Foreword

Dear Lindisfarne Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope everyone enjoyed a restful and rejuvenating holiday break. It is wonderful to see all our students back on campus as we embark on the second semester..

Firstly, I would like to thank all parents and guardians for your cooperation and patience as we navigate the traffic and road widening around our school. We understand that these changes may cause some inconvenience, but please be assured that these developments are aimed at making our school access routes more efficient and safer for everyone. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility during this period, and we are committed to keeping you informed and supported throughout these improvements.

This week marked the beginning of our HSC trials for Music, ahead of the larger trial HSC period for all Year 12 and Year 11 accelerant students. Over the next few weeks our students will engage in an examination period, providing important feedback on the progress and readiness for the upcoming HSC examination period next term. We wish them well in this process.

Today we farewelled our 12 international students from The Affiliated High School to Hangzhou Normal University, who have visited our school throughout the week. We have enjoyed hosting them, learning from each other, and building friendships that we hope will continue beyond their stay. We wish them well and safe travels back home.

On Wednesday evening, we had the pleasure of attending the HSC Dance Showcase. It was a wonderful evening that displayed our students' talent and dedication to the performing arts. The performances were both moving and impressive, highlighting the depth of our students' abilities and their passion for dance. I would like to thank the numerous staff involved in this program for their drive to bring these programs to the stage.

Thursday evening was an informative one for our Years 10 to 12 students and their parents as we held our ParentEd session titled You Choose Youth Road Safety. This session provided valuable insights into road safety, emphasising responsible decision-making and the importance of safe driving practices among our youth. It is crucial for our students to be well-informed, and such sessions are vital in fostering awareness and responsibility.

Today, we welcomed The Scots College from Sydney as part of their winter sports tour to the Gold Coast. Our U12's Stage 3 boys participated in two games, displaying excellent sportsmanship and athletic ability. It was fantastic to see our students engage in healthy competition while upholding the high standards of conduct we value at Lindisfarne.

Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate NAIDOC Week, a significant time to acknowledge and celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Next week will be filled with activities that foster understanding and respect for the indigenous cultures of Australia.

Please, mark your calendars for our upcoming FunFest on Saturday, August 24. This event promises a day full of fun, rides, food, and community engagement. FunFest is a wonderful opportunity for the entire Lindisfarne family to come together and enjoy a day of joy and fellowship. Be sure to get your tickets early for this much-anticipated school event. The distribution of FunFest Raffle Tickets to our students has commenced, with the first prize being an MG3 car. I hope that you will support the Parents and Friends as they work to support our students.

Enjoy the weekend ahead.

Chaplaincy

Chaplain's Column

Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to Term 3

It’s a great joy to welcome everyone back to Term 3 after an extended period of holidays. We trust you had a refreshing time and have made a great start to the Term. We are grateful to the staff and all those who work behind the scenes to get things ready for us. May the Lord bless them for their work, and may He grant us a fruitful, productive, safe, enjoyable and fun Semester ahead.

A special welcome to The Reverend Lyndon Mulholland who formally began his ministry this term as the School’s second Chaplain. Given the numerical growth in student and staff population, the Chaplaincy team is being expanded to fully cater for the spiritual needs of our community. Chaplains collaborate with the wellbeing team and staff to attend to the holistic needs of all our students, staff and families. Please give Rev Lyndon the usual Lindisfarne welcome and hospitality.

I extend the same welcome to all the staff and students who joined our community for the first time this week: may you find kindness in all that you meet at Lindisfarne.

Spiritual Gym and Family Eucharist Service on Sunday, August 4 2024

You’re warmly invited to join our School community in the Mahers Lane Chapel on Sunday, August 4 for a ‘Spiritual Gym’ Service. Refreshments will begin at 4.30pm, followed by a Service of Eucharist at 5pm, concluding at about 6pm. Please come along as we entrust this new Semester to God’s blessings, guidance and protection for our students, staff and families. All are welcome.

A Prayer for the Olympics and Paralympics (from the Australian Liturgical commission).

God of all the nations on earth,

bless and protect the planners, participants, officials and spectators

of the Olympic Games and Paralympics.

In these days of striving and celebration,

inspire us to work for a world of justice and peace,

and to proclaim your everlasting victory over sin and death,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A special prayer for Jeff Dunne, our year 11 student competing in Paris. May he do his best and compete well.

May we continue to be grateful for who we are and for the blessings that surround us.

The Reverend Constantine Osuchukwu

Chaplain

Introduction of the Reverend Lyndon Mulholland

G’day everyone,

My name is Reverend Lyndon Mulholland and I am delighted to be joining Reverend Constantine as part of the Chaplaincy team here at Lindisfarne.

I have been involved with Lindisfarne for the past eight years on the School Council and have seen the School go from strength to strength under Mr Marquardt’s leadership, so when the opportunity arose to join the Chaplaincy team, I jumped at it.

During my time on the School Council, I was the Rector of the Anglican Parish of Murwillumbah. My wife, Anna-Mieke, is the Coordinator of the Arts at Mount Saint Patrick Primary School. My youngest, Joshua, is in Year 5, and my eldest, Jack, has been in Year 7 here at Lindisfarne since the start of the year.

We moved to our new home in Terranora last week just down the street from Reverend Constantine. It has been tremendous shadowing him for the past week and meeting many of you as I try to commit as many names to memory as possible, so if I ask for your name again (and again), please forgive me.

Whilst Reverend Constantine and I will be working together closely we anticipate that he will focus more on the Junior School and me the Senior School as we share the Middle School.

My office is in the Wellbeing Centre just over the hall from Reverend Constantine’s office so if you would like to pop in for a chat you are most welcome.

Please be assured that Reverend Constantine and I are here for you all, both students and staff, so if you need our assistance in any way feel free to ask.

I would like to pray for you all as we begin term three:

Lord Jesus, look after our students and staff and keep them in your care as we commence term three.

Give all students a thirst for knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. May their minds be ready to learn. Open their ears, hands and hearts to receive your gifts and help them to use these gifts for the good of all. Amen.

FunFest - Win a Car

FunFest, the Lindisfarne Parents and Friends School Fair, is fast approaching and will be held on Saturday, 24 August at the Mahers Lane campus.

One of the major events at FunFest is the Car Raffle. This year, we are raffling off the amazing MG3 hatch, valued at $19,990, supplied by Victory Organisation Group.

Each family will be given a book of tickets to sell, which will be sent home with the oldest child. Each book contains five raffle tickets, with the first four (4) to be sold at $25 each. The fifth ticket in each book is a ‘free family ticket’ to be filled in once the family has sold the first four (4) tickets in the book. You must sell all the other tickets to redeem the final ticket.

The book and the money are then returned to reception at either campus, ready for the raffle draw at FunFest. As an extra incentive, every family that returns their fully sold book will also be entered to win a PS5 donated by JB Hi Fi, our technology partners.

To assist families, they can return the money from fully sold books online by using the QR Code below, or by clicking on this link.

https://www.trybooking.com/CTWXE

This will help minimise the number of students coming to school with money. Please note individual tickets cannot be redeemed online.

If you want more chances to win, you can request additional books by emailing smckinley@lindisfarne.nsw.edu.au

The distribution of raffle books has commenced today and will continue early next week. Please follow these simple steps to support the Lindisfarne Parents and Friends.

1: Check with the oldest in the family to confirm if they have their raffle book

2: Sell the first four tickets for $25 each ($100 total)

3: Fill in the fifth ticket with our thanks for supporting this raffle

4: Return the $100 and the raffle book to Reception at either campus. Use the online
payment option where possible (QR Code below).

5: Come to FunFest on Saturday, 24 August

6: Be in the running WIN a car or a PS5

PLEASE NOTE: All unsold raffle books must be returned.

Thank you for supporting the Lindisfarne Parents and Friends Association as they work to support our students.

From the Acting Head of the Junior School - Gratitude and Positivity

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope all of our families had a rejuvenating break and some time together over the past three weeks. As we gear up for the start of the new term, with lots of exciting events and learning activities, it has been wonderful seeing everyone’s smiling faces at drop off and pick up, as well as students settling straight back into their learning routines.

The start of every new term brings with it a sense of renewal and opportunity. It's a chance for our students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. This term, our first assembly provided me with an opportunity to read a section of a book that I will be reading to every class over the next two weeks. ‘The Little Things,’ written by Caryl Hart. It enabled me to start a conversation with all of our students about the importance for us to focus on gratitude and positive thinking throughout our Junior School. Research consistently shows that cultivating gratitude not only improves mental health but also enhances overall well-being.

The book helps students see that gratitude begins with recognising and appreciating the little things that happen in our every day. Whether it's acknowledging the beautiful sunshine warming your face, the support of a friend, the first smiley face you see in the morning when you arrive and appreciating the beauty of our surroundings. Every act of gratitude contributes to a more positive environment for learning and growth.

I have challenged students to think about what they are thankful for each day and I have also encouraged them to tell me any of the little things that have sparked happiness in their day, when they see me in the playground or in their classrooms. I encourage you to join us in this journey at home by discussing at least one thing that they are thankful over dinner or during your drive home and provide them with an example from you.

Here's to a fantastic start to the new term filled with gratitude, positivity, and growth!

Relaunch of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

After a period of dormancy, our garden at Sunshine Ave is ready to bloom once again!

Already classes have been super busy planting BIGs (Beneficial Insect Gardens); Italian, Mexican and Asian cuisine seedlings as well as a very special First Fleet lettuce variety.

So what is the SAKG Program?

Highly acclaimed chef, restauranteur and author Stephanie Alexander’s preoccupation with the way children do, or do not, learn about food led her to develop a comprehensive gardening and cooking program at an inner-city Melbourne school over 20 years ago. This impactful program has now expanded to over 1000 schools across Australia. Its aim is to provide a pleasurable hands-on introduction to food education by teaching children to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal and delicious food.

What does this look like at Lindisfarne?

Three interrelated learning spaces - garden, kitchen and classroom working in harmony. Staff collaborating to plan activities, menus and an integrated curriculum around the garden’s seasonal growing cycle. Learnings from the children’s experiences in the garden, underscored by hands-on, real-life cooking and gardening activities, reinforcing the academic curriculum, fully utilising the amazing garden, as well as our fully equipped indoor and outdoor kitchens and even the chook pen.

Special thanks to Lesley and Peter Fydler for their assistance in preparing the garden. Keep an eye out for happenings from the garden and kitchens, along with ways you can support our growth!

The Round Square Heroes of Discovery - Junior School

This week at the Junior School, we have introduced our newest Round Square Hero of Discovery, Sustainability Suki.

Characterised by her genuine care for the environment, Suki encourages us to respect living things, use the earth’s resources responsibly and protect our precious world.

In the classrooms, teachers engaged students with Suki’s Hero story, leading discussions on how we can embody these character traits in various settings, including the classroom, the playground, at home, or within the community, to make the world a better place.

Suki made a special appearance in our playground this week, joining our Year 4 leaders to plant an endangered tree. Thank you to Mrs Leary and Patrick for organising this opportunity!

We look forward to seeing Sustainability Suki’s traits shine among students throughout the Junior School over the coming weeks as we work together to build a community of little heroes.

YEAR 6 CANBERRA TRIP

Thank you to those parents who were able to attend the Year 6 Canberra Trip Information Evening on Tuesday night.

This important trip will take place from August 19 to 22, and provide the students with an in-depth understanding of the establishment and evolution of Australia's federal government. This hands-on experience is a crucial part of their education, bridging classroom teachings with real-life understanding of Australia's nation-building, democratic processes, and immigration history.

A range of activities awaits the Year 6 students, including tours of the Parliament House, Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia, National Museum of Australia, and the Royal Australian Mint. They will also enjoy an evening at Questacon, a drive through the Embassy & Lodge District and the Parliamentary Triangle and Anzac Parade. Other planned visits include the National Arboretum Canberra, the National Archives of Australia, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Mount Ainslie Lookout, Zone Bowling, and Cycle Canberra.

We'd like to gently remind parents to submit the necessary Dietary Requirements and Student Medication Authority forms as soon as possible if they are still outstanding.

Tuesday, 20 August in Week 5 will see our annual Book Week costume parade take place, once again. The theme for 2024 is Reading Is Magic, and the featured artist is Australian illustrator and author Jess Racklyeft who illustrated the 2022 CBCA Picture Book of the Year Iceberg (written by Claire Saxby).

Please start thinking about your child’s costume for this fun event.

Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope all students and families are well-rested and rejuvenated after the three-week break. The holidays were certainly a busy time for the Senior School students and staff, filled with a number of activities and learning opportunities.

The inaugural Food Technology and Textiles Tour to Italy was a tremendous success, offering our students a terrific experience in culinary and textile arts. Under the leadership of Mrs Hayley McDonald, our students explored Italy's rich cultural heritage, gaining insights and inspiration that will undoubtedly enhance their academic and creative pursuits. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the accompanying staff for their dedication and excellent guidance throughout the tour.

Our annual ski trip to Perisher was another highlight of the holiday period. Despite some initial concerns about the ski conditions, we were fortunate that they improved during the week. The students enjoyed a week on the slopes, all under the leadership of Mrs Cathy Myers. Her commitment and organisation ensured that the trip was enjoyable for all involved.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to our HSC teachers who dedicated their time to run invaluable workshops for our Year 12 students during the break. These sessions provided crucial support as our seniors prepare for their Trial Examinations. Over the three weeks, a variety of workshops and courses were offered, including RSA and Barista courses, demonstrating the breadth of opportunities available to our Senior School students. These experiences are testimony to the incredible support and resources our school provides to help our students succeed.

On Wednesday night, the Dance Showcase was a wonderful event, demonstrating the progress our HSC dancers have made in preparation for their Trials. The performances were beautiful, reflecting the hard work and dedication of our dancers, including those from as early as Year 5. A special thank you to all the dancers who participated and made this event so special.

As we look forward to another busy term, our focus on academic excellence remains steadfast. This continues to be a focal point for the Senior School as we strive for strong HSC results. I am confident that our students will continue to apply themselves diligently, aiming to achieve their best in all their endeavours.

Finally, next week, we will celebrate NAIDOC Week, a significant event in the School calendar. This is an opportunity for our community to engage wholeheartedly in celebrating Indigenous culture. I encourage all students to participate in the events organised by our First Nations Cultural Engagement Coordinator, Ms Katrina Singh. These activities provide a valuable chance to learn about and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of Indigenous Australians, fostering a deeper understanding and respect within our school community.

What a terrific school we belong to, offering such diverse and enriching experiences to our students. Here’s to a productive and successful Term 3, filled with growth, achievement, and celebration.

You Choose Youth Road Safety

Last night, our parents and senior students experienced a profoundly impactful presentation by Melissa McGuiness from You Choose Youth Road Safety. Melissa shared her deeply personal story of losing her son to a road accident, providing a heartfelt and eye-opening perspective on the consequences of unsafe driving. Such evenings are testimony to the great success of our ParentEd program, bringing crucial awareness and education to our community. I commend these sessions to all parents and hope for continued support in our efforts to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students. One parent shared, "I just wanted to express my gratitude and thanks for hosting Melissa from You Choose. It was an extremely powerful and moving presentation. What a gift for the people that attended."

AI Student Forum Planned by Lindisfarne Students

In June, a group of our enthusiastic students visited the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to kick start planning for the upcoming ‘AI Student Forum’. This event, set to take place on September 9 at QUT Kelvin Grove, is a unique initiative hosted in partnership with QUT. What makes it truly special is that it is designed by students, for students. More than 200 attendees are expected, drawing students from schools across South East Queensland.

During their visit to QUT, our students engaged in brainstorming sessions, collaborated with university mentors, and developed innovative ideas to make the forum both educational and engaging. The forum aims to provide a platform for students to explore the latest advancements in AI, discuss its impact on society, and share their perspectives on the future of this transformative technology.

Stay tuned for more updates as our students continue to work diligently on this exciting project. We look forward to seeing their hard work come to fruition and witnessing the vibrant discussions and ideas that will emerge from the forum. Lindisfarne students, leading the way in shaping the future of AI!

Sport News

The Winter Solstice was over one month ago now, and Semester 2 has begun. We will be freewheeling towards Spring in no time!

Straight off the bat, we have had sports running out the door this week: Border Schools Athletics, NCIS Netball, NSW 7’s rugby, and Football and Rugby friendlies vs. Scots College.

Our Futsal representative kids head to Coffs Harbour for the NSW Champion of Champions next week. There are major Bill Turner football matches to look forward to - with our boys needing to knock over Oxley State High (Tamworth) on 6 August. A win in this game will see our boys join our girls in the group of Final 16 teams nationwide.

Our hardworking Volleyball squads are preparing for the QLD Schools Volleyball Cup in a fortnight. Likewise, it is Touch Football season now, with our squads heading off to numerous events over the course of the term.

NCIS Athletics is beginning to bubble along on our radar now, in addition to numerous other sporting events.

Mrs Danni Norman (two left of the Cup behind the table) - in her final term of maternity leave- scored a critical try in her team's victory over the Touch Blacks in the UK's 2024 Touch Football World Cup. Congratulations, Mrs Norman! Coincidentally, the men's team beat the Touch Blacks, too - in which her husband, Pete Norman, played.

NSW All Schools Cross Country

On Tuesday, 23 July, the NSW All Schools PSSA Cross Country event was held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. Lindisfarne was well represented with some outstanding performances. Elle Down (year 3) had to compete in an age group (10 years) and came first. Elle is nine years of age, racing up an age group, an amazing performance, and I can't wait till next year when she races in her age group. Andie Buchan (year 5) came second, qualifying her for Nationals in Victoria next month. She was thrilled and ran a PB. Milla Poulsen (year 7) came 15th out of 107 girls! She only missed out by five places for nationals, but she has set herself a goal for next year! Well done to other participants William Middleton (Year 5) who made the top 20. William is a very talented and determined athlete, someone to keep an eye out in the coming years. You should all be so proud of yourselves for these great achievements.

NCIS - MTB

On Thursday, June 27th, approximately 80 students from NCIS Schools competed in Mountain Biking in the Wedding Bells State Forest near Woolgoolga. The day started with a heavy shower of rain, which added to the challenges of the tracks, which had lots of mud. Students had to ride across 3 different tracks to gain an overall time, which then gave them a ranking within their division.

Lindisfarne was well represented across all the age groups, with special mention to Isa and Sofie Soenen, who finished 1st and 2nd in the Junior girls' Division.

Border School Athletics

On Tuesday, July 23rd, 31 students from Lindisfarne participated in the Border School Athletics Gala Day. This exciting event featured students from years 7 through 12 who are set to join the NCIS in Coffs Harbour next month.

Students had the opportunity to develop their skills and practice in their events at Griffith University's impressive facilities. Our school's athletes demonstrated remarkable talent and dedication, leading Lindisfarne to a commendable third-place finish. Their display of exceptional sportsmanship was a standout aspect of the day.

A highlight of the event was the relay race, in which nearly our entire school eagerly volunteered to form teams and compete. It was a thrilling experience that showcased the spirit and enthusiasm of our students. We extend our congratulations to St Andrew’s Lutheran College, which was victorious on the day, and to Hillcrest Christian College, which finished in a well-deserved second place.

Thank you to all who participated and supported our athletes. We look forward to many more successful events in the future, and competing at NCIS in August.

Tennis

Tyson Walk  and Poppy Sexton were both selected to represent North East in the Tennis NSW Regional State League Round 2 in Sawtell. Tyson was captain in the U11 boys team, and Poppy represented our U13 girls team. Both players dominated in their games and contributed points to our team.

Unfortunately we were only able to play 2 Rounds on one of the days, with the next day being a washout. Northumberland Region was declared as the winner, with most games won in all matches.

Spotlight on Taliah Rice

From 23-25 June, Taliah (Year 5) and her Gold Coast United U12 girls team took on all 21 other Academy teams in her age group from all across Queensland in the FQ Junior Cup.

The girls won all their games bar one and were able to take out the Junior Cup in the Grand Final with a 3-1 win with Taliah putting in the final 3rd goal to ensure there was no comeback. It was a very tough competition but a great experience which would have been invaluable as they took part in the Sydney FC Cup during the holidays.

NSW State Title - Surfing

During the holidays we had the NSW High Schools State Surfing Titles run their course in Coffs Harbour. Lindisfarne was represented by some very capable young teams:

Our Junior girls Fray Hutchinson and Malia Watson were knocked out in the first round - which was a semi-final.

The Junior boy's team of Lachlan Arghyros and Bowie Robinson came 3rd in the final, well-done, lads!

Our Open Girls took out 1st place - congratulations to Ava Arghyros and Eve Daniel!

Finally, our Senior boys were knocked out in their semi-final after winning their first heat and quarter-finals with good wave scores.

Congratulations to all participants!

Table Tennis Gala Day(s)

For those students thinking they are up to minor competition standard Table Tennis - there are two looming Gala Days:

Years 5 and 6 - WEDNESDAY 18 September

Years 7 to 10 - THURS 19 September

Each team will consist of three players, and games will be played in a round-robin style competition – singles & doubles.

Charlie Dunn, Sky Brebner, and Crusoe Foster proudly represented Lindisfarne at the Far North Coast in the NSW U12’s Rugby State Championships during the school holidays. Over an intense three days of footy in Sydney, they played exceptionally well, showcasing their skill and determination. Their hard work paid off as they secured victory in the Country Championship! Well done boys!

Spotlight on Chloe Dinnen

Chloe spent half of her school holidays representing Australia in the South Pacific Futsal Tour in Fiji. The girls played amazingly against some very tough competition. Chloe scored 3 goals in her very first game representing her country and finished the tour as the top goal scorer for Australia in her age, which is incredible. Well done Chloe!

Spotlight on Florence, Hunter and Myla Gaffney

During the school holidays, Florence, Hunter and Myla represented Currumbin Surf Club at the QLD Pool Rescue Championships. They all did an amazing job; the results are as follows:

Florence competed as an U/10 in the U/11 division:

3rd - 100m patient tow

Hunter U/12

1st - 100m obstacle race

1st - 10m line throw

3rd - 50m brick carry

Myla U/14

1st - 200m obstacle race

1st - 100m manikin tow

1st - 50m manikin carry

2nd - U14-15 manikin relay

Hunter and Myla now have the opportunity to go on to compete at Aussies later in August. Congratulations girls on some great achievements.

CIS 16’s girls Rugby League

During the first week of the holiday, Tiggi Groves (Year 11) participated in the Australian U/16 schoolgirls competition in Port Macquarie. Tiggi was named co-captain of the competition, which was very exciting. Unfortunately, the week was full of rain, so games were moved and cancelled. It was a great experience with a lovely group of girls and coaches/support staff.

The team finished in 4th position. Tiggi is looking forward to tackling the open girls competition next year.

Spotlight on Astrid Young

During the school holidays, Astrid Young (year 8) participated in the National Artistic Championships - Juvenile Girls Free Skating and took 2nd Place. Congratulations, Astrid, for your hard work and dedication.

TERM 3 UPDATE

As we head to Term 3, our Lindisfarne rugby program focus shifts from XVs to 7s for the boys. We will have boys 7s squads for the following age groups: U13, U14, U15, U16 and U18 and have a number of tournaments scheduled to compete in. Students that have not been selected in these squads are still more than welcome to attend the Monday PM training and Thursday integrated school sport training sessions and if there is enough demand, we will try to enter multiple teams in tournaments for the younger age groups. Please check the Key Dates in this document HERE. In particular mark the NSW Regional (1st August) and State Finals (18th September, if qualify) and QLD All Schools 7s (26-27th October) as well as the Rugby Captains Dinner (26th September) in your calendars. Also, for all NSW Far North Coast club rugby players, please note that the QLD Rugby Sunshine Coast 7s tournament is on Friday 23rd August and if you cannot make this tournament, please inform your respective coaches ASAP.

RECENT GAMES

ST JOHN’S COLLEGE WOODLAWN

On Thursday 27th June, our 1st XV hosted St John’s College Woodlawn to play our last Len Diett Cup fixture for Term 2.

1st XV 17-12

In our final game for the season, and despite being without our captain Will Sullivan and Jesse Bravington who were away on NSW AICES representative duties, our squad started very strongly and dominated Woodlawn in the first 20 minutes with tenacious defence. This period of dominance ended up with Lindisfarne going into halftime with a 12-7 lead. In the second half, our boys struggled to find a rhythm initially and Woodlawn came back to even the scores at 12-12 on the back of some quick thinking from their inside backs. After withstanding a large amount of attack from Woodlawn, we then finished strongly scoring a great try in the last 5 minutes to secure our unbeaten record against Woodlawn 17-12.

Cimmaron Crawford, who had one of best games in Lindisfarne colours and was instrumental in our winning the game with two tries, was a standout. He was ably supported by Cash Crawford and Abel Itty, who both had some great runs with ball in hand, and Flynn McCulloch, whose passing and kicking has shown tremendous improvement this year. Congratulations also go to our other Year 12 1st XV boys, Jack Kerridge, Kai O’Sullivan, Taj Krasna who helped us win their last 1st XV game of the year.

INTRA-SCHOOL GAMES

We also had a number of intra-school games (boys XVs and girls 7s) as curtain raisers for our 1st XV that were played in great spirit and enterprising fashion.

Monday After School Training

In 2024, our main training session outside of school time is on Monday after school from 1530-1645 and this remains the same in Term 3. Although we have had good numbers to our term 1 and 2 training sessions, rugby union is a team sport and we still need as many of our players to be in attendance week in and week out to grow the Lindisfarne rugby program in term 3. Hopefully, the car-pooling details will help this and if we can be of assistance in any way, please let us know.

Also, please note we will NOT be sending reminders for these training sessions (all players and families should assume our Monday afternoon training will ALWAYS BE ON), however we will let you all know in ample time if we need to cancel a session due to weather or other factors.

Training Attire

Students should also be in proper training attire (NOT school sports uniform) with mouthguard, boots and any other equipment they play with for every training session, including school sport. This requirement also includes integrated school sport on Thursday i.e., students should wear our rugby training top or similar and not the school sport polo at this time. Alongside this, students should have a towel and spare school uniform to change into in case there is wet weather.

Stack Team APP

The Stack Team app will be our Rugby Union program’s main form of communication for all our squads, with exception of U12 boys.

As a reminder, both parents and Boy’s U13, U15, 1st XVs and 7’s and Girl’s 7s students who have parental permission for smartphones will need to download the app and join the Lindisfarne Rugby Program in the app.

To download the Stack team app, use the following links:

● iOS: https://www.teamapp.com/ios-ap...

● Android: https://www.teamapp.com/androi...

Once downloaded, please search for 'Lindisfarne Rugby Program' and request to join.

Lindisfarne Rugby X Bond University Colts - Front Row Training

Our Lindisfarne Rugby Program is very lucky to have been given a standing invitation for any of our front row players to train with Bond University Colts on Wednesday nights as a part of their units block. This block is a 35 min block starting from 1845 with lineout primers and then moving into scrum work from 1900. If you are interested in this opportunity, please let us know and we can pass on more details.

2024 Kokoda Challenge

On a chilly Saturday morning while most were still tucked up in bed our Kokoda walkers ventured out to start their events.

First away was our 4 x 96 km teams with roughly 24-30 hours of walking ahead of them. They walked through day, night, and day again to cross the finish line sometime on Sunday morning. Along the way, they battled sore feet, blisters, cramps, aching muscles and the biggest mental battle of their short lives. Once it's dark it’s 13 hours of walking through pitch dark with a torch circle your only source of light. Along the way, these teams were supported at 4 x 20 min stops. Caring parents nurtured blisters, kept them warm and fed, and hustled them back out into the cold so they wouldn't get too comfy. The longest part is the Nerang State Forest. The sun has risen and you know the finish line is close but it takes forever to get there as your legs have slowed so much. We are incredibly proud the 96km walkers, their leaders and the parents who supported their children throughout. Over 159 of the 900 entrants withdrew during the course and only 23 teams finished with all members. Just a small insight into the gruelling challenge that it is.

The 48km walkers took off at 10 am. The journey while half the length was still nothing to be understated as it involved two of the big five climbs and given the age of some of these students the challenge was almighty. Guided by their leaders and with two supported crew stops, our 5 x 48km teams walked through the day and well into the night with most teams finishing around the 12-13 hour mark. It has been wonderful to hear how much these walkers loved the challenge and are ready to take on the 96km next year.

Finally, our 30km walkers, taking their first attempt at the GC course headed off about 1 pm. These Year 8 students had well and truly prepared for this course and took on the challenge with great enthusiasm. While still a challenge physically and mentally, they made it look easy. We know these students are already keen for the 48 next year and will be our 96 km teams in the years to come.

Our next adventure will see 9 students tackle the Kokoda Trek in Papua New Guinea in September. This will involve 9 days of walking, climbing and descending over 5000 metres all while carrying a 12 kg pack. With their Kokoda fitness behind them and 8 weeks ahead of PNG training we have no doubt they will be well and truly ready.

This year over 200 students from 7-11 walked in a Kokoda event. We look forward to seeing more students involved in Kokoda in 2025.

All students will be acknowledged at a coming assembly but it is fitting to mention the 96km teams with their incredible finish times.

Kokoda Challenge - A Reflection

The Kokoda Challenge is a gruelling event that tests participants' physical and mental endurance while honouring the sacrifices of Australian soldiers during World War II. It serves as a reminder of the importance of resilience, teamwork, and determination in taking on and overcoming challenges, such as the soldiers who were given little chance of success in the thick Papuan jungle. The focus is on completing the gruelling 30km, 48km or 96km course as a team, rather than pushing to finish first. Those who take on the Challenge experience a transformative journey that pushes their limits and leaves a lasting impact, the culmination of many early Sunday mornings of preparation.

Having just completed my first Challenge (albeit 30km not 96km), I was struck by the perseverance of our team Lindisfarne 13 and others. After the initial excitement at the starting line with hundreds of eager participants, the challenges began: sore feet, hunger, thirst, bad light, wrong turns, and at times the temptation was there to sit down, stop moving and call an Uber to escape the Nerang Hinterland. However, crossing the finishing line 9 hours later brought an incredible sense of accomplishment. There were high fives, big smiles and a great sense of camaraderie, with team members helping each other to overcome challenges and make it across the finishing line.

As our students commence Semester 2, there is a lot of inspiration that can be drawn from the Kokoda Challenge. Academically, socially and mentally, our young people will be faced with different challenges throughout this term and at times they might feel that it would be easier to simply give up or ‘go slow’. When completing assignments, interacting with others in the playground and participating in co curricular events, I implore all of our students to revisit the goals they set for themselves at the start of the year and to build strong and helpful routines to achieve these.

Some areas to focus on:

  • Ensuring a good night’s sleep

  • Charging mobile phones and devices outside the bedroom at night

  • Bringing a healthy lunch to school and drinking lots of water

  • Packing school bags the night before

  • Making arrangements to arrive at school before 8.20am for Tutor Group

  • Checking blazers and correct uniform for the day

  • Being proactive in reaching out to teachers and friends for help

Gold Coast Debating Update

The Junior B LAG2 Team are celebrating a well earned victory, arguing the negative side of the topic:

Books are better than movies

Charlotte, Aria, and Noah are commended on speaking confidently and sharing convincing arguments. Their team work and resilience under the high stakes pressure of short prep debating served them well. Congratulations Junior B Debaters!

The Intermediate A Debating Team fought valiantly but unfortunately lost by a narrow one point margin arguing the negative side of the topic:

Olympic Games are worthwhile

Tessa, Ben and Alex worked incredibly well together, and drew connections to controversial issues such as gender discrimination in uniforms and the economic impact of hosting the Olympics. Despite a disappointing result they are commended on the teamwork, resilience and innovative thinking that they have demonstrated. Well done Intermediate A Debaters!

A Day in B Block

Welcome to the English classrooms of B Block. This space, whilst being amidst the construction for exciting new additions to our school, is an oasis of literary wonder and exciting learning endeavours. Our English teachers are constantly updating and reimagining the learning resources that are available to students in their classrooms. These materials offer a calming and educational learning environment that encourages students to interact with the learning resources and make the most of their lessons. A few snapshots of exciting units of work and the classroom displays that students are engaging with in years 8-10 can be found below.

Year 8 students are completing a novel study on the young adult fiction novel, We Were Liars by E.Lockhart. These physical resources help students to connect their understanding of the novel with something tangible and accessible.

In year 9, students are entering the dystopian worlds imagined by Suzanne Collins and Lois Lowry in The Hunger Games and The Giver. These displays will change and adapt with the students as they discover more of the world as seen in their novels.

Year 10’s are being launched into the dark and foreboding world of Macbeth and looking at the human condition as explored by Shakespeare in the 17th century. Students are enjoying playing their parts in class read-alouds and connecting the ever-present themes explored in Shakespeare’s work to our modern world.

Visual Arts Educator Professional Development

Visual Arts Educator, Ms Jesse Harrison has returned from a transformative professional development course that promises to elevate the school’s Visual Arts program to new heights. The intensive one-week workshop, led by renowned Australian artist and National Art School lecturer Ebony Russell, immersed participants in the challenging yet rewarding world of porcelain clay, lustre techniques and complex mould making.

Held at the prestigious National Art School in Sydney, the fully booked course offered a unique opportunity to learn from Russell who is an industry leader and redefines the boundaries of ceramic art. Ebony Russell’s practice, known for its exploration of femininity, fertility, relationships, and challenging the notion of 'craft' in the art world provided a rich context for understanding how to imbue personal narratives into ceramic works.

Ms Harrison was particularly impressed by the course’s focus on technical expertise, including complex mould making and the safe handling of plaster, gold and other lustrous glazes. In Ms Harrison’s words; “The level of detail achievable with porcelain clay was astonishing and I’m excited to share these new skills with our students to help them discover the endless possibilities of this medium.”

The workshop also delved into the broader implications of ceramic art, discussing how to communicate complex ideas through form and material. This knowledge will be invaluable in guiding students to develop their own artistic voices.

As a bonus, all participants engaged in an open studio session where they had the opportunity to view works from all other week-long courses. The portrait drawing and large-scale metalwork workshops were particularly inspiring, showcasing the exceptional efforts of those involved.

Ms Harrison is excited to apply these new skills to the inaugural Year 11 Ceramics course starting in 2025. "This new course will provide students with a solid foundation in ceramic techniques while encouraging them to explore their own creative expression," she said.

Ms Harrison is grateful to the School for providing the opportunity to attend this exceptional course and she is eager to incorporate these newfound skills and inspiration into the classroom, enriching the learning experiences of our students.

National Art School Intensive Studio Practice 2024

Year 11 Visual Arts students across the state have the opportunity to apply for the National Art Schools HSC Intensive Studio Practice Workshops that run in the winter and spring school holidays each year, to hone their skills in a medium of their choice. The completion of the workshop also will be honored on their Higher School Certificate at the end of Year 12. The application process is rigorous, with student applications including a portfolio of works, a letter outline their desire to immersive themselves in the world of Visual Arts in the future, and outlining their own artistic practice throughout their youth and passion for Visual Arts.

Lindisfarne was lucky enough to have three students selected to take part in the program in 2024 at the countries most prestigious art school. Aila Edmonds, Lily Keane and Uma Uprichard travelled to Sydney in the holidays and undertook a week long studio practice in Ceramics and Sculpture.

The students are elated with the skills they have learnt and enjoyed meeting other Visual Arts students from around the state and those that study at NAS. Aila, Lily and Uma will return to NAS in the next holidays to for the completion of their HSC Intensive Studio Practice and exhibit their works.

Incognito Art Show

A number of Year 11 Visual Arts students and Visual Arts teachers entered up to three artworks each into the 2024 Incognito Art show, held in Sydney and online on July 13 and 14.

The Incognito Art Show is a not-for-profit organisation supporting Australian artists. The team at Incognito run Australia’s biggest and most inclusive art show.

The Incognito Art Show isn’t an ordinary art sale. Every piece of artwork (A5 in size), regardless of artist, is sold for just $100. The identity of an artwork’s artist remains anonymous at all times. Only once an artwork is bought, will the artist’s name be revealed to the buyer on the back of the artwork.

Profits raised will go towards funding programs that support artists working with disabilities.

The show’s unique model provides greater access to art-buying for those without the usual means to do so, as well as democratises art selection; buyers buy what they truly love, not a big name.

Our students work was displayed alongside world famous artists artworks of Ben Quilty, Blak Douglas, and Vincent Namitjira just to name a few. This charitable activity allowed our students to create their own unique pieces of art and give back to the Australian arts community.

The online sale is still open and there are thousands of artworks still available. If you are interested in browsing the works the link to the website is listed below.

Enjoying looking through some of the 2024 excitement of incognito, the exhibition and our student works.

Schools Tree Day

On Thursday our Junior School house captains and sustainability leaders participated in Schools Tree Day. This is a yearly national event that happens in conjunction with National Tree Day. National and Schools Tree Day has become Australia’s largest tree planting event with our five million people helping to plant over 27 million trees around Australia since the event started in 1996.

Our year 4 house captains and sustainability leaders had a great time planting and learning about the Red Carabeen, a local species of native tree. Sustainable Suki even made a appearance. This tree will help enhance the biodiversity on campus and support the 137 species of animals that call the Junior School home. It is also a great legacy for our house captains and sustainability leaders to leave behind. Thank you to Mrs Leary for helping to organise the tree planting. We look forward to seeing this tree grow over the years to come.

Waste-Free Lunches

At Lindisfarne, we are working towards becoming a more sustainable school. We want our students to be conscious of the part we can all play in making a more sustainable world and the actions that we can all take to help our planet. This is why we strongly encourage students to have waste-free lunches at Lindisfarne.

Waste-free lunches use reusable items instead of single-use plastic or other disposable items. Having a waste-free lunch is fantastic for the environment as it reduces landfill and litter and saves natural resources. Waste-free lunches are also fantastic for parents too! Packing waste-free lunches for your kids will save you money as you no longer need to continually buy disposable plastic wrap and packaging for lunches.

Having a waste-free lunch is simple and easy. Plastics and disposable items can be replaced with more sustainable items that can be washed and reused again. This is great for the environment and ends up being cheaper for you. Please use the tips below to help you create great waste-free lunches.

Use What You Have: Reusable containers are fantastic for waste-free lunches and most families already have these containers at home. Make use of what you have and it may not be necessary to buy additional supplies. This will save you money and is also better for the environment.

Food Waste: Make sure only to pack as much food as your child will eat. Leftovers from dinner can also be put directly into lunch containers to save on food costs and reduce wastage.

Saving Time: Minimise the morning rush by packing lunches the night before. Get your kids to help with the packaging and making of their lunch. Studies have shown that children are much less likely to waste their food when they are involved in making it.

The table below can also be used as a helpful guide for making waste-free lunches.

Lunchbox Disposables

Sustainable Alternatives

Sandwich in plastic cling wrap, a zip lock bag or aluminium foil

Sandwich that is packed in a reusable container or in a beeswax wrap

Chips, biscuits, cake and other snacks in plastic packaging

Chips, biscuits, cake, and other snacks in a reusable container

Yoghurt squeeze pouches

Yoghurt in a reusable container with a washable spoon

Plastic water bottles

Reusable water bottle (there are bubblers and water bottle refill stations all around Lindisfarne where bottles can be refilled with cold water)

Fruit and vegetables in plastic

Pack whole fruits and vegetables as they do not require any packaging or slice fruits and vegetables into reusable containers

Cheese strips or sticks in plastic

Cut cubes or sticks of cheese into a reusable container
