Foreword

Dear Lindisfarne Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to the final term of the 2024 school year. I trust everyone enjoyed a restful break or at least a change of routine and the opportunity for rejuvenating activities and time with loved ones over the School holidays.

This week marked the commencement of HSC exams for our Year 12 students. This significant milestone is the culmination of their hard work and dedication throughout the year. We extend our best wishes to each student during this time of great focus and thank all staff and parents for the support of the class of 2024.

We are excited to announce a new partnership with Murwillumbah Rowing Club, establishing a new base for Lindisfarne Rowing. This collaboration, which I had the pleasure of signing today alongside club President Robert Gee, promises to enhance our rowing program substantially. Over the next three years, this partnership will allow our students to access top-level coaching and excellent facilities, fostering significant growth in the sport. Click here to view the announcement letter.

Commencing this Sunday, 20 October, we launch our Wellbeing Week with a Spiritual Gym Service at 4:30 pm for refreshments followed by a 5:00 pm service dedicated to World Peace. This year’s theme, "Be Active," encourages us all to engage in activities that enhance our holistic health—body, mind, and spirit.

Wellbeing Week has activities designed to suit various interests and abilities across both campuses. Wellbeing week will also see us host our second Staff vs Students Cricket match under the lights at Reg Dalton Fields on Tuesday, 22 October, from 4:30 pm.

To cap off Wellbeing Week, we will host a screening of the G-rated film Screenagers: Growing up in a Digital World on Friday, 25 October, at 6 PM in the Mahers Lane Chapel. This event mainly benefits parents and students from middle to senior secondary levels, offering practical solutions for navigating the digital world. Click here to preview the trailer for Screenagers.

On Tuesday, 22 October, I look forward to joining our senior school students in the induction service for the class of 2025 and the senior school leaders for the year ahead.

Next week, Mr. Jeremy Godden, Head of Junior School and Head of Lindisfarne International, will attend the LATAM 2024 International Education events in Bogata, Columbia, Lima, Peru and Santiago, Chile. Accompanied by Ms. Jenaya Mulley, Head of Enrolments and International Development, this significant international event will provide Lindisfarne with the opportunity to tap into the rapidly growing Latin American International Student market and is an initiative of Study NSW.

Diversification of international students will bring many benefits to Lindisfarne, enriching the cultural landscape and fostering a more globally connected learning environment. This initiative is part of the school’s strategic vision to broaden its international reach, creating valuable opportunities for students to engage in global partnerships and cultural exchanges.

Through our attendance, Lindisfarne seeks to showcase its commitment to providing a world-class education in one of Australia’s premier learning environments. Mr Godden and Ms Mulley’s attendance as part of the Study NSW delegation at LATAM 2024 is a significant step toward strengthening Lindisfarne's position in the international education sector, as well as strengthening relationships with education providers and related businesses in the region.

As we continue with the busy and exciting final term, I am inspired by the enthusiasm within our community. Let’s support our students through the weeks ahead, especially our Year 12s, as they complete their HSC exams.

Warm regards,

Stuart Marquardt

Chaplain's Corner

Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Guardians,

Last term, I wrote articles on each of our first two School Values - Compassion and Wisdom. In this article, I would like to draw your attention to our third Value - Respect.

I think the best place to start when thinking about respect is to consider the concept of the “imago Dei”, the image of God, within the Judeo-Christian tradition. It is actually my favourite theological topic as I did my Capstone on it for my first Masters and my Thesis on it for my second.

I learned that to truly appreciate what a radically liberating concept it is, we need to place it back within its original context of the Ancient Near Eastern world. In ancient Mesopotamia, known as the cradle of civilization, the concept of the image of the gods was reserved for the king, whilst everyone else was a slave to the gods and to their image bearer, the king. This was an absolutely oppressive regime for all but the very few.

It was from within this predominant worldview of oppression that came to the radically liberating concept that absolutely all of humanity bears the “imago Dei”, the image of God - regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, mental capacity, physical ability, social or economic status, political affiliation, or any other distinction imaginable - everyone, bears the image of God.

And so, historically speaking, this is where the recognition of universal human dignity and equality within our Western culture actually comes from - from the very first chapter of the Bible (Genesis 1:26-7).

Over eight billion people live on planet Earth today, which may cause us to think that as individuals, we can’t be that significant. However, the Judeo-Christian tradition insists that every human being is created by God with a unique story. That God created human beings as his image bearers means that, as humans, we have the unique distinction of being designed on the model of the creator of the universe. As such, we are God’s treasured ones.

At times, it is easy to forget that each person we encounter in our day-to-day lives is God’s handiwork and deserves to be treated with love, dignity and respect. We should, therefore, take note that those around us are also made in the image of God. That person sitting next to us in class, that face on social media, that opponent on the sporting field - all are made in God’s image, and God cherishes them all. They are all human beings and creations of God.

Knowing that we are all made in the image of God should prompt us to see value in others. God calls us to love one another. Seeing value in everyone is not the same as agreeing or being best friends with everyone. Instead, it means showing all respect through what we do and how we treat them.

Each person brings value to the world in which we live. We all have a purpose, and we should treat all people mindfully and with great respect because God has deemed them of value.

Treating others with dignity and respect entails treating others as having innate value.

The Bible encourages us to honour others above ourselves and to love one another. Treating others with respect and dignity is an excellent place to start.

In keeping with this spirit of respect for all humanity, I invite you to attend our Ecumenical and Interfaith prayer service for peace at Spiritual Gym this Sunday in the Chapel. Refreshments start from 4:30pm with the service going from 5.00 to 6.00pm. I hope to see you there.

Blessings,

The Reverend Lyndon Mulholland

The Round Square Heroes of Discovery

To coincide with Wellbeing Week at Lindisfarne in Week, we will be introducing our 11th Round Square Hero of Discovery, Self-aware Simba next week.

Self-aware Simba inspires students to be mindful, present, and reflective. By understanding their own emotions, values, strengths, and weaknesses, students are encouraged to make informed decisions and embrace personal growth. Simba encourages self-reflection, helping students to stay involved in their development and navigate challenges with confidence and purpose.

In classrooms across the Junior School, teachers will be sharing Simba’s Hero Story with students, sparking meaningful discussions on how we can embody these character traits in all aspects of our lives.

We are excited to see Self-aware Simba’s influence grow as students embrace his traits in the coming weeks. Together, we aim to foster self-awareness and thoughtful decision-making, helping students make a positive impact on the world!

Bush Preschoolers Become Citizen Scientists

This week, our Bush Preschool students became citizen scientists as they explored Fingal Headland and recorded local birdlife for the Aussie Bird Count. The Aussie Bird Count is a yearly week-long citizen science event where participants record the birds in their local area through a 20-minute bird count. This data is gathered to help track bird populations and movements across Australia. Our Bush Preschoolers took part in three bird counts which recorded 19 species in total. This included well-known species like the Australian Magpie and lesser-known species like the Grey Shrikethrush. Through the process, our Bush Preschool students learned about our local birdlife and what can be done to protect them. The Aussie Bird Count runs until the 20th of October. You can learn more about the Aussie Bird Count or see how to get involved here.

FUN Swimming Carnival K-2

All Kindergarten to Year 2 students will be participating in a Fun Swimming Carnival, on FRIDAY 15th November, which includes a variety of races and novelty events at Kingscliff Pool.

The day is all about FUN and water orientation. The novelty events are in the learn to swim pool where the students are able to touch the bottom and gain confidence in the water and around others. The “races” are participation only, there are no results times or awards given out. Students are assisted in the pool by adults and get the experience of swimming laps in the ‘Big” pool. This is a fantastic precursor for our Year 2 students as they transition to the Swimming Carnivals in years to come.

Parental Assistance is required on this day, if you are able to assist either in the pool or helping with the BBQ please email Mr Nathan Croft via email ncroft@lindisfarne.nsw.edu.au.

We would like to have at least 2 adults per lane per hour in the big pool which equates to 12 people per hour, this makes an enormous difference to the smooth running of the day.

Three ways parents can assist are as follows:

  1. In Pool Help - Required to be in the Big pool or Learn to swim pool assisting the students in races or games.

1 hour time slots in the big pool.

11am - 12pm

12pm - 13pm

13pm - 14pm

1. Class Help - Follow a class to each activity and assist Teacher where required.

2.BBQ Help - Assist the P&F to cook and serve the BBQ Lunch.

World Food Day: Connecting Global Themes to Our Kitchen Garden Program

This week, the Junior School celebrated World Food Day, an annual event that promotes awareness about global hunger and the need for fair and sustainable food systems. This year’s theme, “The Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future,” focuses on the fundamental right of all people to access nutritious food and how this can create a healthier and more sustainable world for future generations.

At Lindisfarne, this theme aligns perfectly with the values we promote through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Our students have been actively planting, tending, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh produce. This hands-on approach helps them learn about plant life and nutrition but also the importance of sustainable food systems. By growing their own vegetables, students understand where their food comes from, the importance of reducing food waste, and how making small choices today has a big impact on our environment tomorrow.

As a school community, we can continue supporting this vital message by promoting healthy eating habits, reducing food waste, and encouraging gardening at home. Together, we can ensure that all children have the opportunity to enjoy the right to food—today and tomorrow.

Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

As we embark on this new term, it is important to recognise the sense of renewal that comes with it - a fresh start and a chance to refocus our energies on what lies ahead. The beginning of the term presents a valuable opportunity for all of us to recommit to our work, both in the classroom and beyond, with renewed rigour and dedication. It is a chance to take stock, avoid the temptation of falling into old habits, and embrace the possibility of growth and achievement.

We have a busy and exciting term ahead. For our Year 12 students, this is a pivotal moment as they sit their HSC exams and take the final steps in their secondary education journey. Their hard work and perseverance throughout the year have led them to this point, and now is the time to focus and give their absolute best effort.

For our Year 11 students, the start of this term marks their transition into their final year of studies. This is a critical time, as they begin to assume the leadership roles that will shape their final year at Lindisfarne. As new leaders, they will set the tone for the student body and begin to leave their legacy.

Meanwhile, our Year 10 students have much to look forward to as they prepare for Work Experience and their highly anticipated Year 10 Dinner Dance. These opportunities provide valuable real-world experiences, allowing students to develop important life skills as they approach the latter part of their schooling.

For our Year 9 students, this term sees the culmination of their Rite Journey program. It is a time of reflection, as they draw their year-long journey to a close, having gained insights into themselves and their place in the world. The Rite Journey has helped to foster their personal growth, and we look forward to seeing how these lessons will carry forward into their senior years.

As we move into this term, let us all commit to embracing the challenges and opportunities it brings. Whether we are working towards a major milestone or simply aiming to be the best version of ourselves, now is the time to step up, lean in, and give it our all. By doing so, we can ensure that this term is one of meaningful progress and positive outcomes for everyone.

Head of Senior School

Wellio - Term 4

As we begin Term 4 and commence Wellbeing Week, students in Years 9 to 12 will be covering a range of relevant topics in the pastoral care space. By engaging in discussions across tutor groups, facilitated by short videos, polls and hypothetical situations, we hope to enable open dialogue around issues that are relevant to the lives of our young people. I encourage families to continue these conversations at home, around the dinner table or during a car ride home, to enable open discourse.

As our Year 11 students receive their exam results over the next fortnight, it is important to discuss how to view failure constructively and help them understand that it is an opportunity to learn and grow for the future. Young people are never defined by a subject or a number, although there are often small adjustments that can be made that lead to positive academic outcomes.

Week 1-2: Reframing Failure

Week 3-4: Alcohol Dependence & Excessive Drinking

Week 5-6: Keeping Your Online Data Safe

Week 7: Caring for Your Mental Health

If you would like any further resources on these topics or would like to discuss any aspects, please do not hesitate to get in touch. The final parent webinar of the year will be:

Thursday 31st October 6:30pm Resilience & Setbacks

Parents can register to attend the session HERE and additional materials are available HERE.

Year 10 Commerce Students Gear Up for Independence

As part of the Year 10 Commerce program's topic, Towards Independence, our students had the unique opportunity to participate in a hands-on lesson with members of our skilled maintenance team, Justin and Joe. This lesson focused on essential car maintenance skills that are vital for independent living.

During the session, students learned how to:

  • Change a tyre: An invaluable skill for any driver, giving them confidence in case of emergencies.

  • Check the car’s oil: Ensuring the car runs smoothly and avoiding potential engine damage.

  • Understand what parts of the car bonnet are safe to touch: A practical look under the hood to identify key components and avoid harm.

Students were also directed to the NRMA Free2go roadside assistance program, which provides up to 2 years’ free roadside assistance for 16-20 year olds for everything from flat tyres and batteries to locked in keys or an empty petrol tank.

This experience not only equipped the students with important practical skills but also reinforced the importance of being self-reliant and informed when it comes to vehicle maintenance. Special thanks to Justin and Joe for their time and expertise. Our students are now one step closer to being independent young adults!

Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition

Congratulations to Roger Kircher in Year 11 who has been selected as one of ten NSW finalists in the Plan Your Own Enterprise competition. Students were asked to create a plan for a hypothetical and creative business idea, with Roger proposing the inclusion of mandated green space above high rise buildings on the Gold Coast, known as Sky Harvest. Roger will travel to Sydney to pitch his idea to a panel of experts at the Chartered Accountants of Australia and New Zealand offices - Shark Tank style.

Touch Football QLD All Schools

The Lindisfarne Touch Football teams participated in the QLD All Schools Touch Football Carnival held at the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre over the school holidays. Running since 1983, this competition is the largest Touch Carnival in the world with over 8000 participants and 500 school teams registered for the 2024 event. Our U13 Girls, U15 Girls and U15 Boys sides made a statement on the first day of competition, with each finishing their 3 games undefeated. Their strong start set high hopes for the remainder of the tournament. However, as the competition intensified, the teams faced some challenging matches, resulting in several losses. Ultimately, they just missed out on escaping the pool phase and playing finals day.

Our Open Mixed team was mostly played with 4 girls and 2 boys on the field as opposed to the standard 3 boys and 3 girls. This was a valuable learning experience for the side, and it showed improvement throughout the tournament.

As the senior touch football season comes to a close, we reflect on the progress made this year. With an eye toward 2025, we are eager to improve the touch program and come back stronger. For new participants who would like to get involved, stay tuned to the sports welcome letter early in the year for more details.

For our junior years players in Years 3-6, there are still plenty of exciting events on the horizon in the coming weeks. We look forward to seeing their continued growth and success on the field.

Lindisfarne Volleyball Teams Shine at NCIS Tournament

On Wednesday, 16 October, four Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School teams proudly represented the school at the NCIS Volleyball Tournament in Port Macquarie. Competing in both the Opens and Under 15s divisions, our boys and girls teams showcased their passion, teamwork, and determination in what was a thrilling day of high-level competition.

The Under 15 Boys and Girls teams truly stole the spotlight, both emerging victorious and claiming the coveted gold medals. Their outstanding performances earned them the title of NCIS champions, a testament to their dedication and hard work in training.

The Open Boys team delivered a strong showing as well, finishing in an impressive second place. Despite some fierce competition, their resilience and sportsmanship were on full display throughout the day. The Open Girls team also demonstrated significant growth, playing with heart and determination, even though the competition proved to be too tough.

This experience not only highlighted our students' volleyball skills but also served as invaluable preparation for the upcoming Australian Volleyball Schools Cup in December. Congratulations to all our players and coaches for their remarkable efforts, and best of luck as we continue to build toward future success!

Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Expedition

In a remarkable journey, as the first Lindisfarne students to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award expedition, we—Ruby, Maia, Lois, Ella, Olivia, Shatrah, Thomas, and Braden—embarked on a challenging and unforgettable adventure on Maria Island, Tasmania. Known as the “Lindisfarne Pioneers,” our group travelled from Gold Coast Airport to Hobart with the support of teachers Mr Alterator, Mrs Archer, and Mrs Harrison, whose guidance made the experience truly enriching.

Our time on Maria Island was filled with both physical challenges and historical immersion. We stayed in a former convict penitentiary, feeling connected to Australia’s past in a uniquely tangible way. Hiking to the summit of Bishop & Clerk was both demanding and rewarding, with breathtaking views awaiting us at the top. We also trekked the inland track from Darlington to Encampment Cove, gaining an appreciation for Tasmania’s rugged beauty and developing resilience. Watching the sunset over the convict ruins was a powerful experience that seemed to bring the island’s history to life, as was the breathtaking experience of witnessing the Aurora Australis on a cloudless night devoid of light pollution.

A highlight of the trip was the chance to see an array of native wildlife up close. We encountered many friendly wombats, a few elusive bilbies, the Cape Barren geese, large kangaroos and other native animals that made each moment even more special. On our return journey via the coastal track, the sights of the ocean and the Painted Cliffs capped off our experience with a sense of awe and accomplishment. After journeying to the north of Tasmania, our final day included a whitewater adventure down the ironically named Meander River, including both Grade 1 and 2 rapids.

Reflecting on our journey, we returned with lasting memories, deeper friendships, and a newfound appreciation for both our country’s natural wonders and historical heritage. This adventure has set the stage for future Lindisfarne students to pursue their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award with the same spirit of discovery and resilience.

‘Teens and Seens’ Poetry

This week a small group of budding poets in Year 10 had the opportunity to visit the senior citizens at BUPA to create connections, forge friendships and hone their storytelling and poetry skills. This was the first of four sessions in the ‘Teens and Seens’ program, which is facilitated by wonderful local poets at Everybody Now.

During our post session debrief students commented on the way that the senior citizens were able to make any of their past memories and experiences sound like an engaging story. They particularly noticed the way that they included immersive details, stretching out small moments of the story for effect. Hopefully students will be able to take this on board and use it to enhance their own storytelling whether it be through poetry, speaking or writing.

I can’t wait to see how the ‘Teens and Seens’ work together to create some epic poetry.

The Big Baraza Info

Save the Date: A Round Square Adventure Awaits

Are you going to be a Year 10, 11 or 12 student in 2025. Do you have a passion for global issues and a desire to make your voice heard? Round Square is thrilled to invite you to join us for an extraordinary event at the iconic Oxford Union debating chamber from April 12th-17th, 2025.

Experience Oxford, Engage in Dialogue

This isn't just a debating competition; it's an opportunity to develop essential skills in listening, oratory, and leadership. Through thought-provoking baraza discussions, you'll gain a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives on world issues and learn to articulate your own ideas with confidence and respect.

Step into the Footsteps of Great Minds

Join the ranks of renowned figures who have graced the Oxford Union's debating chamber, including Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Malala Yousafzai, and Mother Teresa. This is your chance to make a meaningful impact and contribute to global conversations.

Limited Places, Apply Now

Due to the chamber's capacity, participation is limited to 400 students from across the network. Accommodation will be provided in Oxford's prestigious colleges.

Exclusive Filmmaking Opportunity

Within the overall event experience, we have an extraordinary golden-ticket opportunity for six students from across the entire network of schools to work with a film production company to learn how to produce, film, and edit a short documentary about the event and the topics covered.

Students will be trained on key techniques vital for any successful film production including: the role of storytelling in film, the art of interviewing, shooting B-roll to capture the atmosphere and energy of the event, creative decision-making while filming, the basics of editing and organising footage into a cohesive story, before screening the film at the end of the conference.

These places will be selected via application process available to students who will be in Years 11 and 12 in 2025. To apply, students should prepare a statement of up to 500 words to explain why they would like to be considered for one of the places, and send it to Mr Lush, to upload along with a supporting letter from the school. It would be fabulous to have a student from Lindisfarne taking part.

Students will be invited to arrive in the UK on Thursday 10 April 2025 and will be met at the airport by a member of the Round Square Team who will take them to Oxford, where they will meet the other five film crew participants. Training will begin on Friday 11th April, so that the student film crew is ready to start capturing the event from arrivals on Saturday.

Beyond Oxford: A London Adventure

After the conference, enjoy two nights in London, exploring its historic landmarks and vibrant culture.

Key Details:

· Cost: Approx. $7,000 (includes flights, all meals at conference, accommodation, and activities)

· Dates: Approx. 11 - 21 April, 2025

· Application Deadline: Friday, October 25

Waste-Free Lunches

At Lindisfarne, we are working towards becoming a more sustainable school. We want our students to be conscious of the part we can all play in making a more sustainable world and the actions that we can all take to help our planet. This is why we strongly encourage students to have waste-free lunches at Lindisfarne.

Waste-free lunches use reusable items instead of single-use plastic or other disposable items. Having a waste-free lunch is fantastic for the environment as it reduces landfill and litter and saves natural resources. Waste-free lunches are also fantastic for parents too! Packing waste-free lunches for your kids will save you money as you no longer need to continually buy disposable plastic wrap and packaging for lunches.

Having a waste-free lunch is simple and easy. Plastics and disposable items can be replaced with more sustainable items that can be washed and reused again. This is great for the environment and ends up being cheaper for you. Please use the tips below to help you create great waste-free lunches.

Use What You Have: Reusable containers are fantastic for waste-free lunches and most families already have these containers at home. Make use of what you have and it may not be necessary to buy additional supplies. This will save you money and is also better for the environment.

Food Waste: Make sure only to pack as much food as your child will eat. Leftovers from dinner can also be put directly into lunch containers to save on food costs and reduce wastage.

Saving Time: Minimise the morning rush by packing lunches the night before. Get your kids to help with the packaging and making of their lunch. Studies have shown that children are much less likely to waste their food when they are involved in making it.

The table below can also be used as a helpful guide for making waste-free lunches.

OOSHC Spring Vacation Care

Our wonderful OOSCH family had lots of adventures and fun over the recent vacation break. Along with a plethora of craft, clay-making, painting, dress-up and sensory activities, students enjoyed excursions to Bounce, the Jellurgal Centre at Burleigh Heads and a guided tour of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. One group was treated to a special gardening session with Mrs Leary, creating their own flower printed tote bags and sunflower newspaper pots to take home. Fortunately, the rain held off for our popular inflatable sports day and wheel riding day. A big thank you to our passionate OOSHC educators and all the children who joined in on the fun. Feel free to reach out to Penny Moore if you are interested in booking in for the next holidays or Term time school care.
