2024 Term 2 Week 1 3 May 2024
Upcoming Events
From the Principal
Dear Lindisfarne Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to a new term filled with promise and opportunity. I hope the break and change of routine provided time to recharge and enjoy precious moments with your family. As we step into Term 2, there are many achievements to celebrate and exciting events coming up over the next few weeks.
I would like to give special acknowledgement to our Rugby Union teams for their impressive performance at the Ballymore Cup and Armidale Carnival over the holidays. Competing in these significant events, our U13, U15, and 1st XV teams and U-12 teams displayed outstanding sportsmanship and resilience. The dedication and teamwork shown by our players was inspiring and set a high bar for the season. I also received commendable feedback from the accommodation providers regarding our students' exemplary behaviour, reflecting the values we cherish at Lindisfarne.
During the holidays, our community actively engaged in ANZAC Day services, which are a vital part of our national heritage. It was an honour to join the dawn service and the main march at Tweed Heads, witnessing firsthand the respect and reverence our students and staff hold for this significant day. Year 12 student Mia Harris delivered an exceptional address, contributing profoundly to the commemoration. I am proud of the way our Lindisfarne community came together to honour the memory of our servicemen and women, across the Tweed Coast and beyond.
We're thrilled to welcome back our teachers and students who attended the Round Square Conference in Munich, Germany. This event provided a global platform for our students to engage in discussions on key international issues, enhancing their understanding and fostering a broader global perspective. The insights and experiences gained from this conference are invaluable, and we look forward to integrating these learnings into our community.
We are delighted to host exchange students from Pallikoodam School in India this term. Over the next two weeks, they will be immersed in our educational and cultural practices, attending classes and participating in school activities. This exchange is an excellent opportunity for both Lindisfarne and Pallikoodam students to learn from each other and foster international friendships.
In September/October of this year there will be an opportunity for Lindisfarne Students to engage in an inaugural Cultural Immersion tour to India including a return visit to Pallikoodam School. Further information can be found here.
We extend our best wishes to Year 9 Student Lachlan Arghyros as he competes in the ISA Junior World Surfing Championships in El Salvador. Lachlan's commitment and passion for surfing are commendable, and we are eagerly cheering for his success on the global stage.
Congratulations to past student Joshua Mammen (2020), on earning his MBA from Otterbein University in Ohio USA. Joshua continues to inspire, combining high-level study with his college Tennis commitments, including representing the University in Italy before returning to Australia. Joshua completed a Bachelor of Actuarial Science at Bond University prior to taking up a scholarship at Otterbein University to complete his MBA. Seeing our former students achieve great success is always inspiring, and we celebrate Joshua’s significant academic milestone.
Likewise it was wonderful to see Year 11 Student Jeff Dunne (second from the right) included in the launch of the Australian Team uniform for the Paris Olympics. Jeff’s Olympic Journey has been almost entirely self-funded, and he has a number of important lead-up events to still attend as he commences his final preparations for Paris 2024. If you’d like to support Jeff Dunne as he prepares for the Olympics you can do so via his GoFundMe page at this link.
We are excited to celebrate our school’s Foundation Day Services across all campuses next week. This significant event honours our history and community, and we invite all to participate in the celebrations. The services will be on :
- Sunday, 5 May, 9:00 am- St Cuthbert's Anglican Church (our founding Parish) Tweed Heads
- Tuesday, 7 May 8:40 am- Middle School Service - Ngahriyah
- Wednesday, 8 May, 8:40 am- Senior School Service - Ngahriyah
- Thursday, 9 May, 10:00 am- Junior School Service - Sunshine Avenue
Please join us this Sunday from 4:30 pm for our Spiritual Gym family service which is the perfect opportunity for spiritual enrichment and community connection as we launch into the term ahead.
Finally, please see the important correspondence sent out from Kinetic Bus Services in regard to changes effective as of Monday, May 6, 2024 (here).
As we embark on this term, I am enthusiastic about the opportunities it holds for growth, learning, and community engagement. Thank you for your continued support.

It is a joy to have our school community back again for the start of Term 2. I hope you all had a refreshing break, and a change of pace for those who worked to get things ready for the start of Term. “Every moment”, T.S Eliot said, “is a new beginning.” We’re grateful to God for this new beginning, and entrust to him all our endeavours this term for the learning, growth and development of our young people.

Thy Kingdom Come Global Prayer Movement
Every year from Ascension Day to Pentecost Sunday, Christians around the world gather in prayer to pray for more people to come to know the love and hope of Jesus Christ so that peace can reign in our hearts and among the nations. Please click here to join this global prayer movement.
2024: Year of Light Prayer
Finally, for this week, please join me in praying our Year of Light Prayer:
Loving Jesus,
love of God in human flesh;
You call us to be the light of the world,
and to dispel the darkness of fear, worry,
Loneliness, ignorance and indifference.
Enable us by your Holy Spirit,
to be lighthouses of love, peace,
joy, kindness and forgiveness.
In our School and at home, teach us to pay attention
to the little things of daily life:
To small gestures of gratitude,
to the care and concern of one another.
So that we can make our School and our world
a beacon of love and light.
We pray to the Father in your mighty name, Amen.
If you would like us to pray for any specific intention, please send your prayer requests to this confidential email and our prayer team will pray for you: prayers@lindisfarne.nsw.edu.au
May we continue to be grateful for who we are and for all we have.

IMPORTANT - KInetic Bus Changes from Monday, 6 May
Effective from Monday, 6 May expanded services will be operating in the morning and afternoon for buses that currently service the Casuarina area. This will have an impact on other services, so we ask that all Mahers Lane Kinetic Bus users read all the information carefully.
Mahers Lane Morning Buses
As per the table attached, morning bus students will now be able to access services that stop at all locations listed. This includes two new services S142 and S143 which will support existing services S124, S123 and S114.
We kindly ask that students catch the earliest available bus, to ensure that the last bus in the morning is not over capacity, your support in regards to this is appreciated.
If a bus is full it will still stop to advise students of this, and will be in communication with any following buses.
Mahers Lane Afternoon Buses
As per the table attached, afternoon bus students will now be able to access services that stop at all locations listed. This includes an additional service S191 and the re-allocation of S184 to support the Casuarina area. These two new services will support existing services S170, S188 and S190 (often referred to as the overflow bus).
There is no longer any incentive for Casuarina students to catch S187 and S156. This should improve these services for students who only have these options, eg Cabarita, Pottsville and associated connections.
Bilambil students who currently access S171 from near Terranora Primary will now be able to access this service directly from Lindisfarne.
Staff will be working to advise students of these changes this week in preparation for these changes taking effect from Monday, 6 May 2024. Additional staff will be on duty in the afternoons whilst students get used the these changes.
Please view a copy of the notice from Kinetic with the new bus numbers and times.

School TV Special Report
School TV Special Report
As a result of the devastating events that recently unfolded at Westfield in Bondi Junction, and the Church in Wakeley, many families are still in a state of disbelief trying to comprehend how and why these incidents occurred. All of us have been affected in some way, with some being left more traumatised than others.
Although such incidents are rare, in today's digital age, where news spreads rapidly through social media, young people can be exposed to distressing information without even realising it. It's in these situations that it is vitally important for parents and carers to check in with their children. Being aware of what information they've been exposed to will hopefully minimise their emotional fallout in coming weeks.
We encourage you to use this Special Report as a resource to help your families and the wider community heal at such times when tragic or traumatic events occur.
SPECIAL REPORT: Trauma Recovery
Trauma in children significantly disturbs their sense of safety and normalcy, leading to substantial emotional and behavioural changes. Such disturbances often result from exposure to traumatic events, which may be exacerbated by continuous media coverage. This exposure can trigger stress, anxiety, and trauma, with varying recovery timelines due to the unpredictable nature of trauma's impact. Observing young people grappling with these effects can be highly distressing for parents and caregivers.
It's important to establish a nurturing environment to help restore a child's sense of security to help promote resilience. Active involvement in their recovery is essential, as is recognising the unique, personalised needs of each child in responding to trauma. Depending on their age, children may present with different symptoms, such as regressive behaviours in younger ones or withdrawal and agitation in older children and teens. It is important to monitor and manage the type of information children may access to reduce their emotional distress.
The brain stores traumatic events as powerful emotional memories, influencing behaviour through mechanisms beyond a child's conscious awareness. By providing young people with support and equipping them with coping mechanisms to handle uncertainty, parents and carers can greatly enhance a child's capacity to recover and build long-term emotional resilience.
This Special Report will help you identify a child experiencing trauma and how you can support them to overcome it.

The Round Square Heroes of Discovery - Junior School
This week at the Junior School, we have introduced our newest Round Square
Hero of Discovery, Compassionate Carlos.
Carlos is characterised by his empathy, kindness, understanding, and caring nature, displaying deep selflessness and a strong concern for the wellbeing of others.
In the classrooms, teachers are engaging students with Carlos’ Hero story, and leading discussions on how we can embody these character traits in various settings, including the classroom, the playground, at home, or within the community, to make the world a better place.
We look forward to seeing Compassionate Carlos’ traits shine among students throughout the Junior School over the coming weeks as we work together to build a community of little heroes together.

Children's Day
🎏Children’s Day🎏 子供の日
May 5th is a Day Just for Children in Japan! This week in Japanese classes, students learned about an exciting Japanese holiday that is celebrated on May 5th - Kodomo no Hi 子供の日 or Children’s Day. It is a Public Holiday in Japan and the final celebration in Golden Week.
This day was originally celebrated as “Boy’s Day,” but has since been transformed to be a day for all children. Children’s Day in Japan is known for its symbols and traditions that represent strength and courage. Families display koi carp flagsKoi Nobori 鯉のぼりand present their sons with a replica samurai helmetkabuto 兜 to be displayed in the home. Additionally, a well-known folktale called “Golden Boy” Kintarō 金太郎 KINTARO (ENGLISH) Animation of Japanese Traditional Stories illustrates the values that Japanese parents hope their sons will grow up to embody - strength, courage, and kindness.
As with all Japanese celebrations, food and music are important parts of the festivities. Chimaki is a traditional dish eaten on Children’s Day and comes in two varieties - sweet and savoury. Sweet chimaki might include fillings such as glutinous rice, sweet red bean gelatin, or kudzu (arrowroot) powder and is enjoyed as a snack or dessert. Savoury chimaki includes a mixture of sticky glutinous rice, meat, and vegetables. Some of the meats commonly used are chicken and pork, while vegetables might include young bamboo shoots, shiitake mushrooms, carrots, burdock root, chestnuts, or ginkgo nuts. Savoury chimaki is often enjoyed as an appetiser, snack, or meal.
Why not try making your own!

Japanese Genius Hour
🗾🧐⏳ Japanese Genius Hour 🗾🧐⏳
Welcome to "Japanese Genius Hour," an exciting elective for Year 7 and 8 students to explore the rich tapestry of Japanese culture, language, art, society and more! This DiscoverEd elective fosters creativity and independent learning, encouraging students to pursue their passions and share their discoveries with others.
Genius Hour gives students the freedom to explore topics they are genuinely interested in, promoting creativity and critical thinking. In this elective, students can take a 'deep dive' into any aspect of Japanese culture that fascinates them—from traditional art forms to modern pop culture, ancient history to contemporary inventions. They research a topic, explore it deeply, and ultimately create something to share that reflects their learning journey.
Student-Inspired Explorations
Our students have embraced this freedom to pursue their interests. Some have explored the vibrant world of Japanese art and animation, while others have delved into Japanese food culture, discovering the secrets behind sushi, ramen, and traditional tea ceremonies. Traditional clothing like yukatas and kimonos has also caught the imagination of many, inspiring them to learn about the fabrics, styles, and customs associated with these garments. Other students have immersed themselves in sumi-e (ink painting), honing their artistic skills, while some have focused on Japanese inventions and scientific discoveries, exploring Japan's innovative technologies.
Teachers' Learning Journeys
Our teachers are also embarking on their own learning journeys. Mr Davis, inspired by Hokusai's "36 Views of Mt Fuji," is creating his own collection of "Views of Mt Warning" and also exploring Studio Ghibli-style animation painting techniques. Mrs Godden is hand-sewing a yukata using traditional fabric and skills she learned in Japan, while Mr Cadman is exploring traditional Japanese poetry, delving into poignant haiku and tanka.
"Japanese Genius Hour" is an adventure into the heart of Japanese culture, with students and teachers discovering, creating, and sharing their passions. We look forward to showcasing the students' work as they complete their projects!

Senior School
From the Head of Senior School
This week I would like to revisit a familiar mantra I often emphasise in our assemblies: "Starting as you mean to go on." This principle is not just a catchy phrase but a fundamental approach to how we handle our educational and personal development in the Senior School.
The recent holiday break gave us all a much-needed opportunity to rest and reflect on the achievements of Term 1. It was a time to recharge our batteries and prepare ourselves mentally and physically for the demands of a new term. Now, as we return, it is crucial we channel this renewed energy into a strong start.
"Starting as you mean to go on" means setting the right tone from day one. It is about demonstrating through our actions that we are serious about our learning and personal growth.
In the Senior School, while we continuously look for ways to enhance our campus and teaching methods, the role our students, play in this journey is equally important.
Here are a few areas where students can make a significant impact:
Respectful Interactions: Treat everyone in the School community with respect. How we communicate with our peers and teachers sets the tone for our learning environment.
Punctuality: Arriving on time, whether it is to school or to any classes, shows that you value your education and respect the time of others.
Focus and Attention in Lessons: Engage actively with your lessons. Your enthusiasm and willingness to learn inspire your classmates and your teachers.
Presentation: Wear your uniform with pride. Your appearance reflects your respect for yourself and your school.
We must all strive to embody these values not just in the first few days or weeks but consistently throughout the term. I look forward to seeing all the wonderful ways the Senior
School students will "start as you mean to go on" and contribute to a positive school culture.
Together, we can make this term productive and rewarding for everyone.

2024 HSC Timetable
Today the 2024 HSC Timetable has been released and this has been shared with Year 12 students and families. Students are able to access their personalised timetable via their Students Online Account using their NESA number and the PIN emailed to them earlier this year. The HSC Languages Oral Exam timetable has also been released as well as the HSC Practical Exam timetable. It is very important that all Year 12 students login in the Students Online and ensure their personalised timetable reflects the subjects they are studying correctly. Students can contact lauren.ward@lindisfarne.nsw.edu.au with any issues.
2025 Curriculum Manuals will also be shared with Year 8 and Year 10 students and families. This signifies the arrival of an important time of year where students begin to increase their level of responsibility in determining their pathways here at school. For students entering Year 11 in 2025 in particular they need to carefully consider the subjects on offer in conjunction with their interests, passions, strengths and future goals. It is essential that families prioritise attending subject selection evenings in order to fully understand the information and choices provided:
Year 9 2025 Subject Selection Evening: 11th June 2024, 6pm
Year 11 2025 Subject Selection Evening: 17th June 2024, 6pm
As has been highlighted by Head of Senior School, Mrs Kate Cornell, previously, students in Year 9 2024 are also encouraged to very strongly consider completing Studies of Religion I as an accelerated subject in Year 10 2025, which is offered in an accelerated format. This allows Year 10 students to complete the Year 11 SOR curriculum within their current academic year, advancing to the Year 12 curriculum in Year 11.

A reminder to all Year 10 students who signed up for Natural Ability. Your testing is due to be completed by the 12th of May so that your results can be used for subject selection. Please ensure you have accessed your login details, that have been sent to your school email address.
Year 12 students interested in studying at the Australian National University in Canberra are encouraged to apply through their direct, early application process. A walkthrough of the process can be found here and further information can be found at this link. These applications are due by the 13th of May.
Griffith University’s Southbank Campus in Brisbane will hold its Open Day on Sunday the 19th of May from 10am - 2pm. This is a great opportunity to see what is on offer in the Creative fields and also explore the vast array of facilities. This is well worth attending for any interested students. This includes the Griffith Film School, Queensland Conservatorium, Queensland College of Art and Design and Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre.
On Monday 6th May the University of New South Wales’ Portfolio Entry applications for 2025 open. This offers an alternative entry pathway into Engineering related (including Computer Science) degrees as well as Arts, Design and Architecture degrees. The UNSW Portfolio Entry Scheme offers early conditional offers, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your passion and talent alongside your ATAR. Successful applicants will receive an early conditional offer with an adjusted ATAR entry requirement up to 10 ATAR points below the lowest selection rank for a specific degree or range of related degrees. Please see further information at this link. Applications for Round 1 close on the 22nd of July.

Camp Information Evenings
Embracing Adventure
As part of our commitment to holistic education and the personal development of our students, the Senior School is delighted to announce the upcoming camps for students in Years 9, 10, and 11. These camps are not just excursions; they are a pivotal part of our educational journey, providing unique opportunities for growth, learning, and creating lasting memories.
The Importance of Camps
Camps play a crucial role in the School’s educational philosophy. They provide a dynamic environment where students can step outside their comfort zones, tackle new challenges, and foster independence.
From building teamwork skills through group activities to enhancing personal resilience and problem-solving abilities, the experiences at camp are invaluable. They also allow students to connect with nature and engage in physical activities, which are essential for mental and physical well-being.
An Integral Part of School Life
We believe that the lessons learned on these camps extend far beyond the boundaries of traditional classroom education. They are about community building, leadership development, and self-discovery.
Each camp is tailored to the specific developmental needs and academic focuses of different year levels, ensuring that every student receives the most from their experience.
Parent Information Nights – Your Participation Is Key
Understanding the significance of these camps, we strongly encourage parents to attend the upcoming Parent Information Nights. These sessions are designed to provide detailed insights into the activities planned, the goals of each camp, and how they contribute to your child's education. Moreover, they offer a perfect platform for you to ask questions and address any concerns you may have.
The Parent Information Nights will take place online next week, ensuring convenience for all families.
This format allows parents to join from the comfort of their homes, making it accessible for everyone to be involved in preparing their child for this exciting part of their school journey.

Cricket
Douglas Shield Cricket final verse William Clarke College On Thursday, 2 May, Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School's cricket team faced off against William Clarke College in the Douglas Shield Cricket Grand Final at Bankstown.
Despite the early inclement weather which significantly spiced up the pitch, spirits were high as the two teams prepared for the showdown.
Lindisfarne, having won the toss, opted to bat first in challenging conditions. The team put up a valiant effort against a lively pitch, showcasing determination and skill. Charlie Evesson emerged as the top-scorer with a well-compiled 25 runs, closely followed by Jack O'Shea, who contributed a crucial 23 runs to the team's total. Together, the team reached a modest total of 105 runs, setting the stage for an intense second innings.
William Clarke College, on the other hand, demonstrated why they were formidable opponents, making quick work of the total set by Lindisfarne. Showing aggression and skill in equal measure, William Clarke managed to chase down the target in under 14 overs, losing only one wicket in the process.
Despite not clinching the title, playing in the Shield Final was a tremendous privilege and an invaluable experience for our Lindisfarne team. The match was not just a testament to the players' abilities but also a reflection of their hard work, dedication, and the spirit of cricket. The team and the coaching staff are immensely proud of what they have achieved, and this experience is seen as an important building block for future encounters.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Year 12 students, Charlie Evesson, Alec Lees, and Ryan Lamb, who have likely played their last games in the Baggy Blue. Their leadership and dedication have been invaluable to the team.
We eagerly anticipate the next season of the Douglas Shield, set to begin in Term 4.

Lindisfarne and the North Coast were well represented by several Lindisfarne students making the highest school NSW State competition.
Hunter Gaffney and Ned Simmonds both had amazing races and both made their respective individual finals. Hunter came 6th in the 12 yrs 50m freestyle. Ned touched in a close 5th in the 11 yrs 50m breastroke. Jack Sewell has developed some extra zip over the sprint distance this year - winning comprehensively in his 50m Backstroke! Remember, he is the defending Australian Champion already in the 100m event.
From my knowledge, the best ever Lindisfarne relay result too, with Ned Simmonds, Naish Morgan, Jack Sewell and Benji Eke
AFL
Congratulations to Obe Acharya and Harvey Johnston - both in Year 6, for making the CIS Primary AFL team! The boys will go to Albury in May to compete in the NSW PSSA AFL
Championships. From this tournament, a NSW team is selected to compete in the School Sports Australia AFL Championships in July. Well Done boys, AFLQ Schools Cup Boys and Girls Junior Division Wednesday saw the first round of the AFLQ Schools Cup for the Junior Boys and Girls at a soggy and waterlogged Byron Bay AFL complex. The junior division covers students in Years 7 to 9.
Lindisfarne fielded a team in both the boys and girls division and both teams battled hard all day and as a result made the Grand Final. The boys path was a little easier through to the grand final with 3 wins from their first 3 games. In the grand final they came up against a very well drilled Kingscliff. The final score of Kingscliff High School 31 to Lindisfarne 15 doesn’t really show how close the game was.
In the girls division, Lindisfarne started slowly losing their first game to Mount St Patricks by 4 points. To the girls credit, they were able to brush off the defeat to convincingly win their next 2 games by 19 points against Xavier and 42 points against Maclean, This meant a rematch in the final against Mount Saint Patricks and this time the girls were able to clinch a nail biting win by 1 point.
It's the end of the road for the junior boys team, but the girls will continue on to round 2 in mid-July.

Spotlight on Buzz Mecham
Buzz competed in the Baseball QLD State Titles. His team came home with the silver and he had an exceptional tournament.
He has now been invited to play and train with the Brisbane Bandits in their All Star Academy programme this month which is a great achievement.
Spotlight on Tyson Walk
Tyson travelled to Launceston in the school holidays to play in the Tennis U12 Tasmanian State Junior Championships Signature Series 500.
He played at a very high level, and also explored Tassie off court which is a beautiful part of Australia. Tyson was a finalist in the doubles, and finished 6th in singles.
Race Kayaking - Maiden Voyage
We're thrilled to announce the launch of our new Race Kayaking Program here at Lindisfarne! This week marked the maiden voyage for our students, who embarked on their first journey during Thursday's sport at the Lindisfarne boathouse on the banks of Cudgen Creek. Designed to introduce students to the sport of kayaking, our program focuses on skill development in its initial stages. From mastering the basics to refining techniques, participants will hone their abilities under the guidance of our experienced coaches.
We are delighted to have twelve enthusiastic participants on board, many of whom are members of local surf clubs. Our Race Kayaking Program offers these students a fantastic opportunity to further enhance their paddling skills, with a strong crossover between kayaking and surf sports.
Two exceptional coaches, Carsten Loemker and John Wilkie, guide our students. Their expertise and passion for the sport are invaluable assets to our program, and we're incredibly grateful for their commitment. We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Carsten and Natalie Loemker, as well as Mark Kennedy from Gibbons Surfcraft, for their generous donation of kayaks.
Their support has been instrumental in getting our program off the ground, and we couldn't be more thankful.
As the term progresses, our students will continue to build upon their skills, with technique sessions and sprint and endurance training on the horizon. We're excited to see our students grow and develop as they set their sights on competing in the Paddle Queensland State Sprint Titles on the Gold Coast from 8-10 November 2024.
There is also an opportunity for after-school sessions for senior school students wishing to refine their skills. Afternoon sessions are planned but not set in stone. Students must watch the daily notices as a lunchtime meeting to discuss after-school training will be held in the next few weeks.

2024 QLD RUGBY BALLYMORE CUP
Although not as successful results-wise as 2023 for our squads, the 2024 Ballymore Cup was a fantastic tournament for Lindisfarne across all three squads with a lot of growth and development being shown by the players. Our U13, U15 and 1st XV boys played multiple games over the Friday to Sunday 12-14th April at Southpine Sports Complex.
Many thanks have to go to the staff who attended, our physiotherapists and doctor for the tournament (Mrs Carly Jennary and Kyle Owens from Physio Place in Tweed and Mrs Inga Schimanski) and all the parents who came up to support and barrack for our boys.
The full list of results and wrap were as follows:
1st XV
Day 1
5-10 v St Peters Lutheran
24-5 v Faith Lutheran
Day 2
7-13 v Marist College Emerald
7-14 v Villanova College
Day 3
7-22 Faith Lutheran
This was a tough tournament for our 1st XV. We had a number of games where our boys struggled to score points despite being in great field position and creating a number of scoring opportunities. This was especially the case in our first and third games against St Peters Lutheran and Marist College Emerald. This led to a number of close losses and unfortunately, that is the way “the oval ball bounces” at times! Despite this, there were some great performances by a number of players over the weekend, and our captain Will Sullivan, Jack Kerridge, Flynn McCulloch, Bailey Le Brese and Charlie Sutton were all standouts. Alongside this we had a number of other younger players get a chance to experience 1st XV level rugby at the Ballymore Cup, which will bode well as we move into the Len Diett competition in Term 2.
U15
Day 1
7-12 v Chanel College
20-36 v Somerset College
Day 2
34-0 v St Peters Lutheran
17-17 v St James College
Day 3
17-24 v Somerset College (finished 4th in division)
The Lindisfarne Lions under-15s team embarked on their Ballymore Cup campaign with great anticipation, starting with a tough Friday schedule. Their first game was against Chanel College, the eventual winners of their division. It was a hard-fought contest, featuring some exciting running rugby from both teams. Despite their best efforts, the Lions lost 12-7, with a try scored against them on the final siren. Adam Price was remarkable in defense, making crucial tackles throughout the match, while Tucker Groves displayed impressive ball carrying. Their second game against Somerset College saw the Lions tackle relentlessly against much bigger opponents, but they learned a valuable lesson about tournament rugby: readiness from the start is crucial. Despite playing valiantly, luck wasn't on their side, and they lost 36-20.
Saturday's matches brought a mix of highs and lows for the Lions. The first game against St Peters showcased an outstanding display of running rugby. The backs played the ball wide, capitalizing on the strong carries and interplay from the forwards. This led to some of the best play from any under-15s team over the weekend, resulting in a commanding 34-0 victory. Standout performances came from Tom O'Brien, Teo Martin, and Rhys Jones. In their fourth game, the Lions faced St James in a match that ended in a 17-17 draw. After a big break between games, the Lions struggled at first, finding themselves down 17-0 at halftime. However, they rallied impressively in the second half, with Eden Humphries leading the charge. Humphries' conversion on the final whistle salvaged the draw and kept the Lions' spirits high.
The final game of the weekend was a rematch against Somerset College in the 3rd vs 4th playoff. The Lions started strongly, taking a 12-0 lead early in the first half. Somerset College fought back with a try just before halftime, and as the effects of a long weekend of rugby and game soreness began to set in, the Lions showed signs of fatigue. Somerset took advantage, scoring two tries in the last couple of minutes to win 24-17. Despite the loss, it was a great weekend for the Lions, who played under very hot conditions and demonstrated their tenacity. The players acquitted themselves well throughout the tournament and are eager to carry on their strong form for the rest of the rugby season.
U13
Day 1
24-0 v Kings Christian
15-7 v Faith Lutheran
Day 2
0-19 v St Patricks College
7-7 v Downlands College
Day 3
10-15 v Chanel College
**U13 Rugby Team Shines at Ballymore Cup**
The U13 rugby team recently participated in the prestigious Ballymore Cup, showcasing their talent and sportsmanship in a thrilling tournament. The team faced off against tough opponents, displaying grit and determination in every match.
On the first day of the tournament, the team experienced a challenging start with a loss against Kings Christian, with a score of 24-0. However, they quickly bounced back with an impressive win against Faith Lutheran, triumphing with a score of 15-7.
The second day brought more excitement as the team faced St Patrick's College, where they fought hard but unfortunately lost with a score of 0-19. Undeterred, the team showed their resilience in a closely contested match against Downlands College, ending in a 7-7 draw with Downlands scoring in the last minute of the match.
Despite the draw, the team managed to score the first try which secured their spot in the plate final.
In the plate final, the team faced off against Chanel College in a nail-biting match. Both teams displayed incredible skill and determination, but ultimately, our team fell short with a final score of 10-15.
Overall, the Ballymore Cup was a fantastic experience for the U13 rugby team, providing them with valuable lessons and memories that will last a lifetime. The team's hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship were evident throughout the tournament, making us proud to have such talented individuals represent our school. Congratulations to the U13 rugby team for their outstanding performance!

THE 2024 ARMIDALE SCHOOLS CARNIVAL
U12
Over the first weekend of the school holidays a squad of 20 Under 12’s headed away to compete in The Armidale School Rugby Carnival. This competition is the largest primary school aged rugby competition in the country and it was the focus of all our training in Term 1.
After a long bus trip down and a cold night in the boarding house, the squad were keen to get the ball rolling with some rugby. The squad played 5 games across the weekend
Match 1 v Highland Goats Rugby (0-0 draw)
A tense and hard fought match that saw our Lions on attack for most of the match. We weren’t quite able to ice our chances in the dewy conditions. Best on ground included George Taylor, Dean Arghyros and Sky Brebner
Match 2 v Scone Grammar (0-0 draw)
This was the hardest match of the weekend - a very physical match between 2 very evenly matched teams. Neither side had any decent chances to score, with the match played predominantly in between the 22’s. A grinding draw. Best on ground: Finn Jones, Charlie Dunn and Theo Midgley
Match 3 v Pacific Lutheran (29-5 win)
Tries: George Taylor 2, Channing Melville, Hunter Lloyd, Ben Dickens
Conv: Dean Arghyros, Charlie Dunn
A short turn around in matches and suddenly it all started to click. As our confidence grew, our performance followed. In the end this was a convincing victory and reward for a hard fought morning. Best on ground: Channing Melville, George Taylor and Harry Taylor.
Match 4 v Moree Rugby Club (10-5 win)
Tries: Crusoe Foster 2
Our final match for Saturday saw us play Moree Rugby Club. This was another hard fought match - with fatigue really starting to kick in. The team fought back from 0-5 at halftime to win the match thanks to a match winning 2 try performance from our Captain, Crusoe Foster, coming off the bench following an injury in the morning. Best on ground: Crusoe Foster, Charlie Dunn and Finn Jones
Match 5 v The Armidale School (70-0 win)
Tries: Ben Dickens 3, Crusoe Foster 2, Charlie Dunn 2, Sky Brebner, Hunter Lloyd, Casper Whitaker, Sid Beard
Conversions: Crusoe Foster 4, Dean Arghros
Our final match for the weekend was our most complete - with the team romping to a large victory. While our opposition battled bravely, our Lions put in a complete performance, scoring some scintillating tries to finish the weekend on the best possible note. Best on ground: Dean Arghyros, Ben Dickens, Hunter Lloyd
Our performances across the weekend saw us finish as Runners Up in our division. The squad walked away from the weekend undefeated with a points differential of +99. This is an incredible performance given where the squad started the term. The final match vs TAS was a great showing of everything we have worked on in preparation for the tournament, with some excellent team tries scored.
The MVP for the weekend will be announced on Assembly in Week 2, with the winner to be presented with a special TASRC Jersey.
A special thanks to Mr Dunn and Ms Farmer for their work preparing the squad and managing the touring party while we were away.
Congratulations to the entire squad for the performance. It is a great sign of things to come.

Monday After School Training
In 2024, our main training session outside of school time is on Monday after school from 1530-1645. Although we have had good numbers to our term 1 training sessions, rugby union is a team sport and we still need as many of our players to be in attendance week in and week out to grow the Lindisfarne rugby program in term 2. Hopefully, the car-pooling details will help this and if we can be of assistance in any way, please let us know.
Also, please note we will NOT be sending reminders for these training sessions (all players and families should assume our Monday afternoon training will ALWAYS BE ON), however we will let you all know in ample time if we need to cancel a session due to weather or other factors.
Training Attire
Students should also be in proper training attire (NOT school sports uniform) with mouthguard, boots and any other equipment they play with for every training session, including school sport. This requirement also includes integrated school sport on Thursday i.e., students should wear our rugby training top or similar and not the school sport polo at this time. Alongside this, students should have a towel and spare school uniform to change into in case there is wet weather.
Stack Team APP
The Stack Team app will be our Rugby Union program’s main form of communication for all our squads, with exception of U12 boys.
As a reminder, both parents and Boy’s U13, U15, 1st XVs and 7’s and Girl’s 7s students who have parental permission for smartphones will need to download the app and join the Lindisfarne Rugby Program in the app.
To download the Stack team app, use the following links:

Poetry in Action Incursion
Poetry in Action Incursion
On Tuesday, the Year 7 and 10 cohorts were fortunate to watch a presentation delivered by the Poetry in Action acting troupe. An innovative touring theatre company, Poetry in Action, is dedicated to unlocking the power of words for everyone.
The Year 7 cohort were treated to an exciting, engaging presentation relevant to their upcoming study of poetry later in Term 2. The presenters offered a diverse perspective on the importance of poetic expression, making complex techniques and concepts accessible for the Year 7s. Through acting, song and dance (and even some rapping!), the presenters took a fresh approach to the vocabulary that students hear and use daily. This performance not only informed, but entertained the eager cohort of Year 7 students.
The Year 10s viewed an informative presentation that illustrated the power of a great speech. The troupe demonstrated the art of rhetoric, practically displaying key persuasive features such as logos, ethos and pathos as well as rhyme and rhythm in an engaging way. Watching the group perform some of the most famous speeches in history was certainly a highlight, providing a tangible lens into the rhetorical devices that we focus upon in English.

Round Two has commenced with a tricky topic for our Open A team:
Integrity is more important than reputation
Lexi, Mia, Xan and Ella spent a gruelling hour in the short prep room unpacking their ideas and piecing together an argument for the negative side of this topic. These incredibly resilient students are commended on their teamwork, quick thinking rebuttals, and determination. Unfortunately their clever thinking and well-reasoned arguments were met with strong opposition, and the affirmative team was awarded the victory.
While they may not have taken home the victory, these students can walk away with their heads held high having represented our school with pride.. They accepted the verdict with grace, allowed the opposition the first chance to speak to the adjudicator for feedback, and even stayed back after the other team had left to ensure the tables and chairs were put in place, and the room was left neat and tidy. The team are commended on their ongoing demonstration of compassion, wisdom and respect in all of their words and actions.
Well done Open A debaters!
The Intermediate B team also fought valiantly this week, arguing the affirmative side of:
Parents should monitor their children’s online activities
The team’s coach, Mr Hall, described Ava as a “force of nature”, and also commended Elizabeth on a great effort in what was only her second debate ever, and Tahlia on her outstanding rebuttal efforts as third speaker. Their opponents were fierce and unfortunately the win was awarded to the negative side. The team are congratulated on representing Lindisfarne with pride, and we look forward to seeing them regroup for round 3.
Well done Inter B Debaters!

NCCS Challenge and KSF
Maths Minute
Developing good problem solving skills in Maths can be achieved in lots of different ways. Some of our students competed in the beginners NCCS challenge this term. This is a computational thinking challenge that supports problem solving in lots of ways. It ran for 5 weeks and we entered the competition for the first time. Whilst we only spent a small time in our Maths classes looking at this, some students took this challenge further and worked on it at home. To achieve a certificate level you needed to attempt a certain number of challenges. Well done to those students who achieved certificate level in this challenge. Particular mention goes to Maya Mueke, Harlem Selvey, Maksim Pursell and Lillia Abbey.
We have been busy with other things in Maths like the Kangourou sans Frontières (KSF) challenge and look forward to having a go at Round 1 BEBRAS, Olympiads and AMC challenges coming up next term.

Launching RS International Service Project December 24 in Vietnam
Launching RS International Service Project December 24 in Vietnam
We are pleased to announce the launch of the December 2024 Round Square International Service Project, which will take place in Vietnam.
This service project will welcome an international team of 60 students on two priority construction projects that will have a long-lasting, positive impact on the environment and the local community in Hoa Binh Province in Vietnam.
Students will help to construct a dam that will address the supply of water to farming land that is limited during the dry seasons, yet floods during monsoon. The new dam will improve crop productivity and therefore the income of local villagers. They will also install solar energy lighting poles as a safe and sustainable solution to a 2.5km stretch of road used to connect villages, that currently has no lighting, making it unsafe to use after dark.
In addition to working on the construction projects, delegates will be split into smaller groups to join in with local activities each day, including engaging with students at the school, learning dances and handicrafts, helping the farming community, and taking part in cooking classes, so that students can get to know their host community, share their skills, and learn new ones.
Students will develop their leadership skills throughout the Project, with each group taking turns to assume the role of Student Leader, taking responsibility for the organisation of the day, briefing your peers, giving an overview of safety and risk management, and organising a student rota to manage different chores at camp.
