Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we come to the end of a rewarding week at Lindisfarne, there is a great deal happening across our School and within the wider community.

FunFest 2026 is fast approaching, and we look forward to welcoming members of our community for what promises to be a fun and festive day on Saturday, 22 August, on the Mahers Lane Campus.

There is still time to sell the raffle tickets to win an MG3, which have been sent home with each family via their oldest student. Every ticket sold contributes to the success of FunFest and supports the work of our Parents and Friends Committee. Every sold book also enters the family into the draw to win an Xbox as an additional incentive.

Donations of goods and services for the Mega Auction and Silent Auction are also greatly appreciated. If you or your business can contribute, please contact pandf@lindisfarne.nsw.edu.au.

Our Parents and Friends Committee gives generously of their time to bring events such as FunFest to life, and I encourage everyone to get behind their efforts and help make this year's event a wonderful celebration of our School community.

For those attending, keep an eye out for me at the dunk tank around midday. I’m always up to the challenge and encourage students, staff, and parents to join in the fun.

Our Parents and Friends Committee also recently approved funding for large-scale shade umbrellas and appropriate seating and tables for the Mahers Lane campus, outside the student wellbeing area and the Bahna cafe. In addition, the recently completed, Parents and Friends-funded dry creek bed project at Sunshine Avenue has been hugely popular with the children and has added great value to the campus. Please support the Parents and Friends Association, which works so hard to support our students and school.

As a community, we should be proud to see Lindisfarne alumnus and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Flynn Southam add his support to the proposal for a 50-metre pool in the Tweed.

Flynn's achievements continue to inspire our School community, and his supportive comments highlight the difference quality aquatic facilities can make for young people, families, and sporting pathways.

With a swimming centre included in Lindisfarne's own long-term Master Plan, though still some years away, we understand the importance of planning for community facilities that meet the needs of our growing region. A 50-metre pool would be a significant asset for all local schools, sporting groups, and the wider Tweed community for many years to come.

Members of our community wishing to show their support can attend the family-friendly gathering at the South Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre at 8.30am on Monday, 17 August, contact their Tweed Shire Councillors, or attend the Council meeting in Murwillumbah on Thursday, 20 August.

It was also wonderful to see our Middle and Senior Stage Band perform at Club Tweed last night. The performance was an impressive showcase of our students' talent, commitment, and musicianship.

Opportunities to perform within the wider community are an important part of our students' musical development, building confidence and allowing them to share the results of many hours of rehearsal and preparation. My thanks go to our students, Music staff, and everyone who supported the performance. It was another terrific example of Music's strength at Lindisfarne.

As we look ahead to another full week, I thank our students, staff, and families for the many ways you continue to contribute to the life of Lindisfarne. I look forward to seeing many of you at FunFest next Saturday, 22 August.

As we close out the week, I am immensely proud of our Year 12 students, the class of 2026, for the way they have approached their HSC Trial Exams. I thank all of the staff and families who continue to support our students as they prepare for final exams later this year and life beyond school.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff and Students,

For most of my articles so far this year we have been focusing on the Six Ideals of Round Square. In this article we will combine two of the Ideals together, those being, Service and Leadership.

This is because the servant leadership model that Jesus introduced actually revolutionised our understanding of what true leadership looks like by turning it on its head.

For in the Greco-Roman world, which Jesus inhabited, leadership was effectively dictatorship, especially that of the Roman Emperor.

It was a leadership model of distance and dominance. Whereas Jesus’ leadership model was based on humility and service.

One of the Gospel accounts that illustrates this point is when Jesus washes his disciples’ feet.

Now, whilst this may not sound so strange to us, as we may well be already familiar with the story, at the time, it would have been utterly shocking.

For in Jesus’ Jewish culture, washing someone else’s feet was viewed as being the lowest form of service a person could possibly perform.

The Rabbis even had a saying; “every service that a slave performs for their master a disciple should perform for their Rabbi, except the untying of their sandals.”

It was considered to be just too lowly and too degrading. And yet, Jesus, the Son Of God and Master of the Universe, no less, takes it even further, or should I say even lower?

He doesn’t merely take off his disciple’s sandals but he washes their dirty, smelly, feet.

This is actually why Peter initially protested - “surely, you’re too good for this, Jesus?!”

And yet, it was Jesus’ paradigm shifting servant leadership model, which 2000 years later, inspired ‘the Paradox of Servant Leadership’ poem we use here at Lindisfarne, especially the lines; “important enough to be last, great enough to be anonymous, leading enough to serve.”

But what does this kind of leadership style look like in practice? Does it mean that we have to go around washing each other’s feet?

Well, not exactly, although we do have it as a liturgical practice to remind us of humble service.

But Jesus washing his disciple’s feet was really an outer sign of an inner attitude.

It was a demonstration of the right kind of motivation one should have towards leadership.

Because the danger of leadership positions is that they can attract those only interested in power and prestige - people who are only in it for themselves.

As Plato said - “only those who don’t desire power are fit to hold it.”

So what does servant leadership look like in reality? Well, it is here that another paradigm shifting approach that Jesus introduced can help.

Historian John Dickson, in his book entitled ‘Humilitas,’ based on his PhD thesis, demonstrates that Jesus introduced a humility revolution which transformed how Western society has viewed leadership, ever since.

Before Christ, humility wasn’t a virtue in Western culture, rather, love of honour was.

Humility was just humiliation.

But again, Jesus turned this on its head by his teaching but even more so by his actions, especially his sacrificial death on the cross.

For Jesus’ followers came to the realisation that if the greatest leader they had ever known lay down his life in willing service then true leadership must be humble, which Dickson defines as “the noble choice to forgo one’s status, deploy one’s resources and use one’s influence for the good of others before oneself.”

As an Anglican School, this is the type of leadership model I encourage us to seek to emulate.

For our world is in desperate need of such leaders.

Week 4 has been another wonderful week at the Junior School, with our students embracing opportunities to connect with others, take their learning beyond the classroom and challenge themselves in new ways.

One of the highlights of the week was welcoming our friends from Infinite Aged Care back to the Junior School. Our students proudly performed their Speech Choir items before our visitors gathered for a lovely morning tea together on the back deck. It was particularly special to connect with the residents as they reminisced about their own school days while watching our Junior School students enjoy the energy and fun of playtime out on the back oval and surrounding playgrounds.

A huge thank you to Abbey Read for her leadership and ongoing commitment to nurturing this connection year after year. These visits have become such a meaningful part of the Junior School calendar, providing our students with an authentic opportunity to connect across generations.

Our Year 2 students also took their learning beyond the classroom this week with a visit to Jack Evans Boat Harbour as part of their Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) learning. Having been exploring Australian waterways and their importance, students had the opportunity to investigate one of our beautiful local environments firsthand. They observed the natural and human features of the area, collected data and made connections between their classroom learning and the world around them.

Looking Ahead to Week 5

Next week, we look forward to welcoming five international students from Imagine Education Australia to the Junior School, where they will join our Year 2–4 classrooms for a two-day school immersion experience. This provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to form new connections, learn alongside one another and celebrate cultural exchange within our Junior School community.

We will also recognise Bullying No Way Week, with a strong focus on what it means to be a great friend. Throughout the week, students will explore how to recognise mean-on-purpose behaviour, understand the impact our words and actions can have on others, and develop practical strategies for responding when something doesn't feel right. This complements the important friendship and wellbeing learning already happening across our Junior School classrooms through our URSTRONG program.

There will also be plenty of curiosity and discovery as we celebrate National Science Week. Our Year 2–4 classes will take part in hands-on science workshops led by our Year 8 Ad Astra students, providing another valuable opportunity for connection between our Junior and Middle School students. K–4 will then come together for a special Science Show presented by members of our Science Faculty, which is sure to spark plenty of wonder, questions and enthusiasm from our young scientists!

A big thank you to Jo Mendoza, our Director of Science, for bringing these experiences to life and inspiring curiosity and a genuine love of science in our Junior School students.

With FunFest just around the corner, Year 3 Camp approaching and our much-loved Book Week celebrations on the horizon, there is certainly plenty for our students and families to look forward to in the coming weeks.

Lindisfarne 6 v 6 Football trials

Lindisfarne will be hosting the LAGS 6 v 6 Football Tournament later in Term 3, and we are looking forward to another exciting day of football!

Students interested in representing Lindisfarne at the tournament will be required to participate in a trial process. Trials will be held during lunchtime in Week 6 at Arkinstall Park.

To provide students with more information and register their interest, Mr Croft will hold a meeting during Week 5. This meeting will outline the trial process, tournament details and expectations for students wishing to be selected.

The 6 v 6 Football Tournament and trial process is always extremely popular, so students interested in being involved are strongly encouraged to attend the Week 5 meeting and every trial session where possible.

We look forward to seeing plenty of enthusiastic footballers putting their skills to the test and competing for the opportunity to represent Lindisfarne!

Total Football Academy – After School Program

The Total Football Academy after school program is on again in Term 3. The program is a great initiation into the basic skills and small sided games in Football. The program runs every Monday afternoon on the school Oval and will continue until week 9 Monday 14 September.

This program is very popular and will fill quickly. These vacancies will be filled on a first come first basis, so if you are interested please register using the Parent Lounge.

On Monday, 10 August, Sunshine Avenue welcomed our friends from Infinite Aged Care for another very special visit. Our Stage 2 students showcased their creative talents, performing a wonderful range of poems, recitals and musical items for our resident friends. We were also fortunate to have Kindy Turtles present a beautiful Acknowledgement of Country, followed by performances from our Stage 2 speech choirs.

Our students worked extremely hard to prepare their poems for the Murwillumbah Performing Arts Eisteddfod at the end of Term 1 and were thrilled to have the opportunity to take to the stage once again. They confidently presented a range of well-rehearsed solos and duos for our very special audience, clearly enjoying every moment.

The morning concluded with some very special words from our supportive leader, Mrs Angela Mundy. Her care, compassion and warmth made our residents feel right at home from the moment she reached out her hand to greet them as they stepped off the bus, right through to helping them back on again at the end of their visit. We were also privileged to receive a beautiful blessing from Reverend Constantine, which touched the hearts of both young and old alike.

Our students embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm and the happiness and warmth felt by the residents was unmistakable, with many of them telling us how much they had enjoyed their visit and that they couldn’t wait to return.

A very big thank you goes to our teachers who continue to so generously give their time. They work tirelessly to create opportunities just like this one where students regularly share in meaningful experiences that not only continue, but strengthen our connection with the wider school community.

Through these special moments, our students learn the importance of kindness, respect and compassion. They are able to form authentic and genuine connections with those whose hands have helped shape the world we live in today and formed the foundation on which our students continue to grow and blossom.

We cannot wait until we once again get to visit our special friends and strengthen the bonds we share.

Brainstorm Productions

Today, our Years 5, 6 and 7 students welcomed Brainstorm Productions to Lindisfarne for a series of live theatre performances focused on student wellbeing.

Years 5 and 6 watched Saving Lil & Archie, while our Year 7 students participated in Cyberia. Through live theatre, the performances explored issues including friendships, resilience, online safety, help-seeking and making positive choices.

It was great to see our students so engaged in a different way of exploring some really important topics, and the performances provided plenty for students to think and talk about beyond the sessions themselves.

Farewell to our TakeOff Japan Study Tour Group

Today we also farewelled our TakeOff Japan Study Tour Group after two wonderful weeks with us at Lindisfarne.

Over the past fortnight, our Japanese visitors have experienced school life at Lindisfarne alongside their buddies, joining classes, activities and spending time getting to know one another.

Our final farewell included the presentation of certificates, plenty of fun with Just Dance, the exchange of contact details and, of course, lots of hugs.

It was a lovely way to finish what has been a wonderful experience for both our visiting students from across Japan and our Lindisfarne students. The friendships and connections formed over the past two weeks have been very special to see.

Thank you to all of our Lindisfarne buddies who helped our visitors feel so welcome and included during their time with us. We wish our Japanese students a safe journey home and hope they take with them many happy memories of their time at Lindisfarne.

At this week’s Senior School Assembly, The Reverend Lyndon shared the story of a woman he knew who gave her time generously within her local community. She did not volunteer for recognition or accolades. She did it simply because she was kind.

His story resonated deeply with me, particularly alongside the student reflections we heard during the same assembly about the recent Service Learning Trip to Cape York and the Happiness Lies in Gratitude trip to the Philippines.

During their holidays, these students chose to spend time away from the comforts of home to serve others and learn more about the wider world. They returned with fresh perspectives and a renewed appreciation for the lives they lead. Just as importantly, they brought those insights back to the School and encouraged the rest of us to think more deeply about gratitude, service and our responsibility to others.

Giving our time is a genuine gift. It asks us to look beyond ourselves and recognise that we each have something worthwhile to contribute. Service does not always need to involve travelling far from home or participating in a formal program. It can be found in the quiet decision to help someone without being asked or to notice when another person needs support.

At times, I have wondered whether altruism is becoming a fading notion in our society. We live in a world that often celebrates individual achievement and public recognition. Yet this week’s assembly left me feeling refreshed and reassured. Our young people are seeing the value of kindness, not as something passive or sentimental, but as a choice that can make a meaningful difference.

The most powerful acts of kindness are often those performed without any expectation of acknowledgement. They may never appear on a résumé or receive public praise, but their impact is real.

May we continue to encourage our students to recognise that serving others is not only something they do. It helps shape the people they become.

If you have entered your child into ICAS Science or Spelling Bee this year, please make sure they are aware they will be sitting the tests this week.

Students at Mahers Lane will need to ensure that they have headphones and charged devices. Rooms and times will be published in the daily notices each day next week.

Parent Ed - Year 12 Post-School Pathways Information Evening

A reminder to Year 12 students and families about our upcoming Post-School Pathways Evening.

This important session is highly recommended for all Year 12 students and their families, regardless of their intended post-school pathway. The evening will explore the value of post-school qualifications, whether through university, TAFE, private training providers, apprenticeships and traineeships.

The session will then provide practical guidance on university applications, including key dates and requirements, early entry programs, state-based application systems and understanding admission requirements.

We encourage Year 12 families to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to become better informed about the options and processes ahead.

As Book Week fast approaches, I am enjoying hearing the excited whispers of students deciding which book character they will dress up as for our annual costume parade. The theme this Year is ‘Symphony of Stories’, and while we encourage students to dress to the theme, they can choose any book character that they like.

Some important information for students and families:

• Years 5-6 do not need to register a costume, and should direct any questions about costumes to their classroom teacher.

• Years 7-12 need to register their costumes via a Google Form, which has been shared with the students on SEQTA. Please encourage your child to get involved!

• Students who choose to dress up are encouraged to bring a gold coin donation to raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. You can learn more about this important cause here.

• Due to some clashing school calendar dates, the Mahers Lane parade will happen one week later than the Junior School parade. Please double-check dates if you have children across both campuses!

Science in the House

Wednesday, Miss Alex Cork, myself and one of our STEM Prefects, Hayley Maddalena were invited to NSW Parliament to showcase the work we have done in Science at Lindisfarne. It was an opportunity to share our work with Members of Parliament and other schools who were also in attendance. We were one of ten schools selected to present to this forum and we were impressed by the range of ideas on display.

Hayley presented the work she has been working on to establish the STEM Ambassadors Club at Lindisfarne. She spoke confidently with attendees about the new initiatives introduced this year such as the Bangalow Billycart Derby, the Women in Science Breakfast and the SuperGEMS program. We were very proud of how Hayley presented herself and to see the progress our STEM Prefects have made in the first year of this portfolio.

We were also very pleased to be able to show the new initiatives we have grown in the Science Faculty over the last few years. From the Science Fair, Science Week Activities, Sustainability Initiatives and our inaugural Science Research Trip to Lady Elliot Island, we had plenty to share with attendees.

The event has filled us with confidence in our progress and goals for Science at Lindisfarne and we are looking to continue to grow in this space.

Science Week is fast approaching, and we would like to invite you all along to our Science Fair, which will be held on Monday, 17 August, straight after school from 3:30-5:30pm in the Senior Centre.

Bring your friends and family along to see a range of the work students in our Secondary School have produced throughout the year in Science classes as well as the finalists for the Science Photography Competition.

At 4:30pm, we will be hearing from a special guest speaker as well as our HSC Science Extension students who have wrapped up their Major Projects and will be sharing their findings.

On the day, we will also be running interactive STEM activities that you can participate in, including a Microscopy Challenge, Paper Aeroplane Contest, Slime Making Station and more with prizes to be won as well. We wish our U15 Bill Turner girls all the very best for their two-day campaign in Coffs Harbour next week, as this talented group of football players look to try and break into the holy grail of school-based football - the semi-finals and finals.

With over 500 schools initially being registered, our crew are down to the final 16 schools. It goes without saying, the competition from here on in is deadly. Please wish this team all the best, who have been training the house down since February:

RECENT GAMES

U16 Boys

It has been an exciting few weeks for our U16 Rugby 7s programme, with two tournaments providing plenty of growth, success and momentum heading into next week’s FNC 7s Finals.

Our first challenge was the Queensland Emerging Schools Qualifying Tournament against Kings and Miami State High, with the top two teams earning qualification for the highly sought-after Queensland All Schools tournament in September. After a slow start and a heavy opening loss to Kings, the boys responded with real character, bouncing back to defeat Miami in a tightly contested match.

Max Esgate was instrumental throughout the day, creating opportunities through his well-executed contestable kick-offs, while Jack Cross was a constant presence with his work rate, crucial tackles and ability to win possession. Captain Matty Dunn led from the front when it mattered most, scoring two tries in our final must-win game against Miami. Austin Lowes and Oscar Moller were immense defensively, with Oscar also finishing a cracking try after a slicing run and brilliant one-handed offload from Henry Alford. Henry’s improvement across the tournament was outstanding, producing some of his best rugby when the pressure was highest.

Most importantly, the boys secured qualification for the Queensland All Schools Rugby 7s Tournament in September, a fantastic reward for their efforts.

More recently, we entered two U16 teams in the FNC 7s warm-up tournament, with both sides finishing the day undefeated.

In our more experienced group, Archie Wilson impressed in his first tournament, scoring several excellent tries and showcasing his pace, vision and courage. London Moore also demonstrated how far his game has developed, while Max Esgate, Max Clunies-Ross and Matty Dunn continued to be outstanding leaders within the group. Archer Barr’s improvement and growing impact have been fantastic to watch, while Jack Cross continues to set an exceptional standard through his consistency and work rate.

Our younger side was equally impressive. Sennen Weatherall produced some excellent rugby, while captain Coby Ellison expertly directed the team and impressed both coaches with his leadership. Oscar Moller was another clear leader, Leo Wadsworth proved an excellent addition, and Harper Jonsson was a constant threat with ball in hand, scoring several quality tries. Campbell Patterson was equally difficult for opposition defences to contain.

Next week, we return for the FNC 7s Finals Series with two U16 teams ready to compete. The boys’ commitment to Monday evening and Thursday sport training has been outstanding, and we are excited to see them put that hard work into practice when it matters.

Lindisfarne Returns to the Gold Coast Secondary Schools Drama Festival

After a 15-year hiatus, Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School proudly returned to the Gold Coast Secondary Schools Drama Festival, with our talented Stage 4 Drama Ensemble taking to the stage in the Junior Division.

A compelling original work, written and directed by Mrs Kim Shepherd, students presented Because I Knew You, competing against 15 secondary schools from across the region. The production captivated audiences and adjudicators alike, earning the prestigious Outstanding Dramatic Performance award.

The ensemble Harper Reid, Chloe Manwarring, Amelia Haubek, Harvey Johnston, Ginny Leslie, Heidi Miklos, Emmylou Johnson, Edie Warren, Calvin Barlow, Miles-Dawes Sullivan, Imogen Donkin, Cillian O'Grady and Darcy Bastin- Byrne delivered a deeply moving performance, showcasing an extraordinary ability to connect with the material on a remarkably mature level. Their storytelling took the audience on an emotional journey, seamlessly moving from moments of laughter to heartbreak within the same scene. It was this emotional honesty, combined with their exceptional stage presence, that made the performance so memorable.

The students' camaraderie, unwavering commitment to one another shone throughout the evening. Every member of the ensemble contributed to a production that demonstrated not only impressive skills to create theatre but also the power of collaboration and trust.

A special congratulations goes to Harper Reid, who received the Outstanding Actor Award for an exceptional and compelling performance that demonstrated remarkable emotional depth and maturity.

An outstanding reflection of the strength of the ensemble was the recognition of several cast members with Highly Commended Acting Awards. Congratulations to Harvey Johnston, Ginny Leslie, Amelia Haubek and Chloe Manwarring on this well-deserved achievement. Receiving individual recognition at a festival of this calibre is a testament to the dedication, authenticity and skill these students brought to their performances, further highlighting the exceptional standard of Lindisfarne's Drama program.

A special thank you also goes to our evening Comperes, Year 10 and 11 Drama students Chelsea Kill, Sofia Wilson and Aurora Vatcher-Anin who represented Lindisfarne with confidence and professionalism, helping the evening run smoothly and contributing to a positive festival experience for all. Behind the scenes, Chelsea Kill operated the lighting cues, helping to enhance the atmosphere and storytelling throughout the performance.

A heartfelt thank you also goes to our dedicated Assistant Directors, whose creativity, organisation and support were instrumental in bringing the production to life, Madeline Neumann and Anna Haubek.

Congratulations to Mrs Kim Shepherd and the entire cast and crew on this outstanding achievement. Lindisfarne's return to the Gold Coast Secondary Schools Drama Festival has been a fitting celebration of the talent, dedication and passion within our Drama program, and we look forward to many more successes in the years to come.

Lindisfarne is proud to be a member of SchoolTV, a trusted online wellbeing resource designed to support parents and carers in navigating the challenges young people face today.

SchoolTV provides practical, evidence-based information from leading experts across a wide range of topics relevant to children and adolescents including mental health, cyber safety, school survival, positive parenting, diversity and inclusion.

The platform offers videos, fact sheets and guidance to help families better understand and respond to issues impacting student wellbeing. New topics are regularly added to ensure families have access to current and relevant information.

Lindisfarne Students Embark on Round Square 60th Anniversary Kilimanjaro Adventure

Two Lindisfarne students and a member of staff have begun an extraordinary adventure in Tanzania as part of the Round Square 60th Anniversary Mount Kilimanjaro Expedition.

Lucas Greaves (Year 11) and Art Lush (Year 10) successfully secured places on the international expedition after applying directly to Round Square in the United Kingdom. With places strictly limited, both students completed a rigorous application and selection process before being chosen to represent Lindisfarne alongside students from Round Square schools across the world.

Joining them is Mrs Kelly Bedford, Head of Barnabas House, who also underwent a competitive selection process and was appointed as one of the expedition's team leaders.

Participants began arriving in Tanzania last Friday, with the eight-day Lemosho Route commencing on Monday. Today, the team is making its way to Karanga Camp, situated at an elevation of 3,995 metres, as they continue their gradual ascent of Africa's highest mountain.

The expedition has been organised to celebrate 60 years of Round Square, bringing together young people from around the globe to embrace the IDEALS of Adventure, Leadership, Internationalism and Service while undertaking one of the world's most iconic treks.

If all goes to plan, Lucas, Art and Mrs Bedford will reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres) on Sunday, standing on the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit will be the culmination of months of preparation, training and determination, and promises to be a truly unforgettable experience.

We look forward to hearing Art and Lucas share their experiences in a future edition of the newsletter. For now, we wish Lucas, Art and Mrs Bedford every success as they continue their ascent and hope they enjoy the incredible privilege of standing on the roof of Africa.
