Foreword

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In celebrating the annual Speech Days this week, we are reminded that the awards are not just about the award recipients. They are a testament to the extraordinary talent our students and staff possess across our school and act as recognition of individual and collective achievement. Our Speech days also act as a time of celebration as we give thanks and gratitude for the high standards, dedication, and community connections in our school and, importantly, highlight the tremendous value our staff, parents, and the Lindisfarne community place on all aspects of learning and education.

On behalf of the School Community, I congratulate the respective Dux and Proxime Accessit recipients.

For every student of the class of 2024, I hope that you will feel an enduring connection to Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School and that you forever feel part of this school and community, no matter where life might take you.

Remembering ‘that you never actually leave a school like Lindisfarne; you just stop attending every day.’

Head of Senior School Kate Cornell shared these heartfelt words to the class of 2024 at our Senior School Speech Day.

“As I reflect on the journey we have shared with the Class of 2024, I am struck by the profound impact you have had on our school community. You are a group defined by your courage, your compassion, and your commitment to excellence. It has been a privilege to witness your growth - not only as individuals, but as a collective who have shaped and enriched the spirit of Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School.

As you prepare to embark on the next chapter of your lives, know that you will carry with you the hopes, the pride, and the enduring support of this school. You leave behind a legacy of leadership, friendship, and inspiration, and we will always consider you part of the Lindisfarne community.

In recognition of your journey and the lasting mark you have left, we would like to present you with a small token of our gratitude.”

This is “People Like You” (VIDEO LINK), a beautiful tribute to the class of 2024 directed by Deputy Principal Mrs Charlotte Lush.

This year, we farewell long-serving staff member History Teacher Jan Makepeace, who will retire from Lindisfarne having given over 26 years of distinguished service to the School. Thank you Jan for your commitment and service to our community and the contribution you have made to the education of a generation of young people.

We also farewelled Director of Human Resources Mary-Ellen Jackman, who has faithfully served the School for the past 12 years and extended a heartfelt thank you for the dedicated service to our school community and the support provided to our staff.

Yesterday after an extensive search, supported by input and guidance from senior staff at Rowing Queensland, we announced the appointment of Mrs Tara Townsend as our Head of Rowing, commencing in 2025.

Mrs Townsend, a respected educator, brings a wealth of experience and a passion for rowing. A World Champion rower, she has excelled as both an athlete and a respected leader in rowing education. Most recently, she played a pivotal role in the St Joseph’s Nudgee College rowing program, helping to transform it from modest beginnings into a formidable force in competitive rowing.

This exciting announcement coincides with establishing our partnership with the Murwillumbah Rowing Club. This collaboration, first announced on 17 October, will provide our students access to high-quality facilities and resources, as well as increased opportunities for training, competition, and community engagement.

Scholarships for the 2026 school year are now open. Scholarships are offered for students entering Years 5, 7, 9 and 11 in 2026. Applications close on Friday, 14 February 2025. For more information, please read the Scholarship Information Booklet 2026.

Thank you to all members of our School community for your support throughout 2024 as we shared our ongoing Lindisfarne story and as we continued the important work to develop a world-class school for the children and families of the southern Gold Coast, Tweed Coast, and northern New South Wales.

I extend the very best wishes to all members of the school community for a safe and blessed Christmas and a very happy New Year.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;
And the government shall be upon his shoulder,
And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
- Isaiah 9:6

Dear Members of the Lindisfarne Community

Thank you to one and all

What makes Lindisfarne such a great faith and learning community is that so many people contribute their gifts and talents, as well as their love and dedication to nurturing the lives of young people in our care. Thank you to each and every one for the role you played this year in the successes and achievements of our wonderful school community. May the Lord bless and reward you as only he can.

A heartfelt gratitude to all our students, staff and families for your support with the 2024 ‘Christmas Giving Tree’ in aid of Tweed Women’s Refuge and Kids In Need (KIN), as well as for your support of Agape Outreach Centre in providing Christmas meals for those experiencing hardship and poverty this Christmas. Helping those in need in our community enables us to embody our school value of compassion, but also teaches us to use our privilege and good fortune for the good of others. Despite the recent economic hardship, your willingness to help those less fortunate than we are is heartwarming and greatly appreciated..

Reconciliation Action Plan Newsletter -’Unity Through Learning’

It is my pleasure to introduce the first edition of our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)’s Unity Through Learning Newsletter

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our First Nations Cultural Engagement Coordinator, Mrs. Katrina Singh, for gathering the stories and events that showcase our School’s unwavering commitment to reconciliation in Australia. Together, we strive to close the education gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

I also acknowledge the hard work of the RAP committee members, who have tirelessly implemented our commitments since the launch of our RAP document in May last year.

As a school grounded in Christian and Anglican values, we answer Christ’s call to be agents of God’s reconciliation, mercy, and love.

We remain dedicated to educating our students to be ambassadors of reconciliation, taking pride in the three strands of Australia’s epic story: Indigenous heritage, British inheritance, and multicultural triumph, as so wisely expressed by Noel Pearson.

Please join us in celebrating our RAP achievements, and let us continue to walk and work together toward building a more reconciled, loving, and compassionate Australian society.

Season’s Greetings

I wish you all a very blessed, happy and joyful Christmas and holiday season, and a new year 2025 filled with hope, good health and prosperity. To our Jewish brothers and sisters: a very happy and joyful Hanukkah celebration.

      LTV: Signing Off for 2024!

As we wrap up episodes 30 and 31, the final instalments of LTV for the year, we want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey this season has been. This year, LTV has once again celebrated the vibrant and dynamic spirit of Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School through engaging stories, creative segments, and memorable moments.

Episode 30 features a stunning highlight video from this year’s unforgettable Year 12 Formal. From elegant arrivals to joyful dancing, this episode captures the magic of one of the most significant milestones for our graduating class.

A huge thank you to our amazing team who made this possible. To our hosts, including the School Captains, who brought their charisma and professionalism to every episode. To our editors, interviewers, and social media coordinator, your hard work behind the scenes ensured that we had a lot of quality content - 57 segments in total!

      Junior School

      Head of Junior School

As we close the chapter on the 2024 academic year at Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School, it is with immense pride that we celebrate the achievements, growth, and milestones of our students at Sunshine Avenue. Yesterday, we concluded the year with the ceremonial ringing of the bell for our departing Year 4 students. This cherished tradition marks their transition to Middle School, and we wish them every success as they embark on this exciting new chapter.

This year has been an exceptional one, filled with new initiatives and milestones that have enriched our students’ educational experiences. The Round Square Heroes of Discovery program has been a standout highlight, fostering the values of responsible and compassionate global citizenship while inspiring our students to embrace learning and personal growth. This week, we celebrated a successful first year of Heroes of Discovery with our very first Hero Day on Wednesday. Having embraced this program so emphatically, the students enjoyed an extended lunch packed with games, activities, and, perhaps most importantly on a hot day, a refreshing ice block prize. A special thank you goes to Mrs Mundy for her outstanding leadership of this initiative and to the teachers for their whole-hearted implementation of the program across the Junior School.

In 2024, we also celebrated the opening of two wonderful facilities: the refurbished Performing Arts Centre, now a vibrant hub of creativity, and the Outdoor Kitchen Classroom, which has transformed hands-on learning opportunities, particularly in sustainability and health. These projects were made possible through the generous contributions of our Parents and Friends (P&F) Association, and we are deeply grateful for their unwavering support.

Throughout the year, our commitment to holistic education has been evident in the wide range of experiences offered to our students. From sports competitions and service-learning projects to artistic performances, our students have thrived.

Equally significant are the events that bring our community together. From International Women’s Day and the Mother’s Day Morning Tea to the Big Boys’ Breakfast, Grandparents’ Day, the Easter Hat Parade, the Nativity Play, and the ELC Concert, these moments have strengthened our bonds and created cherished memories. It is through these shared experiences that we remain connected and united in our mission to nurture young people who are ready to take on the world.

This week’s Speech Day was a magnificent occasion where we gathered as a community to celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of our students. It was a day filled with pride and joy as we recognised the hard work, perseverance, and exceptional talents that each student has brought to our school this year. This annual event is always a highlight, and the musical performances were a true gift, especially the finale number, which featured all of our Year 1 to Year 4 students. Congratulations to all our award winners, it was wonderful to see their dedication and accomplishments acknowledged in such a special way.

As we celebrate our 2024 successes, we also take a moment to thank our amazing teachers for their incredible efforts in wrapping up the year. One of the many tasks they have taken on is the highly complex job of formulating class lists for next year. This process requires careful thought and collaboration to ensure the best outcomes for all students. We encourage families to trust the teachers’ judgment and decisions and to view the new year and new classes as opportunities—opportunities to meet new people, make new friends, and experience new adventures in learning and personal growth.

With mixed feelings at this time of year, we also bid farewell to some valued staff members. A special farewell goes to Mrs Laura Gallagher, Assistant Head of Junior School, as she embarks on her next professional step as Deputy Principal/Head of Junior School at Fraser Coast Anglican College in 2025. Mrs Gallagher will be greatly missed for her calm and caring leadership and her passion for holistic education. We wish her and her family all the best in this exciting new chapter.

We also thank and say farewell to Mrs Noni Mellis, who has been the classroom teacher for 3N in Semester 2 while Mrs Nixon has been on maternity leave. Mrs Mellis won’t be a stranger, as she will return in 2025 in a casual capacity, and we are deeply grateful for her wonderful service this semester. Additionally, we bid farewell to Mrs Emma Blaike, who will take some much-deserved leave in 2025. While she will be undertaking casual work during this time, we thank her for her contributions and look forward to seeing her around the campus.

Finally, a special mention to Sue Hammond and Alison Holzhauser, who have stepped into new administrative duties during Term 4. Their support and organisation during this busy period have been invaluable, and we are incredibly appreciative of their efforts.

In the conclusion of our amazing 2024, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and enthusiastic students who make Sunshine Avenue a vibrant and inspiring place of learning and growth. Together, we have achieved so much, and I look forward to all that 2025 will bring.

On behalf of the Sunshine Avenue community, I wish you and your families a safe, joyful, and blessed Christmas. May your holiday season be filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Our K-4 students celebrated with an extended lunch break, icy poles, big games and a dance party out in the Music Garden.

A heartfelt thank you to our students, teachers, and families for wholeheartedly embracing the Round Square Heroes of Discovery program throughout 2024. Your enthusiasm and support have been instrumental in bringing this initiative to life.

ELC End of Year Celebration: "Commotion in the Ocean"

What an incredible way to wrap up the year! Our Early Learning Centre (ELC) End of Year Celebration, Commotion in the Ocean, was a spectacular showcase of creativity, talent, and teamwork. Every Preschool and Kindergarten student took to the stage with enthusiasm, bringing the underwater world to life with vibrant costumes, joyful songs, and captivating performances.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the masterminds behind this event, Mrs. Kim Shepherd and Mr. Jesse Edwards. Their hard work, creativity, and dedication ensured that Commotion in the Ocean was not only a feast for the eyes but also a memorable and enriching experience for our young performers. From scripting to choreography, every detail reflected their passion for creating meaningful learning experiences.

This event was a fitting conclusion to a year filled with growth, discovery, and joy. From our classrooms to the stage, our children have blossomed in so many ways, embracing challenges and celebrating achievements. The smiles and laughter we saw during the performance were a testament to the wonderful community of learners, families, and educators we are privileged to have.

As we say goodbye to a fantastic year, we want to thank all our families for their ongoing support and involvement in our school community. Your partnership has been invaluable in making 2024 such a success.

On behalf of everyone at the ELC, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May your holidays be filled with love, laughter, and precious moments with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2025 for another exciting year of learning and growing together!

Stage 1 Nativity Chapel: “Remembering Christmas”

On Monday, 25th November, Stage 1 students presented a heartfelt performance of Remembering Christmas under the direction of Mrs Kim Sheperd. Year 2 had been rehearsing diligently for weeks, preparing to share the Nativity story through fresh perspectives, including the shepherds, innkeepers, and angels. Their dedication shone as every student embraced their role, even our delightful barnyard chickens and pigs.

Year 1 provided beautiful support by singing carols, adding to the reverence of the Chapel service. This memorable event was a true team effort, and we extend our gratitude to the many contributors. Miss Tammy Willis transformed simple cardboard boxes into stunning inns, while Mrs Sue Hammond skilfully crafted shepherd costumes, all while settling into her new role at the school. Special thanks go to Mr Jesse Edwards, whose patience and encouragement helped bring out the best in every child.

This was a truly special performance, made unforgettable by the enthusiasm, dedication, and teamwork of our Stage 1 students.

      School Holiday Activities

Keeping little people busy and happy during long car trips or rainy days at home over the holidays can be a challenge. Particularly if you want to keep the kids (mostly) screen free.

      Check out some podcasts!

Common Sense Media is a great way to search for age-appropriate content https://www.commonsensemedia.org/lists/great-podcasts-to-listen-to-as-a-family

There are podcasts on Science, History, Nature, Music, Adventure stories and lots of others for curious little kids (and big ones!). Our family favourites were BrainsOn! and Smash Boom Best.

Also don’t forget the local libraries (both NSW and QLD) have audio books available for download. Don’t fear, the quality of children’s literature today is very good and you will most likely enjoy the stories too (if headphones aren’t an option)!

Common Sense Media can also guide you through choosing age appropriate books, movies, TV shows, and games so it is worth checking out the website.

Enjoy a safe and relaxing break.

      Bush Preschool

Term 4 has been an incredible celebration of community, connection, and discovery here at Bush Preschool. We've had a jam-packed end to the year, filled with outdoor adventures, environmental learning, and important cultural connections.

One of the highlights of the term was our bush regeneration project in collaboration with Fingal Head Coastcare. Our students helped plant paper daisy plants on the headland, which they had propagated earlier in the year during Term 1. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to see how their hard work has contributed to the local environment, and we’re excited to watch the plants thrive in the coming seasons.

In another significant experience, our Bush Buddies had the privilege of connecting with the Tweed Byron Local Aboriginal Land Council. With the guidance of Elders and Rangers, the children learned about local places of cultural significance, the unique flora and fauna of our area, and the deep connections to Country that Indigenous people have nurtured for generations. This was a powerful learning experience that helped the children develop a deeper respect for the land and its history.

A heartwarming moment this term was our Bush Preschool graduation celebration. It was a beautiful gathering of families and the community, as we came together to celebrate the achievements of our young learners. The ceremony was a lovely reminder of how far our children have come, and how much they’ve grown through their nature-based learning journey.

To end the year with a splash, we took a special excursion to the Marine Discovery Centre at Hastings Point. Here, the children explored marine ecosystems and interacted with hands-on displays that sparked curiosity and learning about the fascinating underwater world. This was followed by field trips to a tea tree billabong and mangroves, where the children observed and interacted with these unique ecosystems, gaining a deeper understanding of local biodiversity.

It has truly been an incredible year of nature-based learning, connection, and discovery, and we are so proud of everything the children have experienced and achieved. Thank you to all our families, community partners, and supporters for making this year such a memorable one!

      Middle School Speech Day Celebration

This week, in our final days of the school year, we gathered as a Middle School community for our annual Middle School Speech Day. It was a wonderful celebration of the dedication, achievements, and resilience of our students.

Speech Day provided an opportunity to reflect on the year that has passed and to acknowledge the exceptional efforts of our students across academic, sporting, cultural, and service-learning domains. Proud parents, guardians, teachers, and students came together to honour the hard work and accomplishments of our young learners.

The highlight was undoubtedly the presentation of awards, recognising excellence and effort in a wide range of areas. It was inspiring to see so many students being acknowledged, each representing the values of commitment, perseverance, and a love of learning. These moments serve as a reminder of the breadth of talent within our Middle School and the spirit of excellence that underpins everything we do.

Of course, no celebration is complete without the support of our dedicated teachers and staff, who have been instrumental in guiding and encouraging our students throughout the year. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to our families for their unwavering support, which plays a vital role in our students' success.

Congratulations to all our students for their achievements this year, and we look forward to seeing what 2025 will bring.

End-of-Year Wishes and 2025 Start Dates

As the school year comes to a close, I want to thank all our families for their support throughout 2024. It has been a year of growth and achievement, and we are grateful for the partnership that makes our school community so strong.

I encourage all students to take a moment to reflect on the year that has passed, celebrating their successes in achieving their goals and considering adjustments or new goals for the future. It's remarkable to think that in less than two months, they will move into the next stage of their education. With each step forward, they will gain new experiences, further develop their skills, and build on the foundation they’ve already established.

Holidays offer a valuable opportunity to rest, recharge, and prepare for the upcoming school year. They are also a special time to connect with family and friends, cherishing the moments spent together. As a community, we have much to be grateful for, and this season provides a chance to reflect on our blessings and consider meaningful ways to support those who are less fortunate.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe, restful holiday. The School office will reopen on 6 January 2025, and we look forward to welcoming students back for the start of Term 1 on Monday, 3 February 2025.

Enjoy the break, and we look forward to seeing you in the new year

Embracing Swedish Wellbeing - Tech-Free and Outdoors This Holiday Season

As the festive season approaches, there’s no better time to reflect on what truly brings us joy and balance. The Swedish principles of wellbeing, often centred on simplicity, connection, and nature, offer a refreshing perspective. Known for their holistic approach to health, Swedes embrace practices like friluftsliv—a love of the outdoors—and lagom, which means "just the right amount." These ideals remind us to slow down, unplug, and savor life's simple pleasures.

This year, I’m making a conscious effort to embrace these principles myself. Ahead of the holidays, I’ve decided to delete a few apps from my phone and limit my time on screens. Instead, I’m focusing on planning outdoor adventures with my two boys, who never fail to remind me of the joy of exploring and discovering. From exploring the mangroves along the Tweed River to exploring the Rail Trail, we’re making clear plans to spend quality, tech-free time together.

One of the best ways to recharge and reconnect with loved ones is by taking a break from screens. A tech-free holiday doesn't mean going completely off the grid; it means being mindful about how we spend our time. Swapping screen time for outdoor adventures can boost physical health, reduce stress, and create lasting memories. Why not take a hike to see the magical glow worms at Springbrook National Park in the Gold Coast hinterland or explore the stunning Currumbin Rock Pools? Pack a picnic and enjoy the breathtaking views at Burleigh Head National Park, take a leisurely family bike ride along the coastal paths or climb to the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse for sunrise. From hikes and picnics to splashing in rock pools, there’s no shortage of ways to unplug and enjoy nature together in the beautiful place we all call home.

This is also what the school holidays are about—creating time and space for reflection, renewal, and connection. Nature provides the perfect setting for this, helping us disconnect from the pressures of daily life and reconnect with ourselves and others. Fresh air and greenery have been shown to improve mood and concentration. By stepping away from screens and stepping into nature, we can make these holidays truly special.

This Christmas, let’s take inspiration from Swedish wellbeing by focusing on quality time with our families. Consider organising tech-free zones or times, such as screen-free dinners or outdoor family activities. Encourage everyone to be fully present, sharing stories, laughter, and the joy of togetherness.

The holidays are a time to pause, reflect, and cherish what matters most. By stepping away from our screens and stepping into nature, we can create a season filled with meaningful moments. Wishing you and your family a holiday season full of love, joy, and the beauty of shared experiences.

      Ella Clarke - National Champion

We are thrilled to share some incredible news about Ella’s recent achievements in Physie. Last weekend Ella competed at the Australian Physie & Dance Championships in Sydney, and we are delighted to announce that she won her age group. Her performance on stage was truly outstanding, with every move executed to perfection.

This remarkable victory comes on the heels of another significant milestone for Ella. Just the weekend prior, she competed in the BJP Physie Nationals at Homebush, reaching the finals—a remarkable feat.

Ella’s hard work, dedication, and talent have shone brightly on the national stage, and we couldn’t be prouder of her.

Year 5 and 6 Christmas Activity

This year, Year 5 and 6 students dove into the festive season with a variety of Christmas-themed activities focused on the Christmas story. The students were encouraged to explore the meaning of Christmas and express their understanding in imaginative and collaborative ways.

With a selection of activities to choose from, students displayed creativity and teamwork as they worked on designing board games, crafting advent calendars, creating quizzes, and writing their own Christmas news stories. The opportunity to decide which activity to pursue sparked enthusiasm, allowing students to align their work with their personal interests and skills.

In small groups or working individually, the students showcased exceptional effort and thoughtfulness. The board games included intricate designs and rules inspired by the nativity story, while the advent calendars featured heartfelt messages and beautifully illustrated doors. The quizzes tested knowledge of the Christmas story, challenging classmates in a fun and educational way. Meanwhile, the Christmas news stories brought a modern twist to the nativity narrative, demonstrating both creativity and humour.

Teachers were impressed by the high standard of work produced, noting how the students embodied love and compassion throughout the process. Groups supported each other with kindness, offering constructive feedback and ensuring that everyone’s ideas were heard and valued.

The classroom buzzed with energy and excitement as the students engaged in their tasks. Laughter, focus, and the spirit of Christmas filled the air, creating a joyful and memorable experience for all involved.

Overall, the activity not only deepened the students’ understanding of the Christmas story but also fostered essential values of teamwork, respect, and creativity. It was a festive highlight and a true celebration of the season’s message of love and hope.

      Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

I am filled with a sense of pride and gratitude for the achievements of the Senior School this year. It has been a year of growth, challenge, and transformation - one that reflects our unwavering commitment to excellence and our shared vision for a strong, values-driven culture.

This year, we have not only maintained our high standards but also raised the bar. We began the year with a clear focus: building a thriving Senior School environment that nurtures every student’s potential while instilling in them the values of Compassion, Wisdom, and Respect. Throughout the months, these ideals have been brought to life through countless initiatives, programs, and moments of collective achievement.

From our proactive stance on addressing issues like social media’s influence and the challenges of cyberbullying to celebrating the triumphs of initiatives such as the RRISK program, we have equipped our students with the tools to navigate an increasingly complex world. The Rite Journey, school camps, and wellbeing programs have strengthened their resilience and encouraged them to reflect deeply on their own growth and contributions to the community.

Our commitment to leadership has also been a defining feature of 2024. Through our formal leadership programs and informal opportunities to influence and inspire, our students have embraced the challenge of leading by example. They have demonstrated that leadership is not about holding a title but about service, integrity, and action. This was evident in their response to complex societal issues, such as gender equity, respect in relationships, and the challenges of navigating adolescence in the digital age. These moments of learning and leadership have fortified our shared belief that each student can, and will, make a positive impact on the world.

It has also been a year where we have celebrated excellence in its many forms - on the stage, in classrooms, and on the sporting field. From the creativity displayed in Germinate Records and our musical production of Mamma Mia! to the discipline and determination evident in the HSC Trial Examinations and sporting achievements, our students have continually risen to the challenge.

2024 has not been without its challenges. We have confronted difficult topics, from the lingering effects of harmful societal influences to the sometimes-uncomfortable conversations about bullying, self-discipline, and accountability. Yet, it is through these discussions and shared efforts that we have grown stronger. We have affirmed that high standards and high care go hand in hand - that our expectations for our students to meet challenges with integrity and grit are matched by our support for them every step of the way.

As we prepare to welcome 2025, I am optimistic. We are building a culture that not only celebrates individual achievement but thrives on collective success. Our students are learning that growth requires effort, that failure is a stepping stone to success, and that their journey is as important as the destination.

Looking ahead, we are excited about new opportunities to enrich the Senior School experience further. We will continue to innovate in our academic programs, deepen our focus on wellbeing, and provide even more avenues for leadership and growth. I am confident that the strong foundations we have laid this year will support us as we step into the new year.

To our families, thank you for your partnership. To our students, thank you for your commitment. Together, we are creating a Senior School that not only reflects our aspirations but inspires us to reach even greater heights.

      Merry Christmas!

      Kate Cornell
      Head of Senior School

      From the Dean of Students

For many years, the Year 10 Formal (Dinner Dance) has been a rite of passage for countless young New South Wales students celebrating the achievement of their School Certificate. Issued up until 2011, each student was required to study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Australian Civics and Citizenship and PDHPE every year in Years 7-9. Each course was also supposed to include a degree of computer use, so students became familiar with that technology. Alongside these subjects, 7-9 students must also have studied courses in Creative Arts (Visual Arts and Music), Technology and Applied Studies and a Language Other Than English. Electives were also required: students had a choice of these additional studies according to the courses which were available at their school.

The culmination of all this study was the Year 10 Formal. With many students leaving school to take up trades and other forms of employment, it was a chance for the cohort to meet together for one last time. In 2024 most students remain at school for their senior studies, but it is nonetheless a great opportunity to celebrate the transition from Stage 5 to 6 - and it is a great tradition at Lindisfarne.

Last Friday was a fantastic evening to be a part of. From the spectacular drop offs to the stunning suits and dresses, it was hard to find a student without a huge smile on their face. Without phones, students enjoyed each other's company and were able to positively connect for a few hours with their friends and teachers. A huge thanks to the staff who helped to make it such a memorable evening, along with the excellent staff from Seagulls.

On another note, it is a great privilege to announce our Stage 6 Service Learning trip to Hope Vale, Cooktown in 2025 in collaboration with the Cape York Institute. The mission was sparked by Mr Noel Pearson's visit to Lindisfarne earlier in 2024, and we look forward to taking some of our Stage 6 students to learn about and experience Indigenous culture firsthand. Our new school song implores students to embody a culture of doing by the values we live and breathe each day. We pray that our students can learn that wisdom is a lifelong journey, and it's not what you take, but how you choose to give.

I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It has been great partnering with you in 2024 as we work together to support and nurture our young people as they grow and thrive.

      Market Day Article Indie Trewhitt

On Wednesday the 20th of November, Year 9 Commerce students hosted a Market Day for the school community. Parents, students, and teachers were all invited to attend and admire Year 9’s hard work in designing, manufacturing, and running a successful business. Year 9 commerce students collaborated in creating an unforgettable experience for customers as well as ourselves; we enjoyed taking on responsibility and selling products that we curated ourselves. Some of the products sold include tie-dye socks, printed tee shirts, dried flower bouquets, customised sunglasses, men's fragrances, hair texture spray, lip scrubs, slime, fidgets, jewellery, detailed ceramics, candles, and more. Fortunately, with the help of all visitors who attended market day held in O Commons, most groups sold out, creating a profit for and confirming a very successful Market Day.

Celebrating the End of Year with Japanese Culture

As the school year draws to a close, our Japanese language students have been busy engaging in creative and cultural activities to celebrate their learning and the festive season.

Year 9 students embraced two hands-on projects. First, they tried their hand at making a traditional Japanese Christmas cake. This delightful dessert features a soft vanilla sponge layered with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, embodying a light and festive treat enjoyed by many in Japan. Alongside this, they crafted beautiful kokedama planters, which translate to "moss balls." These unique and eco-friendly planters allowed students to connect with Japanese gardening traditions while creating a piece of nature to take home.

Year 11 students reflected on their aspirations for the future by creating small kanji canvases. Each student selected a kanji character that symbolized a dream, goal, or vision for 2025. These meaningful artworks not only showcased their growing kanji knowledge but also served as personal keepsakes to display at home, inspiring them as they move forward.

These activities brought the spirit of Japanese culture into our classrooms, allowing students to immerse themselves in traditions that combine creativity, reflection, and celebration. A big thank you to everyone involved for making the end of the year so memorable!

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year - may you all stay safe and enjoy this special time with family and friends. Hopefully we see you all rejuvenated, and read to roll around again in 2025!

We are still pushing ahead next week, with the final mega-event of the year - The Australian Schools Volleyball Cup. A full week of games for four of our team played on the Northern Gold Coast, finishing up Sunday 15 December. Best of luck to our teams, the ASVC is arguably the biggest sport event on the calendar for us in terms of team volumes and logistics.

2025 Term 1 Integrated Sports Selections

Term 1 sports selections will open on January 21 - at 7pm, via Clipboard and will close on Monday 27 January - at 8am. There is obviously considerable work to be done before we finalise completed rolls, timetables, staffing and bus logistics in readiness for the 6 February Integrated Sport start date.

All students need to make a selection - no students will have their sports automatically filled.

You can also view the Sport Selection Options linked below.

      English

      English 2024

This year, our English students demonstrated remarkable learning and academic resilience as they embraced the challenges and rewards of their studies. The teaching team worked tirelessly to nurture and support learners, guiding them through the intricacies of diverse texts and encouraging them to think critically and creatively.

From the profound insights of Indigenous voices to the timeless works of Shakespeare, our students explored a range of literature, discovering connections between texts, cultures, and their own experiences. These journeys were not without challenge, but our learners approached each challenge with determination and a growth mindset.

As we reflect on this year’s achievements, we extend our gratitude to our families for their ongoing partnership with our English classrooms. Together, we’ve fostered a community of inquiry, reflection, and growth. We eagerly anticipate continuing these connections in 2025 as we inspire the next generation of thinkers, readers, and writers.

It would be remiss of me not to express my gratitude to the tireless efforts of Ms Emily Brewer as the English Coordinator and our teaching team who go above and beyond every day to deliver exceptional lessons to engage and develop our students: Ms Julia Treacy, Mrs Bec McLeish, Mrs Rikki Hunter, Mr Tom Davies, Miss Aliah Whitesides, Miss Katie Wainwright, Mrs Kelly Twyford, Mrs Leona Konik, Mrs Georgia Artmann, Mr John Cadman, Mrs Katy Otto, Mr Jasper Schoenmaker and Mrs Cathy Myers. Working with a team of dedicated and enthusiastic teachers brings joy every day.

ConnectEd: Preparing for a Balanced Digital Future

As we wrap up the year and head into the holiday season, it’s a great time for families to reflect on screen time and social media habits. When students return in 2025, they will do so under new laws introduced by the Australian government. The Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024, effective next year, prohibits individuals under 16 from accessing major social media platforms. This law encourages a reset of digital habits during the holidays, offering an opportunity to establish healthier routines before the new school year begins.

The legislation requires social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Reddit, and X (formerly Twitter) to implement age verification systems to prevent access by those under 16. This initiative aims to protect young Australians from online risks such as harmful content, cyberbullying, and data privacy breaches. Platforms that fail to comply face significant penalties, reflecting the government’s commitment to creating safer online spaces for children.

This pivotal change in how young Australians engage with social media underscores the importance of fostering safer and healthier digital habits. At Lindisfarne, we are ready to support these changes and remain committed to helping students navigate the digital world responsibly and confidently through programs like ConnectEd.

Preparing for 2025: Balancing Screen Time

The start of a new year provides an excellent opportunity to create a balanced relationship with technology. Here are some strategies to help:

        • Foster Positive Digital Engagement: Encourage students to use technology for creative and educational purposes, such as coding, digital design, or exploring online learning tools.

        • Establish Clear Boundaries: Set screen-free times, such as during meals or before bedtime, to build better routines and foster family interaction.

        • Discuss Responsible Online Behaviour: Use the holidays to talk about the benefits and pitfalls of social media, empowering students to make informed choices.

        Ongoing Support for Families

We recognise that managing screen time and adjusting to new regulations can be challenging. Through our ConnectEd program, Lindisfarne is dedicated to providing families with practical resources, expert guidance, and strategies to help students thrive in an increasingly digital world. In 2025, our focus remains on equipping students with the skills they need to use technology purposefully while safeguarding their mental and emotional well-being.

We encourage families to begin conversations about responsible technology use during the holidays and explore the additional resources shared below. Together, we can help students embrace the digital world with confidence and balance. For further advice on managing screen time, please see the links below and look out for updates in the ConnectEd newsletter next year.

        Wishing You a Merry Christmas

Thank you for your continued support throughout 2024. I wish you all a joyful and restful holiday season.
