From the Principal

Foreword

Dear Lindisfarne Parents and Guardians,

It has been a rewarding and exciting week across our campuses, with enthusiasm and wonderful displays of house spirit.

On Monday, we gathered at the Sunshine Avenue Campus for our Year 4 Induction Ceremony, a truly special occasion for our students and their families. This milestone marks an important moment as our Year 4 cohort embraces their final year of learning at Sunshine Avenue before transitioning to the Mahers Lane campus for Middle School. It was wonderful to see the pride and excitement on the students’ faces as they reflected on their journey so far and looked ahead to the next stage of their Lindisfarne education. These ceremonies are always a reminder of the growth that takes place during the Junior School years and the strong sense of belonging that defines our community.

A major highlight this week has been our Swimming Carnivals, which once again brought our community together in a celebration of participation, resilience, and friendly competition. It is always a joy to see students giving their very best, whether in the pool or cheering from the sidelines. The much-anticipated Student versus Teacher relay never disappoints, and this year was no exception, providing plenty of laughter, excitement, and memorable moments that truly capture the spirit of Lindisfarne.

On Thursday evening, I had the privilege of attending the New South Wales Combined Independent Schools' annual Awards Ceremony in Sydney. Three of our outstanding student athletes were invited to the awards: Elle Down (Athletics and Cross Country), Andie Buchan (Cross Country), and Koa Stotz (Swimming). Both Elle and Andie attended the awards (pictured below with Mr Clucas), and it was a proud moment to see our students recognised at the NSW CIS awards for their outstanding performances at the national level in 2025, reflecting the dedication, perseverance, and excellence that continue to define our sporting programs. Elle Down went on to be named as the Primary School Athlete who made the most outstanding contribution to NSW CIS in 2025!

This Saturday, we will welcome 176 current and prospective students to the School for our annual Scholarship Testing. Scholarships at Lindisfarne are always highly competitive, and we wish all applicants the very best as they participate in our annual Scholarship testing program.

As I write to you this afternoon, our region is currently under a weather warning. I encourage all families to continue monitoring updates from the SES and local authorities. Please take extra care on the roads, avoid driving through areas prone to low-level flooding, and prioritise the safety of yourselves and your families.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and partnership. Wishing you a safe and restful weekend ahead.

Warm regards,

Stuart Marquardt

Chaplaincy

Chaplains' Column

Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Guardians,

Lenten Journey

This coming week, on Ash Wednesday, Christians begin the sacred season of Lent, a forty-day journey toward Easter, when we remember the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Some years ago, on Ash Wednesday, I was speaking to a group of Year 6 students in my former parish about Lent and asked them what they thought we do during this season. One replied very confidently, “Reverend Constantine, it’s the time when we get ready to eat the Easter bunnies.”

We do need to get our priorities right, don’t we?

Lent invites us into the “desert” with Jesus (cf. Matthew 4:1–11). In Scripture, the desert is a place of testing and struggle, but also a place of encounter — where God speaks tenderly to the heart (cf. Hosea 2:14). It is in the quiet and honesty of the desert that we come to know both ourselves and God more deeply.

Lent is therefore a time of courageous self-examination — a kind of spiritual stocktake — where we allow God to clear away whatever distracts us from Love. The Church offers us three simple and powerful practices for this journey: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

  • How might we make more space for prayer over these six weeks?

  • From what comforts might we fast, so that our hearts grow stronger and more attentive to God, to our deepest needs, and to the needs of others?

  • How might we give generously to those in need, allowing compassion to shape our actions?

Lent is more than giving up chocolate, wine or coffee. It is about repentance — literally, a change of mind and heart — and about rediscovering the immeasurable love of God that anchors our lives. When we forget that love, we see the consequences in our personal lives and in the wider social, economic and ecological challenges of our world.

As Julian of Norwich reminds us, “Let us merrily and gladly live our lives because of God’s love,” a love that, through the Cross, overcomes suffering, sin and even death itself.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Sales on Tuesday, 17 February via Flexischools

Thank you to all those who so generously support our Shrove Tuesday pancake fundraising initiative. Your generosity will not only help us and our students celebrate joyfully, but also raise funds to support Wegetail Retreat in caring for those who are terminally ill, and to assist St Paul’s Technical School, Owerre-Umudioka, Orlu, Nigeria in setting up a computer lab. Your compassion and kindness are deeply appreciated.

A Prayer of St Augustine of Hippo

Let us pray with St Augustine today:

O Lord,
in whom we live and move and have our being,
You have made us for yourself;
and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in You.
Amen.

As we prepare to enter this holy season of Lent, may our hearts and minds be open, our steps steady, and our lives be filled with God’s grace and richest blessings.

Thank you for who you are and for all you do. May God bless you and bless you kindly.

Swimming Carnivals at Lindisfarne

Earlier this week, we held our annual Lindisfarne Swimming Carnivals at the Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre in Murwillumbah. Both the Secondary (Years 7-12) and Primary (Years 3-6) carnivals were fantastic, and it was wonderful to see so much House spirit on display.

A heartfelt thank you to all the staff for their careful planning and supervision, which ensured both days ran smoothly. The carnivals were well attended, and it was wonderful to see so many families supporting their children. The Sports Department greatly appreciates the enthusiasm and participation from everyone and looks forward to carrying this energy into future events.

Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

This week our Secondary Swimming Carnival was held at the Murwillumbah pool and, despite the heat, it was another outstanding success. The day was marked by strong participation and an unmistakable sense of House pride. Events such as this are a defining feature of Senior School life. They bring students together across year groups, create opportunities for challenge and achievement, and foster the belonging that sits at the heart of a thriving school.

It was particularly pleasing to see such high levels of attendance. Whether students were competing in the pool, cheering from the sidelines or contributing behind the scenes, there was a collective energy that made the day memorable. Carnivals are not only about results. They are about commitment and connection. They remind us that learning extends far beyond the classroom.

Senior School events form an essential part of the Lindisfarne journey. They are not optional extras or add ons. They are integral to the development of character, resilience and House spirit. As parents and students, we are reminded that attendance at these events is expected. When every student participates, the experience is richer for all. The Senior School is strongest when everyone contributes.

We now look ahead to the Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals later in the year and anticipate even greater levels of involvement. I encourage all students to embrace these opportunities with enthusiasm and a willingness to challenge themselves. The full school experience is built through shared endeavour, and these occasions provide some of the most enduring memories of school.

I would also like to acknowledge and thank Ms Jo Mendoza, Director of Science, for hosting a breakfast to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The event celebrated and promoted equal participation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. With STEM pathways continuing to expand and evolve, it is vital that we actively encourage and support young people to pursue their interests in these fields. The Senior School remains committed to recognising important global observances such as this and to fostering aspiration and opportunity for all our students.

I thank our staff for their organisation and care, and our students for the energy and commitment they bring to each opportunity.

Year 12 at Lindisfarne: Embracing the Challenge, Supporting the Journey

During our scheduled pastoral care lesson last week, I spoke with the Year 12 cohort about the nature of the year ahead. As students move deeper into their final year of schooling, it is important to acknowledge a simple truth: the HSC year is meant to be challenging. The academic rigour, heightened expectations and steady pace of assessment are all part of a process designed to stretch students, refine their skills and prepare them for life beyond school.

With challenge naturally comes pressure. A degree of stress and anxiety at this stage is entirely normal and often reflects care, commitment and a genuine desire to do well. Learning to manage these feelings while maintaining perspective and balance is an important part of the growth that Year 12 fosters. Our conversation centred on the idea that difficulty is not a sign that something is wrong, but evidence that students are being stretched in meaningful and important ways. Setbacks, too, should be viewed as opportunities for feedback and refinement, not as signals to give up or prematurely “drop” from subjects. I encouraged our students to lean into this process, our teachers expect this.

At the same time, we recognise that there is a line between healthy pressure and feeling overwhelmed. When stress begins to impact wellbeing, sleep, motivation or confidence, support is essential. Our pastoral and academic teams are attentive to this and remain ready to assist students and families whenever needed. No student should feel they must navigate this year alone.

A cornerstone of our support for student success is the Senior Centre. While formal classes conclude at 3.20 pm, the Senior Centre Common Room will remain open until 5.00pm each Tuesday to Thursday. This provides students with a structured, quiet and purposeful space in which to study, collaborate and seek assistance. Academic support is available during these sessions, in accordance with the previously circulated schedule, ensuring students have direct access to subject-specific guidance and mentoring. We encourage all Year 12 students to make full use of this resource. As we move further into the year, we will continue to monitor student needs closely and, where appropriate, look to expand these offerings to ensure our students are supported both academically and personally during this important time.

Year 12 is demanding, but it is also deeply rewarding. As Mrs Cornell reminds our Senior School on occasion, “with challenge comes growth”, and with the right structures and support, our students are well equipped to meet the year ahead with resilience and determination.

Assistant Head of Senior School

Celebrating Our Scientists: International Day for Women and Girls in Science

This Wednesday, 11 February, we hosted our inaugural breakfast to celebrate the International Day for Women and Girls in Science. Our STEM Prefects, Chloe Chaseling and Hayley Maddalena, did a fantastic job welcoming our cohort of Year 11 and 12 Science students, alongside our Year 10 Accelerated Science girls, to recognise the vital role women play in the scientific community.

This year’s theme is “Synergizing AI, Social Science, STEM and Finance: Building Inclusive Futures for Women and Girls.” We were joined by guest speaker, Tegan Clark, via livestream. Tegan Clark is currently a PhD Candidate at the Australian National University researching dust storms and satellites, while also working as a Research and Data Specialist in agriculture technology. Her journey began in regional Queensland and progressed through an astrophysics degree before she pivoted to climate science, driven by a lifelong passion for nature and a commitment to advocacy for diversity in STEM. A very fitting speaker for our girls here at Lindisfarne! Unfortunately, the internet connection was interrupted during this and reminded us that technology doesn't always go to plan! I caught up with Tegan afterwards to complete our discussion, and you can watch the interview via the link below:

Interview with Tegan Clark

To our students: Science is a journey of discovery that requires grit. We encourage you to stay curious, ask the "unanswerable" questions and relish the challenge of complex problem-solving. When experiments fail or data is messy, remember that resilience is a core value for any great scientist. Let’s remember to love learning for the sake of learning!

Thank you again to our school leadership team, who continue to support the science at our school and to our STEM Prefects who are keen to build a program of events this year to continue building a culture of curiosity and achievement. I’d also like to thank our amazing female teachers of the Science Faculty, who are everyday role models for our girls and encourage them to do their best in this challenging field. We are proud to have 16 amazing women in Science amongst our team, including in the typically male-dominated fields of Physics and Engineering. It is a quiet representation like this that shows our girls that these are real possibilities for their futures if they choose it to be.

We have just wrapped up two of the most successful swimming carnivals in recent memory. Whilst we often measure success by the speed of our swimmers, two other metrics were very transparent in 2026: student attendance and student participation. The atmosphere across both days was palpable, especially noteworthy with some exhilarating house relays at the day's end.

Please find attached the raw Lindisfarne swimming results for 2026- HERE

The major celebratory award results are being withheld until after our Special Assembly on Monday 16, February (8:30 am). These awards include Age Champions and Runners Up, March Past results, Winning House, etc. Sunshine Avenue campus will have the event livestreamed - with their award recipients bused up to Mahers Lane.

Parents are welcome to attend this event in Ngahriyah at the Mahers Lane campus.

Our booking strategy for the TRAC Murwillumbah Aquatic Centre is usually a precision operation - securing Thursdays and Fridays slots two/three years in advance to align with Integrated Sport timetabling (we have booked until 2029 already!). However, those preferred dates were already claimed by other schools for this year's event. That scheduling ‘hiccup’ was certainly a blessing in disguise given the rain event predicted for the next few days.

A huge thank you to the 'small army' of staff behind the carnival's success. We are incredibly grateful to Cherie Montford and Fiona Pouchard (Sports Dept), Nicole Bold and Jamie Sullivan and their teams (Facilities/Grounds), the PDHPE crew, Student Admin, and Nursing teams for their seamless coordination and care. We also truly appreciate the many classroom teachers who spent the day working tirelessly both days to ensure everything ran smoothly.

Week 4 Events:

Monday 16: Special Assembly - Swimming Carnivals results

Tuesday 17: Basketball NCIS Primary Championships

Wednesday 18: Netball Clash of the Coast Carnival (Rnd 1)

Thursday 19:

  • Rugby 1st XV TRIAL

  • Lindisfarne Rugby Season Launch 2026

Message from the Sports Prefects

Hello Lindisfarne!

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the 2026 Lindisfarne Swimming Carnival. The March Past performances looked fantastic, and we are extremely grateful to all students who dived in and competed to earn house points.

The winners of the March Past and overall House Points will be announced at an assembly next Monday, 16 February. Please keep an eye on Seqta for further details regarding the assembly.

Thanks to all the boys who participated in the Netball Trials this week, we’re looking forward to a strong and successful team this year.

Lastly, thank you to everyone who has signed up for a representative team in 2026, with some trials already completed and teams selected. The Sports Department has been extremely pleased with the high level of student participation, and we can’t wait to see students represent Lindisfarne throughout this year. We’ve also loved seeing the gym back in full swing, along with some training sessions starting up again.

If you haven’t already, we encourage all students to get involved in sports this year, there is something for everyone! We’re excited for a successful and enjoyable year ahead!

NCIS Tennis Championships

The Lindisfarne tennis contingent showcased exceptional talent and grit at the recent Northern New South Wales Independent Schools (NCIS) competition held in Grafton. Despite the stifling heat, our athletes maintained their composure and performance levels across the Junior and Senior divisions. While the standard of play was high this year, every match was contested with exemplary sportsmanship and a positive spirit that made the school proud.

We celebrate several standout performances, with Georgia Naismith, Harry Naismith, Isaiah Mammen, and Harlem Selvey all demonstrating incredible skill to reach the semi-finals or finals of their respective brackets.

Special congratulations go to Ally McKiernan and Harper Clinton, who both secured championship wins. Harper’s victory was particularly impressive, as she triumphed over opponents several years her senior. Congratulations to all our players for a fantastic tournament!

The NCIS Tennis results are linked here.

Gold Coast Summer Classic Baseball

Over the holidays, six Lindisfarne students represented the Gold Coast Cougars in a Friendly Representative tournament featuring teams from across Queensland and New South Wales.

The students competed across several divisions:

  • Little League: Arden Blum (Year 6) and Leon Hering (Year 7)

  • Intermediate League: Thomas Hurrell (Year 7)

  • Junior League: Owen Frazer (Year 9) and James Hirst (Year 9)

  • Senior League: Joel Smith (Year 9)

All boys performed exceptionally well over the three-day tournament, securing a number of top-three placings. They are now continuing to train with the squad, vying for a spot on the Gold Coast teams to compete in the Queensland State Titles this April.

Notably, all six players began their junior baseball journey with the Northern Rivers Baseball Club based at Arkinstall Park, and the majority continue to play for the club during the summer season.

We wish the boys the very best of luck with their selections and their upcoming State Titles campaign!

Lindisfarne Swimmers Shine at QLD Sprint Championships

Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School swimmers delivered outstanding performances at the Queensland Sprint Championships in Brisbane last weekend, with six students stepping up on the state stage. The standout results included Koa Stotz claiming dual 15-Year Queensland Champion titles in both the 50m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke. Lennox Eke secured the 14-year Queensland Champion crown in the 50m Backstroke and added an impressive eighth place in the 50m Butterfly. Strong performances continued across the squad, with Hunter Gaffney finishing fifth in the 13yrs 50m Butterfly and Taylen Upton placing sixth in the 10yrs 50m Butterfly.

With the sprint titles now complete, attention shifts quickly to the upcoming school swimming season events, along with preparations for the Australian Age Championships to be held on the Gold Coast in April. The results in Brisbane highlight the depth of talent emerging from Lindisfarne and set an exciting tone for the months ahead.

2026 Training Schedule and Notes

Please take note of the 2026 training schedule below. Rugby union is a team sport and we need as many of our players to be in attendance week in and week out to grow the Lindisfarne rugby program. Please note we will NOT be sending reminders for these training sessions (all players and families should assume training will ALWAYS BE ON), however we will let you all know with as much time as possible if we need to cancel a session due to weather or other factors.

Students should be in proper training attire (NOT school sports uniform) with mouthguard, boots and any other equipment they play with for every training session. This requirement also includes integrated school sport on Thursday i.e., students should wear our rugby training top or similar training top and not the school sport polo at this time. Alongside this, students should have a towel and spare school uniform to change into in case there is wet weather.

Outside of rugby training times, students should be in the correct uniform, which includes wearing the school sport polo on Thursday in P1-2 and P5-6 and in PE lessons and not rugby training tops.

Netball

Lindisfarne Netball Representative Squads for 2026.

Over the past week, we have seen over 100 athletes trial for the school representative squad and congratulate the athletes moving forward on their Netball journey.

Lindisfarne Netball Team trials were held under the experienced eyes of our selectors, Kim Boland and Bec Stower from the Bond University Bullsharks. Our players brought a high standard of Netball to the Lindisfarne courts, and we look forward to an exciting Netball Rep season.

The School Representative Netball squad will train during sport time in Term 2 and Term 3 at the Tallebudgera Sport and Recreation Centre and Tweed Netball Courts, with Players entered in a variety of Carnivals and events this season with varying combinations of teams, year groups, age groups, skill level, and competitive, development, and emerging divisions.

With Queensland competitions such as the Vicki Wilson Cup, Queensland Schools Gala Day, Titans Carnival, and Clash of the Coast, combined with NSW competitions including the NSW Schools Cup, Fast 5, NCIS, and Anglican Schools competition, there will be an event to suit each level of our representative team. Follow the carnivals with our Netball Bulletin link here.

Lindisfarne aligned with the Bond Bullsharks as Junior Pathway Partner.

Lindisfarne will be the 2026 Bond Bullsharks Junior Pathway Partner, with incredible support and opportunities for our players.

Head Coach of the Queensland U18 Team, Bec Stower, and Director of Netball at Bond University Bullsharks, Kim Boland, provide students with an unbiased selection process that professionally replicates the same process used to select players for Queensland State and Premier League Netball sub-Elite contract teams. This link creates real-world experiences in our School setting to authenticate our processes.

We thank Bond and are incredibly fortunate to have Bond conduct our Year 5/6, Year7/8 and Year 9/12 School Representative Netball selections for our 2026 Representative Netball teams.

Bond Bullsharks continues to support and extend our Lindisfarne Players in the Bullsharks Cubs Program, and we applaud the players who have stepped up to the Cubs program, recently completing Round 1 at the new Hinterland Netball Courts.

Within our Netball Launch, on Saturday 21 February 2026, held at Pioneer Country, the Bond Bullsharks will be delivering events and activations for our players in a pre-season meet and greet, while parents and carers have the opportunity to hear about the upcoming 2026 season news over light refreshments.

Round Square

Round Square Conference

We are delighted to share an exciting opportunity for our students to take part in an upcoming Round Square Conference, hosted by Ballarat Grammar, with Round Square schools from across Australia coming together for this unique experience. This opportunity is for Year 8 and Year 9 students and will be the only chance this year to take part in a Round Square Conference.

Ballarat, Victoria
Monday, 7 April – Friday 11 April, 2026
All-inclusive cost: $1,600
Includes return flights, accommodation, all meals, conference program, activities and excursions

Set in the historic regional city of Ballarat, widely recognised as the birthplace of Australian democracy, this conference offers students a powerful blend of learning, leadership and adventure. Hosted by Ballarat Grammar, the conference is themed “You’re the Voice” and invites students to listen, speak and lead as they explore agency, freedom and democratic principles in meaningful and engaging ways.

The program draws inspiration from the Eureka Rebellion of 1854, a defining moment in Australia’s democratic history when gold miners stood up against injustice beneath the Southern Cross flag. Throughout the conference, students will unpack this pivotal event and reflect on what democracy means today and how young people can shape the future.

Students will participate in inspiring guest speaker sessions, small-group baraza discussions, cultural activities and immersive learning experiences designed to build confidence, empathy and global citizenship. Highlights of the conference include a full-day Eureka Education Centre program, an afternoon and evening experience at Sovereign Hill including dinner and attendance at the Aura Sound and Light Show, and a day of adventure activities at Creswick’s Adekate Camp featuring zip-lining, orienteering and the Leap of Faith.

Additional experiences include a Mock United Nations trial and debate, a Hunger Lunch and service activity, Mini Olympics, a visit to the Eureka Tower, and an exploration of politics in art through the city's laneways.

This promises to be a memorable and enriching experience that brings the Round Square IDEALS of Democracy, Leadership and International Understanding to life in an authentic and inspiring way.

Attached is an APPLICATION form that can be completed and returned to Mr Lush, mlush@lindisfarne.nsw.edu.au. Applications are due by Monday, 16 February.

We look forward to offering our students the chance to echo the Eureka spirit and discover the power of their own voices.

Safer Internet Day

Celebrating Safer Internet Day at the Junior School

This week the Junior School students joined the global celebration of Safer Internet Day, focusing on this year’s particularly relevant theme ‘Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’. Safer Internet Day is a global day of action dedicated to making the online world safer, more positive and more inclusive for everyone. Throughout the week, students participated in a wide range of activities.

Kindergarten and Year 1 students shared the story of Swoosh and Glide which introduced students to five essential online safety rules, such as using devices in shared spaces and asking for help when needed. They reinforced these lessons by drawing themselves acting responsibly or completing an interactive Seesaw task. A role-play activity helped Year 2 students develop critical thinking skills to spot AI generated content and online scams. By analysing different online offers, they identified red flags that can signal a scam, such as unrealistically low prices that seem too good to be true. Year 3 students explored their digital footprints, learning how every online action creates a lasting impression. They reflected on their own internet use and identified safe online habits. Year 4 students integrated AI to code their own Dance Party and had valuable discussions around the safe and ethical use of AI.

We’re always talking about online safety at the Junior School and Safer Internet Day was another fantastic opportunity for our students to build digital resilience and confidence. We encourage parents and carers to continue these conversations at home by discussing family internet rules and strategies for safe online behaviour.
