Our Lindisfarne Touch Football Teams demonstrated their skills at the Border Schools Competition last week. This was a great hit-out for our teams ahead of the Kings cup and Qld All Schools that are fast approaching. Our Open girls were impressive, with rugby 7’s converts Ruby Power and Tiggi Groves showing their skills are easily transferable to touch, combining for multiple tries throughout the day. The 15 boys always turn up and play well and this day was no exception. Many teams were unable to match the speed of Max Clunies-Ross or the skills of Zane Weston. In the U13 Girls Georgia Brunke, Phoebe Nagle and the Hawkins twins were standouts, while new-comer Winnie Humpreys showcased her speed for a number of runaway tries on the wing. The 15 Girls were missing a few key players with other commitments, but that invited others to step-up into a leading role, like Poppy Lynch and Lola Parsons who shone throughout the day.
Well done to all of our teams who played in great spirit and represented Lindisfarne with pride.

Chess

Representing Lindisfarne with distinction, Xavier Galle delivered an outstanding performance at the recent Border Schools Competition, securing an impressive 4th place overall. Competing against some of the top talent in the region, Xavier held his own, only narrowly missing out on the podium to three players who are nationally ranked. His dedication, skill, and sportsmanship were on full display, making the Lindisfarne community proud of his achievements.

Tennis

The Border Schools Tennis Competition took place on August 21, showcasing impressive talent and sportsmanship from students from Lindisfarne, Hillcrest College and St Andrews College. The event format required the boys to play in teams of two and featured singles and doubles matches in both the Under 15’s Boys and Open Boys categories.

The Under 15’s pairing of Harlem Selvey and Charlie Buchan dominated the Under 15’s competition and won the Final, 3 Sets to love. The partner awareness and tactical play from the boys in the doubles matches were excellent. However, the real highlight was the positive spirit and enjoyment for the game the boys demonstrated.

Jay Saunders and Chayse Kleinhans volunteered to team up for the Open Boys competition and had a harder path to the finals. This is understandable when you consider that most of the boys they were playing against were 3 years older. In windy conditions, their consistent serving and solid ground strokes gave the boys the edge. Calm heads and clever tactics led to Jay and Chayse finishing as victors in a tense, final doubles match.

RECENT GAMES

QLD Rugby Sunshine Coast 7s

On Friday last week, our 7s squads travelled to Sunshine Coast Stadium in Kawana to play in the QLD Rugby Sunshine Coast 7s. This was a massive day for the boys and girls with a very early start and late return but it was a great experience for all students getting to play some high level schoolboy and girl rugby 7s. We also want to say a big thank you to all parents who made the trip up to support our teams.

U18 Boys

Our U18 boys played four games on the day, three pool games and one final. Although our open boys were short on numbers with some late withdrawals, they performed admirably in pool games with a win over Citipointe (46-0), a draw with North Lakes High School (24-24) and a loss to Sunshine Coast Grammar (12-28), where the score was not reflective of the competitive nature of the game. From these results, and the fact North Lakes scored first in our match against them, we went into the 5th and 6th play-off where we played Mountain Creek and despite some tired legs and one of our best players, Cimarron Crawford, having to leave early for a boxing match, we ran out convincing winners (28-10).

Overall, our U18 boys squad keeps improving on both attack and defence and are building nicely for the last tournaments of the year. Will Sullivan and Flynn McCulloch were both very good in this tournament and was ably supported by Cimarron Crawford, Sam Stovin, Max Reid and Cash Cratchley. Abel Itty and Bailey Le Brese (who is an U16 and was in his first tournament for our U18 7s) also had some nice moments on attack.

U15 Boys

Due to some late withdrawals because of injury, the u15s boys went into the tournament a little understrength, however this provided some of the younger boys in the squad with the opportunity to gain some great experience for next year. The first game against Maryborough SHS was a torrid affair with our boys finally succumbing to constant pressure and the scoreboard read 19-17 against us in the end. Maryborough ended up in the Grand Final so it was a strong start. It gave a glimpse into the future with some u14 boys performing admirably and missing out by a missed conversion was a tough loss.

The second game found us against a very willing St Johns Nambour team and as the game progressed injuries and lack of tournament composure took its toll, as did a mounting penalty count. The team lost 24-14, but didn’t stop trying against a bigger and faster opponent.

The 5th vs 6th playoff found us tiring against a very aggressive St Lukes team and the boys will have gained some great experience in the nature of tournament rugby in when to switch on and off. A long day of travel and large breaks between game finally caught up with us and St Lukes won comfortably. The boys were particularly willing all day and perhaps a lack of experience hurt the team. No doubt they will take these lessons into the next tournament. Stand out players of the day were Eden Humphries and Teo Martin.

U13 Boys

The U13 rugby team travelled to the Sunshine Coast last Friday and delivered an impressive performance against strong competition. They started the day with back-to-back victories, showcasing some of their best rugby against North Lakes State High and St Columbus College. The boys demonstrated excellent teamwork, skill, and determination, which led to their well-deserved wins. However, they faced a formidable opponent in St Johns Nambour, losing twice to a team that proved too strong and fast on the day. Despite these losses, the team’s effort and resilience were commendable. This experience will undoubtedly serve as valuable preparation for the challenges ahead. Well done to all players!

U18 Girls

The U18 girls took a strong squad to the Sunshine Coast and came away as champions of Division 2 claiming four victories from four games. Our strongest opponents came from Good Samaritan who definitely pushed us hard in the final which we won 22-12. The whole squad showed moments of individual brilliance and there were times where they combined beautifully on attack scoring some wonderful team tries. The girls strong and willing defence really stood out as the day progressed with all players never taking a backwards step. It is great  to see the continuing development of our girls in our rugby programme with Zoe Marshall making great progress in our recent tournaments. Ruby Power continued to show her fabulous ability and understanding of rugby and Lois Diver has gone from strength to strength this year. A target for this group of girls will be to enter Division 1 next year and to be highly competitive.

Huge congratulations to the whole squad for their performance last Friday!

U15 Girls

Our young and relatively inexperienced U15 girls performed well throughout their three games. This group is going from strength to strength and their understanding of the structure of rugby is really improving. All of the girls thrive on the physical element and are totally committed to their tackling. At the end of the day the girls came away with one win, one draw and one loss. It was fabulous to see the progress made by Sienna Wright, and Inahla Munro played very well in her first rugby experience. Sooke Paley was a standout player highlighted by the Queensland Rugby Referee and Tily Mison, Millie Driver, Jasmine Harrison and Makayla Simmonds all displayed fantastic skills and commitment throughout the tournament.

Monday After School Training

In 2024, our main training session outside of school time is on Monday after school from 1530-1645 and this remains the same in Term 3. Although we have had good numbers to our term 1 and 2 training sessions, rugby union is a team sport and we still need as many of our players to be in attendance week in and week out to grow the Lindisfarne rugby program in term 3. Hopefully, the car-pooling details will help this and if we can be of assistance in any way, please let us know.

Also, please note we will NOT be sending reminders for these training sessions (all players and families should assume our Monday afternoon training will ALWAYS BE ON), however we will let you all know in ample time if we need to cancel a session due to weather or other factors.

Training Attire

Students should also be in proper training attire (NOT school sports uniform) with mouthguard, boots and any other equipment they play with for every training session, including school sport. This requirement also includes integrated school sport on Thursday i.e., students should wear our rugby training top or similar and not the school sport polo at this time. Alongside this, students should have a towel and spare school uniform to change into in case there is wet weather.

Stack Team APP

The Stack Team app will be our Rugby Union program’s main form of communication for all our squads, with exception of U12 boys.

As a reminder, both parents and Boy’s U13, U15, 1st XVs and 7’s and Girl’s 7s students who have parental permission for smartphones will need to download the app and join the Lindisfarne Rugby Program in the app.

To download the Stack team app, use the following links:

● iOS: https://www.teamapp.com/ios-ap...

● Android: https://www.teamapp.com/androi...

Once downloaded, please search for 'Lindisfarne Rugby Program' and request to join.

If you have any questions about the above, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Coyne (jcoyne@lindiisfarne.nsw.edu.au).

Horse Riding

Recreational Sport - Horse Riding

Years 7-10 Rec Sport students at Lindisfarne are fortunate to have horse riding as a sport option on Thursdays. I highly recommend trying out riding in Term 4 or next year. Horse riding takes place at Kyllarie Retreat, where the instructors are incredibly friendly and professional. Our time is split into two sessions - riding during which the instructors teach riding techniques and skills. It's an exciting experience, and you learn quickly. After just five weeks of horse riding at Kyllarie Retreat, I am now confident in trotting on my own, and I am looking forward to learning cantering by the end of the term. In the second half of the session, we learn about horse care, medical treatment, and riding equipment, including grooming, washing and preparing the horses. The learning is hands-on, and you get to spend a lot of time with the horses. I would recommend horse riding to anyone who is looking for a unique and exciting sport to try next term!

Refugee Week

As part of Refugee Week earlier this term we were fortunate enough to welcome Bryan and Penny from the Uki Refugee Project to speak to Year 10 Geographers about their work.

The Uki Refugee Project was formed 10 years ago and undertakes a variety of projects in an endeavour to help the plight of asylum seekers and refugees here in Australia and overseas. These are people who have fled their homelands because of violence and / or political persecution.

The Uki Refugee Project strongly advocates for human rights by lobbying our government and governments around the world to develop policies that support the fundamental right for every human being to live a life free from fear, harassment or discrimination. Alongside this the Project arranges Friendship weekends twice a year; local people open their homes and hearts to refugees from the Brisbane Romero Centre. Often thirty to forty refugees come and spend the weekend. A variety of activities are arranged; meals and music shared and friendships formed.

The Project warmly invites students to attend the next Friendship Weekend on the 7th and 8th of September in Uki and Kingscliff. More information below.

FRIENDSHIP WEEKEND
Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th September

Please join us in extending a warm welcome the refugees and asylum-seekers who will be visiting us soon. Each year we get such positive feedback from our visitors. They comment on how they value the warmth and friendliness that we offer them, here in the Tweed: how it gives them a real break away from the stresses of their lives.

It is only because we have help from so many of our generous supporters that these weekends are possible. We need YOU!

This year, we may have up to 35 visitors. The Romero Centre in Brisbane partners with us, and have told us that it will be mainly women and children from PNG, on humanitarian visas, fleeing domestic and inter / intra tribal violence which has increased in danger because of the modern weapons now being used.

BUSH DANCE
Playing Possum Bush Band
Saturday 7th Sep at 5.30pm Uki Hall

Last year, the bush dance was a very successful, joyous event!
Everyone joined in the dancing with energy and enthusiasm.
Please bring some food to share for a community dinner.
Label your food (we can label it for you),
so everyone knows what it is (veg, or gluten, or whatever).
The generous Uki Hall Committee is subsidising this event.

PICNIC at KINGSCLIFF
Sunday 8th Sep. From about 11am to 3pm
Ed Parker Park, near Cudgen Creek.
Plenty to do here: playing in the sand, paddling, maybe swimming depending on the weather is, kayaking (can you bring a kayak), walking along the boardwalk, games and dances on the grass.
Please bring some food to share for a picnic lunch.
We plan to have a sausage sizzle – so food to accompany such as salads or sandwiches.
Fruit, cake or something sweet too if you wish.
